Hey guys,

Fresh off the final podcast of the year. It's the end of the season. Let's vent, get it out, and recover as a fanbase.

What are you all feeling tonight?

Line up the questions. I'll be back on around 8ish when my daughter goes to bed.

Peace and love to the best fanbase in football. Here's to hoping 2020 is the season we've all been waiting for!

I went to the local hardware store and tried to buy duct tape and sky nails. The tape they had but not the nails. I asked if they knew where to get some. They asked what they are for. I said to keep the sky up, it seems it is falling. Do you know where to buy some sky nails or should I just get a sturdy umbrella and hunker down?

I'm feeling like a dope for having a scintilla of belief in this team. I don't care if it was Bucky Hodges who was behind Center, scoring 10 points in 3 consecutive games is putrid. I think it was Kozora who said that hasn't happened to the Steelers since like WWII.

Any rumblings of an OC change? I read somewhere Tomlin stated Fichtner did a 'great job' this season. Yikes.

Follow up question, where would you rank Fichtner among, say... our last 5-6 offensive coordinators? ie, Haley, Arians, Whisenhunt, Mularkey, Gilbride, Sherman....

Happy New Year Cope!

No no, fantastic job. Yes. He actually said that.

Will Cain be that 4th WR for this group? Didn’t get many snaps, but caught some balls. Some have said he’s a sleeper for us in the future. Work in OTAs and camp should get him acclimated to be the guy to take the top off on the safeties next year, don’t you think?

Another question Cope.....

Cut McDonald to keep Hargrave? I heard we save $7 mil if McD is gone. Could use it to keep those 4 DL on strength. (Cam/Tuitt/Hargrave/Alalua). Grab a TE in the draft.

Or, Keep McD and draft another DT/NG?

I'm making big changes in 2020---I believe that the Steelers will be doing so as well, particularly in selecting a QB in this draft. So, do we pick a QB w/ our second round pick???

College football has hotter cheerleaders

Go Gators!

Better to start digging a hole for a solid bunker. Then sky falling won't be an issue. Gonna need more duct tape! ;)

No, we're fans. We're diehards. We believe this team is special, and they made a good runs. Late injuries couldn't cover from the rebound from the early injuries. Sad way to finish, but this team will be battle tested and deep next year when all the health returns.

HNY Tibs!

Whiz was my all time favorite OC. He understood what it took to win games. He wasn't afraid of taking chances. And he knew how to deploy gimick plays that were successful more often than not. They were part of the offense the entire 2005 playoff run for the SB. Loved him for that, and tough to defend since we were a run first team with a young QB.

Fichtner would be middle of the pack for me Whiz, Ariens, before him. Gibride and Sherman after him. Essentially equal to Haley IMHO.

Ok with a clear view of the roster with the season end, who do you keep and who do they bring in... in free agency?

Money wise you can only keep one, if you keep one with Hargrave and Dupree. It's Dupree hands down in that instance. I draft a NT or try to find a cheap vet fill in.

Vance has to be gone. $7M isn't worth it if he can't stay healthy, and aside from 2 years ago, he can't. He still hasn't played all 16 games in a season with us and he ain't getting any younger. Vannett is a possibliity, but he has to be cheap. He's a good #2, he's not a #1. I really like CSW on the roster. He got hurt in preseason, but looked like he had the inside track to #3 before the injury. He's 6'9" and athletic as hell being a rugby player. I'm really hoping he pans out since we've invested 3 years in him.

Finney > Foster. I don't touch Foster. Too expensive and too old at this point.

Burns and Davis are gone

ST, I'd really like to keep Kanaday and Matekevich. Both played at a pro bowl level this year.

Cain is a young guy, but he's one dimensional. He's a Z only receiver, but what he does well is attack the football in the air and catches it at its highest point consistently. He is young, but he provides good depth. He has upside being so young, so I'm excited to see if he can develop into something more. I also like signing Quadree back. He's a legit X with slot potential and KR/PR depth. Switzer does nothing for me going forward, and the Steelers have to find a legit slot receiver to compliment JuJu as the big slot.

Oh what is the draft needs in order of importance?

My #1 is different than most. My #1 is a Center. Pouncey is losing his ability to snap, and I fear his injury was an ACL. We'll find out if he gets surgery in the next few weeks.

TE is a need, since Gentry is the only rostered TE.
NT is a need and can be taken later, since it's not a priority for most teams
$B I'd love to see the Steelers draft a legit moneybacker. Edwards isn't big enough, and is having trouble with coverage. Plus it's great to have diverse players that can play both the run and pass from the secondary since we're in nickel, dime, and dollar a lot now.

Depth needs at CB, RB, and OL.

If we lose Davis, Safety depth rises, but can be replaced by the moneybacker. Same with Dupree, if he leaves, EDGE is a need. Another reason why I think the Steelers retain Bud. No draft capital and expensive to replace as a FA. Plus we have the inside track to keep him with the Franchise Tag (if needed).

Would football be more fun with rotating goal posts?

No. It's tough enough as is. Moving back the XP made it tough enough.

I'm just happy Boz locked it down this season and only missed 2 freakin kicks. Huge props to the coaches to hang on to him, when most teams would have dumped him during the season last year. Boz is back!!

Yes, moneywise and health wise, McDonald is gone. I just can't fathom paying $7M on a health question mark.

For me that $7M goes to signing Dupree, not Hargrave. As I said before, Dupree is way more valuable to this D than Hargrave. Especially if Tuitt and Hargrave can play healthy together for one year.

So my answer is I don't keep either, and I draft a TE and NG. NGs can be had later in the draft, since they lack value to most teams. Problem is we won't get an impactful TE in this draft with our positioning. We'll just get a guy.

With three games to go, what was your outlook with respect to making the playoffs?

I felt confident they'd make it in, but also had a nagging feeling they'd blow it.

No way do I select a QB. With limited picks, and getting Ben back, you cant spend a pick on a QB. Too many needs if they're trying to win now.

Plus I'm not pulling the ripcord on Rudolph yet. He can make all the throws, and will have a year of experience under him. Just remember, he was lights out before his concussion. When he came back in for Duck in the Jets game, he had no problem moving the ball down the field. I think if he didn't separate his shoulder, we win that game. In his 3rd year, if he continues to improve, he may develop yet into being a good NFL QB.

I was confident as well. The problem was, Duck never had a game without a Fumble or INT. That was the killer. Rudolph came back in the Jets game and looked great, then got hurt. If he was healthy, who knows what would have happened. His stronger arm would have gotten 9 out of the box in Baltimore.
