By Jessica Costello SteelerNation.com Free agency opens at 4 p.m. on March 18, 2020 and the Pittsburgh Steelers have some pretty big decisions to make. To think that these decisions haven’t been thought of or discussed would be a tad simple-minded. With just over a month, Bud Dupree has been provoking a lot of buzz […]

The only way I sign Bud long term is if I can project a great reduction in the teams salary cap numbers down the road. And frankly I do not see that.

Good write up Jesica and you nailed the question on everyone's mind. If BUD performance was more than a one year dose, then I'd be way more in on the big payday. With mearly only one break out season, I'm a little more sceptical. TRUE he had been elevating his game to a degree, but nothing like last year. Another thing to factor is, is he a product of ALL WORLD TJ WATT? with WATTs beastly play is BUD capitalizing off it. I'm glad I don't make the final decision but yes, you sign BUD as cheaply as you can with back loaded but not cap ramification, in case he flounders.

id just tag him and see if he was a one year wonder

What tag would you use????

I'd hope the non-exclusive tag.............................................

Maybe move on from Bud and spend more to bring in Clowney. Can you imagine him opposite TJ?

At this point I'd rather pay BUD than an oft hurt / take off plays / lackadaisical / over-priced Clowney. Call me crazy but we are extremely cap HURTING so I don't want a contract stricken event.

The big difference not listed in those stats are QB Hits (pressure on the QB) Clowney has 80 in his career, Dupree only has 50. I don't want to sign either long term. TJ Watt this season alone had 36, only 14 less than Dupree has in his entire career. Elite pass rushers cause QB's to make bad throws or quick throws as well as sack the QB. Dupree had nice sack numbers but his QB hits are pretty low.

Coryea, I was more worried about paying Clowney to much money as opposed to the minimal step up of production VS the pay to keep Dupree.

Do you gain 3mil in production as BOTH players have risk(s) involved.

Yeah, I hear you, I don't want to give either guy big money. I was just pointing out that stat that isn't listed, while Clowney is viewed as often injured, he has 30 more QB hits than Dupree. Again, I'm not giving either guy big money, I'd tag Dupree, but that's it.
People call Clowney injured, lazy, etc. He only started 11 games, had 4 less QB hits, 4 less TFL, the same number of forced fumbles and PD's as Dupree did in 5 less starts. His sack #s were way low this year though.
I'm not buying into the "pay Bud big money" theme.

the thing about Dupree is what do you do if you " don't " sign him. youre back to drafting another olb-de and that in and of itself is a crap shoot. you waste another first rd pick, you wait another 4 years for said draft pick to learn an overly complicated system, and wait again to be in a position that you will have to over pay him. we went down this road with worilds and Woodley. not much to show for. many of the coaching innovations in coaching and winning in the NFL have come from coaches and front offices trying to figure how to win and manage the cap. look at chiefs. steelers have one the highest payrolls of any team that didn't make playoffs so obviously we are not too good at figuring this ***** out. well sign Dupree cause we are in no position not to, most probably tag him causing bad blood again. you have to trade these guys before they become free agents or sign them. all the strife on this team has been because they haven't figured that out. mostly we need a defensive scheme that doesn't require 11 number one draft picks to be average and we are going to need an offensive scheme that can at least be 8-8 without an 100 million dollar qb. Dupree is the least of our worries. he worked hard did all that was asked of him learned a ridiculously hard defense played well both as linebacker and de so fuking pay him I say... we don't have much choice.

Put the correct tag on him probably should be the worse case scenario. But hopefully they can agree on a contract which would make the FOs free agency approach a little easier with freeing up more money.
