Reporter to Bum Phillips: "We understand that Earl Campbell refused to take part in a mile run in practice today". Bum to reporter: "If it's ever 4th and a mile I won't give him the ball!"

I loved his whole style and that was as good an answer as there ever was given to any question……… !!!!

Salute the nation

Loved that guy, too bad for him the road to the Super Bowl went through Pittsburgh.

Phillips was asked what he wanted as his epitaph and replied, "He would have lived a lot longer if he hadn’t had to play Pittsburgh six times in two years."

Liked and respected Bum a lot. The owner Bud Adams not so much. He was an asshat!

didn't Bum get into a fist fight with another coach on the sidelines or am I thinking of someone else. I could of sworn it was a Houston Oiler coach

No, you're thinking of Buddy Ryan taking a swing at offensive coach Kevin Gilbride as the Oilers were in the process of giving up a 35-3 lead to the Bills.

Edit: Nope, Ryan did indeed take a swing at Gilbride when they were both coaches for the Oilers but that took place during the last regular season game where the Oilers beat the Jets 24-0.

The dispute occurred shortly before halftime with the Oilers up 14-0. Gilbride called two pass plays with 37 seconds left, trying to get more points on the board, where the first was incomplete and the second was a fumble recovered by the Jets. Nowadays, nobody says "boo" about an offense trying to put more points on the board up 14-0 with 37 seconds left in the half.

Jack Pardee was the Oilers HC at the time. Buddy Ryan the DC took a shot at OC Kevin Gilbride on the sidelines,

Thanks steeltime. I know someone took a swing on the Oilers sideline

“Yeah, but he goes down real slow too”
Bum when asked if he was annoyed by Campbell taking his sweet *** time getting up after a tackle…

still remember his big at the rally they had in the astrodome when the oilers returned home from the 2nd AFC Championship loss to the Steelers

One year ago, we knocked on the door. This year, we beat on the door. Next year, we're gonna kick the son-of-a-***** in."

didn't quite happen

And I remember a T shirt that came out depicting a very tall Jack Lambert, arms folded standing in front of a door.
In front of him was a midget sized Bum Phillips pointing to Lambert and ordering a midget sized Oiler to go kick in that door.
