By Jessica Costello SteelerNation.com There are a couple of Pittsburgh Steelers defensive starters that could be preparing for and browsing other options come March. A couple of free agents that seem to be stirring up quite the speculations are outside linebacker, Bud Dupree and defensive tackle, Javon Hargrave. Their performances during the 2019 season didn’t […]

Hargrave's pass rush ability will be missed, but I think the Steelers could use a little more of a run defender at the position.

Bud's question-mark is can he maintain that same energy after you throw him some money.

I got a feeling they are gonna keep Bud and let Hargrave walk. And they are gonna regret it. I don't have a problem with franchising Bud if they can, but I'd be leary of a long term deal when you got Watt and Fitzpatrick the next two years. In my opinion this teams cap is badly mismanaged.

No way they can afford to sign Bud long term, unless they get him on the cheap, but there's teams out there with space that I bet would throw 18per at him on a long deal, with alot guaranteed that we can't match. I see them tagging him. Watt is the guy that you give a big contract to next offseason, then you have Minkah the following offseason. You still have JuJu and Cam this offseason, along with the rest of the offense.
Also don't forget, if Nelson has another very good season, they'll want to renew him next offseason as well.

Nice analysis, both benefited from the monster pro bowlers next to them in Watt and Heyward. Given the current investment in tuitt and Heyward and the fact that the 3rd DLineman is seldom used and that he isn't a true NT there's little chance he stays.

Now Dupree is another story, he is a good OLB but not a great one so I would pursue a long term contract that is in the average value of the 2nd tier of current contracts in the market, 12-14M avg for 4 years. If he wants more then you can rent him for one year with the tag while you find a another option

NICE write up Jessica and thank you.

I see them losing Gravedigger but somehow keeping Durpee. Paying to much and hurting the CAP responsibilities. I hope I'm wrong and that's why I'm no caprologist .

It is easier to replace a DL than it is an edge rusher and I am not sure we have a replacement for Bud in the wings. Yea, i know the love affair with OLA around here and he has flashed, but I haven't seen enough to believe he is a full time starter. That leaves you with Chick at this point. I'm not sure the team really has a reasonable option right now but to franchise Bud although it does occur to me they might consider the non-exclusive tag. Yea, that could put us in a spot to rely on OLA or Chick, but there would be two first rounders out of it.

First time i saw Gravedigger live, i was amazed by his quicks off the snap. I hate to see him go, but the numbers are going to drive that ship.
