By: Michael Stiffler, @Stiffeezy_ on Twitter SteelerNation.com   I will be honest, the moment the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Chase Claypool, I wasn’t in love with the pick. We already had players like JuJu Smith Schuster, James Washington, and Diontae Johnson, and the draft had a plethora of talent at the receiver position. I knew his […]

I like the speed and physical aspect of his game. I am hoping to see some good things from this talented prospect.

You have to like Claypool's body control, especially on those back shoulder throws from Ben. It's one of the best passes in the league right now. He also seems like a very strong hand catcher. Nice hearing positive things about Claypool from reports and his teammates.

Been some beautiful battles in time past. Time to sharpen that sword !

His hands and body control were two of the main things that stuck out to me in watching his highlights. Not to mention his long strides and deceptive speed. He put a couple nice little jukes against CBs as well, shows he's a student of the position.

Short of injury it will be very interesting where all the wr. Will play. Washington had a good season and I feel DJ is a guy who can't leave the field and obviously the same with Juju.

Pittsburgh moves players around. A lot of different formations have receivers knowing all 3 positions. But I believe we will see Johnson & Washington starting outside with juju in the slot where he’s best from. From my understanding claypool is another that can play anywhere, but I’m sure he’ll be the primary outside backup with Switz being the #2 slot. Of course that’s if my 6 WR predictions stands true with switz and cain taking 5-6
That’s the fun in it, add in McDonald and Ebron and it gets even more creative.
4 receiver sets With
Claypool - Johnson - Juju - Washington
Now that gets me anxious. 5 wide throw in Ebron. Mix in some McDonald...
ok enough dreaming...

Stiffler does it again, nice article.

Claypool is doing what was intended when drafted and I am very impressed with his full dollar bill. Let's get that to translate to field of play and he will be a great asset.

Salute the nation

I liked the pick. He has first round ability. IMO, he can run TE routes too.

As a WR he can block a ton, and had deep speed, probably best used on play action as he's a bit of a long strider. Should be a top jump ball / sideline player as well with ability to wall out the defender by using his size.

I don't know what the Steelers were offered for Ju ju via trade before the draft, but 2nd round pick or greater and I would have taken it.

That is what you aren't a GM you are an idiot. You would have half the team traded.

If Cooch was GM, we would have 16 1st round picks, all from Cleveland. It would be glorious!

And no pro bowl starters.

Did you see our cap situation and amount of free agents we have next year. Take a look. Ju-ju is decent, but its clear he needed Brown with him on the field to shine. Johnson, not Ju-Ju was our best receiver last year. I saw Ju-Ju dropped passes, fumble that cost us in games, etc..

He's going to cost a ton to re-sign in free agency. We drafted Claypool for a reason. No, I would not have traded half the team, but when i see a guy with 1 year left that we likely can not re-sign, yeah I'll take a high draft pick for him.

And now that I have you attention, I would have traded Conner if offered a 3rd round pick too. Love the guy but he's broken down and fumbles too much. Not the same player he was 2 years ago, and he's a free agent to next year.

You live in your fears. It isn't what said player costs next year. It is what said player can do for us this year. You have my attention alright. For all the wrong reasons like your plethora of rants about what you would do as if anyone gives a ****. Try to zoom in here and soak it in. No look closer, focus. The team will keep who they want let go who they want, replace that player, extend this and that player and as long as there is Big Ben they will contend. You are worried about a cap that hasn't even been set yet. Trading away starters ...you do that when you rebuild not when you are contending as in the hunt. I know you think you can eval but no you really can't you spit things out of your *** like it is fact but normally it is just window licking opinions based on your fears. We don't live in our fears son we are here to win championships.

I can’t see this. I understand the idea behind it, but it doesn’t happen in the NFL near as much as you would expect. Especially trading proven talent to an extent and trusted offensive weapons. Ben has how many years left? What good would we do giving him less weapons, or a more inexperienced offense and more question marks surrounding him? This team is in win now mode, and has a hope they can resign either juju or Conner I would assume. May not happen, but I’ve learned never to doubt the team. That text read “I would love it, but they will NEVER trade for Minkah.” Followed by “holy ****”

They will find a way around the cap somehow, for the moves that will best benefit the team NOW and not 3-4 years from now.

It's going to be hard to keep Claypool off the field. I hope Tomlin actually gives him a chance and doesn't sit him because he is a rookie.

JuJu played injured all last year. If you think anyone will be more productive than a healthy JuJu with Ben this year, you're fooling yourself.

The only thing that the Steelers would have accomplished by trading JuJu this year is losing their #1 receiver, who is now opening holes for Wash, DJ, and now Clay. Also it would have been much tougher to go for a Lombardi this year without our most seasoned receiver.

Because they are basically all in on the season I'm ok with keeping Juju. however, if they would have gotten SF one (which was bantered around and there was smoke on that trade I'd have been ok.) They could have gotten a Juju replacement and a D Tackle or Edge player.

Oh My God! A player looking great in camp?

**** that's NEVER happened before. I think we can ALL bank on the fact that he's gonna DOMINATE in the regular season. Cause camp stories are always 100% accurate.

(As you can see, I have spent too many years getting excited about the camp hype, only to see the team bumble, stumble, crumble their way in to the regular season. I'm sure he's a perfectly average receiver. Perhaps eventually he'll be exceptional, I really do hope so, but I know just about for Got Damn Certain, that the Steelers will look like garbage once the season opens for real.

I'm not going to go quite as far with it as you did, but I agree with the general message.
I'm not getting hyped for **** these days. I've seen way too many camp stories that just weren't reality once the season started.
Now what's this I hear about Bens throwing motion being "different"? And not in a good way? That's the **** that worries me.

Didn't read it as not in a good way, all the reports I read came off as positive...

That would be crazy to trade Ju Ju. We know what JU JU is capable of but we do not know yet about Chase. Training camp highlights are great but we have to see how that translates into actual games.

I hope Ju Ju stays and has a good year and we re-sign him. He's a young talent that has his better years in front of him and would be a shame to let him walk away.

I can't remember what group I saw the post on. It was a Facebook post, said he was short arming his throws, and that that is never good. But I'm paraphrasing.
Of the videos I've seen though, I haven't noticed anything off.

Even if Ben rebounds I could see early struggles to knock the rust off. Right in line with a Tomlin team out of the gates anyways.

First off, you are off-base out of the gate. Washington was the leading receiver last year.
Secondly, given the fact that Ben was out and the Steelers had a couple of very inexperienced QBs slingin' the ball - it's impossible to say WHERE JuJu is at without Brown right now.
Johnson flashed some moments and I sincerely hope he continues to shine and improve. But JuJu (as was mentioned) was hurt last season and thus we simply don't know what to expect from him aside from his uncanny ability to break ridiculously long plays due to his sneaky speed and great angles.

Let's just hope that they ALL play amazingly well, shall we?
