Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt flopped sides, reportedly for good. Dupree is now the blind-side rusher on the right side. ...

I just read this little nugget and immediately thought, did Jim look too much into a typical Steeler approach that involves players being versatile...so they move them around? Or did he find out they in fact moved them and the position change is permanent?

I know SN had a thread that wondered if the change would make more sense based on the players strengths /weaknesses.

Not sure if this one should be purchased.

What say you Steelernation ?

SELL................NOTHING is permanent in ther NFL. I think they may try this position switch but also realize CMVLT values position flexibility to much to make this a permanent thing. Most here like to use "base" package to determine starting position but also realize the players change positions frequently through out the game. I could believe base package may have them switched but NOT on a permanent basis.

Bud Dupree said he was taking reps at RIGHT OLB during minicamp. But he implied not to look too much into it. "We gotta play both sides, and this is a good time of year to do it."

(corrected tweet, I'm dyslexic)

You might be right DIC, will be interesting watch though.........

In general, when I hear "position flexibility", I think "jack of all trades, master of none".

I'm buying.

This makes sense.* Most teams tend to run to the right more than the left.* And the Right Tackle usually is a better run blocker than the Left Tackle.

Anyone who has seen Dupree play knows he's rather weak defending the run, however, Watt is not.** Watt is very strong and active vs the run, and better at getting off blocks.

So by switching them, your base run defense improves a bit.

Watt should have an easier time beating right tackles for sacks.

Dupree, well-- he's got his work cut out for him beating left tackles for sacks.

Dupree is a frustrating guy to watch as he flashes more ability than his production shows.* His football IQ is lacking, and it seems like his effort is also lacking at times.

I think our beloved "JOEY" as a player was way better than "Joey" as a coach. I think Dupree may have some issues but one of them includes coaching.

NOTES -- Le'Veon Bell, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Cameron Heyward were absent from this voluntary OTA. Heyward arrived late and said he was receiving minor treatment. ... Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt flopped sides, reportedly for good. Dupree is now the blind-side rusher on the right side. ... Other number changes in the secondary: Joe Haden 23 and Mike Hilton 28. ...

I found this refreshing.. and really really speaking to someone in particular..

""I think what everybody needs to understand is that Ryan Shazier is an amazing player," Williams started. "If we would've picked a linebacker this year -- there wasn't a linebacker who had the skillset of a Ryan Shazier in the draft, I mean, unless you're absolutely idiotic. Ryan Shazier is a treMENDous talent. You don't have linebackers that run 4.3s and jump 40-some verticals and can cover athletic tight ends like that every draft. So just to pick a linebacker to say you're picking a linebacker is not really going to accomplish much."

Its quite obvious that if they didnt get one of the top four ILBs in the draft they had an alternate plan for replacing Shazier.. because only a combination of guys could give you what he was doing for us..

Joey Porter was an excellent blitz and cover linebacker. Dupree would be lucky to have half of his career. I'm not saying Durpee is a bust, just that he is capable of playing better.

Is coaching the issue with Dupree?

I think part of the problem with Durpee is he isn't very bright. Didn't the guy pull a 13 on his Wonderlic? Jimmy Johnson once said hit me really hard if I ever draft a dumb guy, I can't reason with or coach them.

You do know they can be football smart and still not be very book -wonderlick smart?

So now you're saying the coach is not the problem if a player doesn't succeed? That's very different than your stance on Tomlin...

It might be quite obvious.. but not for some...

I'm sorry. I posted the same damn thing in two different threads.. I must be losing my ******* mind. I thought I posted what I did. And then I didn't see it,,, I thought wtf.. maybe I navigated away before I hit post reply. So feeling like a dumbass.. sorry.

I posted this after the Jax loss, there was rumors this may happen, Dupree gets his *** handed to him in the running game

I dont get some NFL positionong. All the football Ive coached has Will and Sam linebackers with Sam playing strong wide with more athleticism. Will is less athletic but agressive and powerful. Likewise my cover corner plays Sam side in greater space. Boundary corner is protected a little more. NFL throws that all out and goes right left. Dont get it.

Hopefully, Bud doesn't keep running a 15 yard loop around the LT on the right side. He takes himself out of the play 80% of the time.

At the beginning of last year, I had high hopes for Bud, but now that hope is flailing.

I see Keon Adams and TJ Watt as our starting OLBs this season and I think they are going to be ***-kicking good.

Dupree, in the immortal words of a great steeler coach, needs to “just rush the quarterback !!!!!” He shouldn’t be dropping back getting artsy fartsy. Watt is more versatile he can cover backs tes bigger slots receivers where Dupree just gets lost. He needs to concentrate in qb smashing nothing fukn else. This is where butler really sucks he’s not putting his players in a position where they can make a play... he’s too concerned with his “ I’m a mad genius” schemes but what hes really is doing is getting his players out of position to make a play... butler needs to get his head out of the safe dark place he keeps it and start coaching real WPA football, Some good old smash mouth defense!
