The great Steeler scout that plucked fantastic players from the under-scouted black colleges and universities is a Finalist for the 2021 Hall of Fame inductions.

No link...just saw it on NFLN.

Oddly enough, I never knew his son was Radio Raheem in Do The Right Thing...one of my fave movies. Awesome.

The 1974 draft, the story goes the Steelers moved the John Stallworth tapes to the back of the room, making it harder for the other scouts to see it.

GREATEST draft ever and glad he is nominated finalist. NOW voters...... Do the right thing and induct him.

I heard that the Steelers had the ONLY reel on Stallworth...and the told all the teams they "misplaced" it, lol.

Did not really know that until looked it up. Turns out that Bill Nunn was given the only game film from Alabama A&M for Stallworth, and he suspected that Stallworth's 40 time did not match up with his game speed and had him re-run the 40 - the only scout present when that happened.

When recounting the story, Nunn told me that he had no idea, no way of ensuring that Stallworth would still be on the board when the Steelers' turn in the fourth round came up, but he also understood that Noll wanted reassurance, even if it wasn't based on fact. So Nunn, who was the only scout to have re-timed Stallworth in the 40-yard dash after his previous bad time on a wet field, the scout who was given Alabama A&M's only copy of Stallworth's game film from his senior season, the scout the Steelers trusted implicitly with all things having to do with HBCUs, told Noll what he wanted to hear.

Noll wanted to use the 2nd round pick on Stallworth. Steelers had traded their 3rd round pick for a nobody defensive lineman, Tom Keating, so if they passed on Stallworth in the 2nd, they would have to wait until the 4th.

Nunn convinced Noll to use the 2nd on somebody else, which turned out to be a skinny LB'er from Kent State. Forget his name. Jack something.

Great post Steeltime, thanks for all the "insider" type information so now I can WoW my friends and enemies (just kidding as I don't have any enemies).

Dan Rooney was vested in the scouting and drafting as well. I wonder how much of an eye he had in conjunction of working together with Nunn. I'm glad we had those resources and the Cheif allowed the room to Rome.

This is true.

Bill Nunn waited a day; feigning illness, because the weather conditions left very wet track....

Steelers were part of a group called BLESTO—an acronym for the teams that scouted together in old days.

Through Nunn’s relationships — he had information on players no one else did. And it wasn’t just 74... Greenwood, Blount, Gilliam just a few..
