Rams agree to trade for Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...e-kansas-city-chiefs-cornerback-marcus-peters

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams agreed to acquire All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, a move that was first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Details of the trade, which won't be processed until the start of the new league year on March 14, have yet to be disclosed. But the Chiefs are expected to receive a package of draft picks, not players, in return, according to Schefter's sources.

Peters steps in as the Rams' primary cornerback, which might spell the end of Trumaine Johnson's tenure with the team. Peters, a two-time Pro Bowler who was named first-team All-Pro in 2016, has compiled an NFL-leading 19 interceptions since being drafted 18th overall three years ago.

The 25-year-old will cost $1.74 million toward the salary cap this season, which is nearly one-tenth of Johnson's cap hit last year. The Rams would then have until May 3 to pick up Peters' fifth-year option for 2019.

The Rams entered the offseason with a desperate need at cornerback. Johnson, who spent the past two years playing under the franchise tag, and slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents. Their No. 2 cornerback, Kayvon Webster, ruptured an Achilles tendon in December. Beyond them, there isn't much depth.

The Peters acquisition gives the Rams salary-cap flexibility, which they could use on pending free agents such as safety Lamarcus Joyner and wide receiver Sammy Watkins. It also helps them sign defensive tackle Aaron Donald to an extension that is expected to eventually make him the game's highest-paid defensive player.

Just as important, it provides a shutdown corner for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

Peters is the first player since Ed Reed (from 2002 to 2004) with five interceptions in each of his first three seasons, even though opposing quarterbacks have continually shied away from him. From 2015 to 2017, Peters' combination of sacks, forced fumbles and interceptions (25) easily led the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

But Peters also joins the Rams with some character concerns. He was thrown off his collegiate team at Washington for an altercation with an assistant coach. In December, he was suspended by the Chiefs for one game after tossing an official's penalty flag into the crowd and then retreating to the locker room without being ejected during a game against the New York Jets.

Peters was also seen at different times on the sideline last season shouting at defensive coordinator Bob Sutton or others. In at least one instance, he directed expletives at a group of fans behind the Chiefs' bench. The Rams are hopeful that a change of scenery can help fix that.

ESPN's Adam Teicher contributed to this report.

This trade is weird. No one is releasing the terms, even though both teams acknowledge the trade. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other players on the Rams being included. They wouldn't release names unless they had an agreement and filed the paperwork.

Rams are all of a sudden making a big push now that their offense looks to be legit with cheap rookie-contract players (Goff/Gurley).

We'll get to see how good Carroll and Seattle really are now that they are paying their franchise QB what he is worth. Could be the same type of pretenders/under achievers Baltimore has been of late.

For all his talent, Peters isn't a model citizen or team player. Guessing the Chiefs may have grown tired of that.

Something for Mr. Bell to consider.

Bell if far from a "Peter's" in that respect but Bells problem is his self value. From what other players say, Bell isn't a locker room distraction. On the flip side he isn't in TC due to hol;d out. In any event if the tag happens and we end up with two early first rounds, I'd take that in a heartbeat.

This is now the second team that has kicked him out as he was kicked off U of Washington. Andy Reid is Mr Second Chances, so when he wants you gone, it's an issue.

The Rams are definitely trying to go for it before they have to pay people. They were smart not to cave to Donald last year because he still had years left on his deal but they have to pay him now. He will only get more expensive.

You only get in trouble with contracts when you give big money to players who aren't worth it. Donald is such a dominant player that even if he becomes the highest paid player in the league, he's worth it. He makes others better.

Steelers never struggled after giving Ben money. Why? He makes others better. The Ravens have have struggled since giving Flacco money because he's not great. He doesn't make anybody better around him so it means you have to surround him with other great players.

Where does Bell fall in at?????? AND is his price going to merit the ability he falls in at at the position he plays.......... ???

Bell is a special player. His receiving ability is what makes him worth big money. I also think you have to factor shazier into this. I would have paid shazier ahead of bell and I think the steelers would have as well. They likely had a big contract already budgeted to Shazier before his injury. Now that money is available for Bell.

it changed my opinion on keeping Bell. I think the steelers played it right last year by offering him big money but not all he was asking. They may be able to offer him a bit more this year but i doubt they will offer the huge money bell wants.

Part of the problem with Bell is that he has said he wants to raise the bar for other RBs. That’s a big part of why he is holding out for so much. RBs probably have the hardest time getting paid outside of special teamers. The league now mostly waits to draft them and most teams use a committe of backs instead of that 1 stud RB. Plus they are pretty much left for dead once they hit 30.

Bell knows this is his only shot at big money. He was a second rounder so he’s underpaid to this point. He’s in his prime right now. By next contract he’ll be considered washed up and no matter how well he performs, if he age is 29+ no team will give him bug money.

I think the steelers need to either give him big money or give him a long contract with guaranteed years.

Another good thing about Bell is he’s not that fast. His success is his patience in finding holes and his receiving ability. Those are things he can still do as an older back down the road. So i do think Bell can still be productive later in his career like Bettis was. Bettis couldn’t be a workhorse late in his career, but was still a quality player as a specialist. Bell can be a quality 3rd down back for years after he’s no longer an every down player.
