Breakout season?

Ulysses Gilbert III

It was already discussed in another recent thread, but I think he's the real deal, he's going to be a big-play maker for this defense that other teams' offenses aren't fully aware of, at least not yet. Early on, the coaching staff will have him out there sparingly and in situational roles, but i think by the last 3/4 of the season, he'll be pushing to take Vincenzo's job away from him, for good.

Who do you feel will have a breakout campaign in 2020 and why?

I'll be happy is Ju-Ju and Ben play like they did 2 years ago, and Dupree comes close to his 2019 performance.

Breakout player? Maybe Johnson. He's very quick in and out of cuts, and with a better QB could shine.

I think 2 rookies have a chance to break out, but injury would have to be the main reason for more action.

1) Claypool - Special Teams will cement him as an active player each game, and he being active will push him into 4/5 WR or red zone opportunities. He's the best 4th/5th option since Nate Washington. Like Nate, he will work his way up to more playing time.

2) McFarland - If he gets on the field for a drive and breaks one, he'll be in the offensive plans every week. Really needs someone above him to get hurt to be used often though, unless he starts returning kicks and shows he should have a hat on Sundays.

Dark Horse - A lot of people are predicting Switzer to be the slot receiver this year, but I think he has big competition with Quadree Henderson. QH is more quick twitch, like Eli, and is a superior returner, both punt and kick returns. Steelers reclaimed him when he was available late last season. He looked good in training camp 2 years ago. We'll see, but I like his potential.

Agree with guys here, DJ, UG3, I think this is the final chance for Terrel Edmunds to break out, hardly will he ever find a better crew around him to elevate his talent

I'm just gonna pull one out of the air and say James Washington. JW had a great preseason last year and looked like the proverbial "man among boys". He also had a great YPC average in the regular season while playing with backup QBs. Many are predicting he will be the WR knocked out of the rotation by Claypool. I'm saying he rises to the challenge and "shocks the world of Steeler Nation". Hey, it could happen.

I am going with Okorafor if he is going to at all this will be the year to do it.

nice one, if he could turn out to be our franchise LT for the upcoming years that would be an incredible help to the team, one spot to forget about in next year's draft and a lot of cap space that will be saved compared to going with a free agent in the market.

I like Henderson beating out Swisscheese period. I do like Juju, and Washington splitting time in the slot. With Ebron at tight end- that will be the missmatch I want to create.

Of course I didn’t give my breakout prediction. I think on offense- I’m not sure- either Johnson or Washington. The offensive dark horse is Snell. Defense I like Edmunds and Sutton.

This. And whoever's used properly is going to break out.

bush is going to rise up to level up Luke Keachly prior to retirment

Interim Head Coach John Mitchell.

After struggling to an early 0-fer start, including close games bungled by poor time management/use of challenges, Rooney finally brings the axe down. Steelers respond by winning out and climbing the stairway to seven!

You don't know how much I'd love Edmunds to make plays this year though. That D would be unstoppable if he turns into a monebacker monster!
It is possible. He seems better closer in. Now someone would have to take his spot. I am sure they will be looking closely at Brooks in one of the spots...

ALL of the ABOVE but also add in

TEAM

I think with the offense contributing more this year than last will put them on the same tug n pull page as the defense instead of lop-sided defense doing all the work. It will show team unity to a higher degree thus allowing even ,more accomplishment.

Salute the nation

Kevin Dotson could start at G before the end of the year.

Dionte Johnson will take over as WR1 with Ben at QB. He really did have a great season for a rookie with backup QBs throwing to him.

Very nice list. Here’s mine as I didn’t want to influence anyone.

James Conner- contract year, is putting in tons off offseason work, getting Ben back, really no competition behind him. I think he gets 275 carries, 1,300 yards, 45 catches for 360 yards, and 12 total touchdowns.

JuJu- Ben is back, contract year, Johnson, Washington, Ebron do enough to allow him to get back to 2018 form. 100 catches for 1,300 yards and 10 scores.

Ulysses Gilbert III I feel has a great shot at being what we hoped Mark Barron would be. 90 tackles, 75 solo, 7 pd, 2 ints, 1 FF, 2 sacks, 7 TFL.

Cam Sutton- contract year, Haden is aging, I somehow see Sutton getting on the field more and earning a second contract with the Steelers and perhaps pushing Haden off the team. Or replacing Hilton in 2021 at nickel then Haden in 2022 at LCB. 6 starts, 2 int, 10 PD.

I read an article that indicated that Justin Layne would show vast improvement this season.

I can't remember where I saw it but I'll take anything that might make us better.

Dionte Johnson reminds me a lot of a young AB (on the field). If Ben stays healthy, Johnson going to remind many others. Can't wait to see what this guy can do with a good quarterback.
