I dont want to say the 70s because Hampton, Smith and Keisel were pretty damn good. But when you look at Gravedigger, Tuitt, Heyward and then reserves like Alaualu, Walton (who is getting high praise). They will be able to stay fresh and bring it all day. Maybe be able to put together an impressive four front with at most one linebacker. Really hope they get Tuitt long term. I think he could be a special player.

I still give the edge to Hampton, Keisel and Smith at this point, but the new three might make a case before too long.

I would say definitely for tying up blockers. Hampton was a special animal. You had to put two on him or the pocket is coming down on your ***. But Im thinking playmaking, pass rushing. The way Tuitt and Heyward can retrace and track the ball carrier. I dont know.

I have to agree with you Supersteeler, the new can grow but the old guys have set the bar. HAMPTON was a beast and set the point. In his prime he was unmoveable and the best of the best for his era of football. Nothing against our current and nothing would be more pleasing to eventually say that about them.....SOON !!!!!

Like the potential of this current group, and Hampton, Kiesel, and Smith were special. Gotta give a little love to the 90s boys: Seals, Steed, and Buckner. Loved Buckner coming out for super bowl 30 and tv mikes picked him up screaming "Lets get this ************ started"! as he waved his terrible towel.

Just go look up the run defense stats from the D-line last decade. That D-line was the best since the Steel Curtain. Pretty hard to compare them as Hampton controlled the middle of the line so well. Aaron Smith before his injury was outstanding against the run.

Aaron Smith is one of the most criminally underrated players of that era. Hampton was a force in the middle and Keisel was consistent as hell. Hardly anyone else was playing a 3-4 defense at that time and all the 4-3 D Lineman around the league were racking up tons of sack numbers because of the defense they played. Our guys didn't get to do flash, our LB's did. But they were great all around players. Give me Casey, Aaron and Keis any day over the one dimensional pass rushers with the gaudy numbers.

Yeh, yeh.....they were great back then but compared to what we have had to play with lately. this group is a vast improvement to say the least. Last year we had two guys trying to play every down, at least now we have a decent bench to go with a solid starting front. We have much improvement this year and we needed it desperately.

I can't see any room for Big Dan on this squad at all.

I don't remember Keisel, ASmith or Big Snack subbing out much. I remember when Keisel would sub in for VonOlhoffen.

This team has the potential to control the LOS on bith sides of the ball against virtually any team. I know everyone loves the fantasy players and the stats, the throws the catches and runs but football will always be won by the men in the trenches. Like I said that previous group was amazing. I just dont know if they could get after the passer the way this group might. And I do have to emphasize might. I know everyone ***** on zone defense but if you can bring it with four and put 7 in zone. There is nothing wrong with that.

You mean when Hampton would come off the field every third down? Yep...no reason to be subbed out I guess.

I remember in third-down situations where we would move to 2 defensive line men and had the two defensive ends on the field if that's what you mean.

its final chance for big Dan, when he was drafted DL coach Mitchell said eventually he wanted him to plat at DE at times but because of the wieght Dan came into thr NFL he straightaway said this year he will strickley play inside. If he can get down to 340 at 6"6 he can play a few reps at DE Tyson could be used as DE in 4 man front so if we were to line up in a dime or nickel look say 4-2-5 tampa 2 a 4 man front could that could throw off guys like Dalton, Flacco who have seen and figured out the 2-4-5 sending mix of 3-4-4 2-4-5 and 4-2-5 would make them double think some of thier play calls.
front 6
DE Aluala
NG Mcullers
3T Heyward
DE Tuitt
LB Shazier
LB Dupree

the dl is to give gravedigger rest and at times tuitt kicks in and mcullers goes out for Walton.

a dime look
DE Dupree
DT heyward
DT Alaula
DE Hargrave
LB Shazier
LB Watt
