Steelers Antonio Brown Wants A New Contract Before Season Starts

The Pittsburgh Steelers will report for training camp on Thursday and wide receiver Antonio Brown will be there. Brown, however, wants his contract addressed before the start of the regular season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This is not surprising one bit but if Brown wants more money this year, he’ll more than likely have to settle for getting an advancement on his 2017 base salary like he received last year as general manager Kevin Colbert isn’t likely to give him a new deal until next year at this same time.

“Players sign contracts, we expect them to honor those until there’s a year left,” said Colbert nearly one full year ago. “The only time we’ve gone away from that is with the quarterbacks and we’ve been consistent about going to them with two years left, except for Ben this year. You know Ben didn’t do his until he had one year left.”

Brown is scheduled to make $6.25 million in base salary this season. He had 136 catches and 1,834 yards in 2016, which both set Steelers franchise records.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green is currently the leagues highest paid wide receiver as he averages $15 million a season.

Of course he does. He has earned a new contract, but that's not how the Steelers do business. Hopefully he doesn't hold out or pout and he can get paid next season.

I would say this, in light of Bell's situation it could be very prudent just to get Brown's contract done now. Everyone knows you are going to extend this guy anyhow. I think if you play him down to the final year of his contract he holds the last leverage (at least of it getting real ugly and having to use the tag and him holding out). He can't exceed this years number substantially, that would be the first language that would come up. But we all know he is after guaranteed money. You should never say we will never do anything. Brown wants to lower his risk. So use that as a negotiating tool to get him in as cap friendly as possible.

They'll give him a $2-3 million bonus like they did last year.

I say pay him. Has not caused any problems, played way above his contact, and is probably the second most valuable guy on the team. Behind him at WR we do not have a whole lot other than Bryant who may or may not smoke himself out of the NFL.

they have to make him understand how the Steelers do business and with a promise that he will be taken care of next season. Hopefully the advance payment keeps him happy

Under normal circumstances I would be on the side of the Steelers and say "business as usual." Brown is a different situation. He's vastly outperformed his contract and is a model player and it's time for the Steelers to sign him to the contract he has earned. However, I get the DeCastro deal done first.

To be clear, Brown has never publicly expressed displeasure with his six-year, $43-million contract. He has gone out of his way to be a good company guy and sources told ESPN that Brown will report to training camp on Thursday. But Brown is underpaid, and everyone knows it, including Brown. He's set to make $6.25 million on the fifth year of his deal, which ranks 26th among wide receivers. The Steelers have a long-standing policy not to re-negotiate contracts until a player is one year from free agency. But if they don't make an exception for Brown, they better be ready to back up the truck in 2017. -- Jeremy Fowler

In the past, I would always say: "If they cave to //insert players name here// then that will open the door to others asking for their contract to be redone".

But in the case of a Ben Roethlisberger or an Antonio Brown, I say do it. Restructure now and lock their *** up. Players of this caliber don't come along very often, so when they do, you do what you can to keep them. I think other players who may try to follow would realize, "I'm no Big Ben. I'm no AB". If they don't, **** them.

I would NOT do this for a Le'Veon Bell, Martavis Bryant, Maurkice Pouncey, Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt, Marcus Wheaton, Deangelo Williams, etc.

My two cents.

Not saying he will take a "hometown" discount, per se, but if the Steelers go against their rules and offer him a contract now, he may be more open to what they are offering. He needs to realize also that he is under contract for 2 years and then they could easily franchise him for 2. By then, he will be at the end of his big money making potential due to his age. I'd offer him something fair now and see what happens.

His first house payment must be due.

I used to be on the side of the team in these situations, but not anymore. Why does a player have yo honor his contract when that same player, if he loses a step year 3 into a 5 year deal can be cut by the team? It's bullshit.

I remember in the 90s someone interviewed Dan Rooney and he made a statement the Steelers wouldn't do things like that, cut players for salary cap purposes and so on. Well, with the present nature of the NFL, you almost have to. So all teams do it. But it is hypocritical to demand that players honor their deals, then.

This is why I think the salary cap sucks. Let teams pay whatever they want. We have had years of data to show us that signing an all-star teams doesn't really work out. I'd get rid of it, or at the very least do a little something like the NBA does in that if you sign back your own guys, you can sign them to bigger deals and it won't effect the cap as much.

you'd be surprised to know that Doug Baldwin (seahawks) collects 11,5M/Y and his contract is valid up to 2021. Though only 12M guaranteed

I don't know how could anyone expect him to receive less that 14M /Y on his new contract. Maybe you can lower a bit this figure when you include his existing contract money, if it's actually extended this very season. With more guaranteed money you could also try to lower the total number.

I suppose the simple thing for me to say like many have is just pay the man, 15 mil per year or whatever he wants, although that's not going to get me into the cap management hall of fame.

This might be a good time to extend him long term with a signing bonus to boost this year and possibly do a similar bonus next year. I imagine Antonio has 4 really outstanding years left which will likely be followed by 4 good years because of his study of the game and great hands.

Give him a 10 yr contract, I would be willing to bet he could play it out.

It's a tough call.

Brown is one of the greatest receivers in the game without a question, but on the other hand, when Ben isn't throwing, Brown's production drops markedly.
Still, with those two together you have hands down the best pair Pittsburgh has seen in what? 10, 15 years? Easy?

Say you hold off to next year to sign him to a fair deal. We know he's outperformed his contract. What if he gets a terrible injury. Sure, the Steelers walk away without having lost a ton of money in a guy who was amazing before he got hurt, but that isn't the Steeler way either. I like to think Pittsburgh while doing business properly and with a smart mindset will still take care of their own. Brown just wants security knowing that as the top threat on the team he's also the top target for safeties and cornerbacks and now rabid dog Burfict. That guy is literally out to end somebody's career every time he steps on the field. He can pretend he's not but his actions speak completely otherwise. He's simply trying to end other guy's careers. He'll roll with guys ankles in his grip, he'll purposefully head-hunt, I mean this guy is out to cause a devastating knee injury or even a spinal injury. He's that out of control.

So, a guy like Brown wants some insurance cause he's got to line up and cross over the middle at least a couple times a season (well not this year) but generally against Burfict and other guys like him. It's a dangerous sport. Brown was what a 5th or 6th round pick who worked his way up to be one of the top 2 or 3 receivers in the game, arguably the best? And he's being paid almost 1/3 what the top guy is being paid?

I can see where he's coming from. We have money tied up in guys who don't even see the field due to their own poor choices. Where does THAT make sense?

**** Colbert. That is the stuff of hypocrisy. The Steelers don't always honor contracts so shut their fat heads saying players should.

If a PLAYER under-performs on his contract, they will cut them and MAYBE agree to pay them less.

Is THAT "honoring" a contract? Tell me how that isn't dealing in double standards. If a player outperforms their deal (especially on the level that AB is) they should indeed offer a new deal before the old one is up.

Not doing so is being a hypocrite.

There is ZERO that can be debated on that.

Stop being hypocrites, front office. STOP IT.

Pretty hard to play fearlessly when a bad knee injury could have you leaving all that money on the table. Again, I get him to find a medium of exchanging security of this year and next for exorbitant "I'm the highest paid receiver in the league" bullshit. You want security. Here is security. But there has to be a trade off. That is negotiating.

Steelers have their method of doing things.

Not sure I find fault in their stance.

And Brown not skipping camp and wanting new contract is fair as well.

Perhaps push some more money up front, if you don't want to do anything else this year.

They use double standards. I do have a problem with that. Double standards are BS.

Their methods seem to work to this point, I don't see it as a double standard.

Their methods seem to work to this point, I don't see it as a double standard.

In case you didn't read my earlier post, here is why I believe it is.

1. Player signs deal, underperforms.

2. Even though they both "signed on the dotted line" team cuts player and may ask for a pay cut.

3. Player outperforms his deal, team won't budge claiming a "deal is a deal" and won't negotiate a new deal.

So, the team can "break the deal" but cries foul if the player wants to.

They might be fooling some fans, but I don't buy it. They are using double standards.

That is just business. They have a cap to manage. If someone becomes dead weight they have to cut him.

Just the same fading Steelers have earned more than their worth at times.

So the fact that a player can be overpaid and not all are asked to take a cut, evens the playing field.

Again I don't buy the double standards tag. We will have to agree to disagree.
