On paper it looks like hell, but Steelers have a lot of high priced players (Ben, Pouncey, DeCastro, Haden, Nelson, etc...) going into their final contract year.
When you extend, you can clear a lot of 2021 cap hit. An extension just for Ben will clear 20 mil plus. Also over the cap shows us currently with close to 10 mil
of space available in 2020. If not used, that will move to 2021. We might not be in good cap position, but it seems manageable.

Agreed... but thence again we don’t know how the cap will play out if covid continues to drain stadium revenues... it may not impact next year as much since tgey stretched out the losses, but if it’s worse than normal there may not be cap space to extend Without hitting cap hell sometime in the next three years

Dude for ten years fans have been harping about money but every year the Steelers handle their business and still bring in free agents.

I am not worried even with the cap adjustment, the Steelers will simply adjust. Not so simple for me but for their top experts not mission impossible Ethan.

I can say for high certainty that the STEELERS caprologist has maneuvered / manipulated / and guessed every scenerio conceivable in thier realm of cap space. I'm similar to slash's assessment, this thing will play out and our specialist caprologist will again amaze many a many here.

Every year is different. Some years we have lot of good quality free agents to re-sign with some cap space. Other years the Steelers have little cap space to maneuver, but don't have many quality free agents to resign.

In 2021 if a perfect storm. We are negative 15 million in cap space asa of right now and several quality starting players to re-sign. Getting the cap to a positive number to re-sign the rookies would be step one.

We have seven starters who opened the season ( if you included Hilton ) up for free agency. Dupree, Ju-ju, Big Al, Feiler, Conner, Banner, and Alualu. I woud say Dupree, Big Al, and Feiler are gone and their replacements won't be as good. Our depth will take a big hit as we'll.

It's going to be a very tough year.

This is 2020 so what happens in 2021 is an unknown. You rattle on like chicken little but it still doesn't change this teams diligent approach the single solitary thing that doesn't change year to year. Will the Steelers lose some players? Sure as there has to be some turnover to allow a new draft class. As far as the money goes they will manipulate contracts as the usually do. And fill any void as they usually do in free agency. Like clockwork you will be subsequently worry about 2022 next year claiming the sky is falling. Some fans are near sighted.

According to Dale Lolley at DK Sports, as of right now,, Pitt is 15 million under the current cap. Whatever is under the cap at the end of the league year is rolled over as credit for 2021. Coach wants to dramatize the Cap Armageddon for the Steelers when actually every team will be affected. With the exception of maybe 4 or 5, most teams teams will be close to the cap $175 million. Philly is one of several teams who will be close if not over $100 million over the cap.

The league, nor the union is going to want a whole bunch of vets being let go in 2021 because the cap necessitates releasing them. Have a huge amount of FA available isn’t what players want, when they know teams can’t afford them.

Coach despises this team’s front office and coaching staff, and would love to see them fail. But the fact is the League and NFLPA will renegotiate the cap to probably somewhere close to what it is now, and float recovery of lost revenue in future years. They don’t want half a dozen teams $50-100 mil over the cap gutting their teams because of COVID in 2020. This year has been unprecedented, has impacted all walks of life and business. There is no template to recover, things will be figured out uniquely for all avenues.

Hey idiot, educate yourself. The salary cap could very well drop in 2021. Also next I am taking about 2021, not 2022.

No charge

No dipshit the cap will not go below what they already declared you maroon. The king of uneducation has no room to throw stones.

I think I've told you twice already Coach. Hope it sinks in this time.

Cap floor next year is $175M. It can't fall under that because that was the agreed upon number BEFORE players and teams agreed to play football this year.

The only change to that $175M is if it goes higher, because it can't go lower.

Say it one more time so it might sink in...

Agree that it's too big to fail and they won't let half the league take on too much water.

"Hate" may be a strong word, however, the Steelers can be very insular in their approach. Greatest strength IE "continuity" can be greatest weakness at times. They can be smug and seemingly content with Coach "Never Had a Losing Season" when other teams like the Ravens find creative ways to outflank them and get a jump on the present and future.

I hate what the FO and coaches have done with BLM and the terrible optics with AV in Chicago and in Week 1 with the poorly vetted helmet decal. That was a dumb, unforced error. The Post Gazette did a poll and found that 78% of people believe the team's approach to "social justice" issues has been ineffective and/or divisive.

So, in that sense, I'm not a big fan of the FO and Tomlin. They're promoting much ignorance in the face of serious issues and division in the country.

I also think they perhaps need to fail in order to find the humility or impetus to change the approach with Tomlin who hasn't won enough. If we continue to cheerlead another decade with 3 playoff wins, then SBs will be as distant a memory as they were by the mid-00's. So, would love to see things "shaken up" -- only that won't happen with more 8-8 to 10-6 seasons under Tomlin.

Sure, 26 other teams would be happy with that year after year. But, the Steelers are a flagship franchise.

I am curious in the last 10 years what was out highest "Cap Space"....I can't remember any year with a significant amount ready to spend.

Where you knew you had decent options....

Well for one they signed a CB for their highest free agent contract ever. You don't do that being up against the cap without knowing what you are doing. Another year they seemingly had a half a dozen of their own to resign and did. It isn't what you have available to spend it is being able to manipulate the amount you do have to stock talent. They revamped their secondary through various degrees of manipulation with only Edmunds being a home grown prospect. I see the debate for coaching and bad decisions here and there but as far as manipulating the cap few are better.

I said the salary cap could go down, it depends on revenue. Do you know what the word could means?

The 2020 cap is 198.2 million. Show me a source that guarantees it will be higher than that in 2021? How backing up your BS for a change? The floor that is set is lower than the 2020 number. Hence the cap number could go down next year ( Are you reading this Cope )

Also take a look at our free agents. With little cap space its going to be a tough 2021. Even you are smart enough to figure that one out.

Dumbass the cap floor is 175 million next year for every team if you are using a higher figure it is obvious it can go down as the cap floor again is 175 million. This year they are under the cap so it matters not right?

You seem confused repeat after me

the cap floor for next year is 175 million.

Yeah I am sure you understand the concept of different routes you can't even decipher what we are telling you in regards to the cap.

So what is the floor for the cap next year?

say it I know ya can !

hello boys and girls the word for the day is slow can you say slow?

Before you hem har and slobber over the differential one Ben restructure would put that in the rear view mirror. You know from that guy that has been hinting at playing longer as of late.

The cap for 2021 was 175, as collectively bargained via emergency review, by the league and NFLPA in March this year because COVID started shutting everything down and the 2020 season appeared in jeopardy.

Since the league worked out a return to limited operations to have Training camps and reduced (then removed) the preseason, 2020 was set to be implemented, and of course has been.

The cap will NOT remain 175 mil in 2021, because almost every team will be at least 10 mi over that figure. As stated previously, the majority of teams are going to be 20-50 mil over the 175 cap. Philly will be all most 100 mil over 175. There are a few others (Jets, Saints) as well, but most everyone else will be in that 10-50 mil range.

Teams will have to start flushing their huge contracts with veterans so as to get under the cap, which will flood the FA market with now out work vets. The league and NFLPA will NOT let that happen and again there is already talk that after the season both will have another emergency session to amend the agreement to increase the cap for 2021, to at least to what it is now, so as to prevent those vets getting cut because cap related salary purges. Any loss revenue will be absorbed/recovered via spreading out the loss for several years beyond 2021. Simple economics.

Try not to be so myopic about this topic, because the situation is fluid and some stadiums are now starting to allow fans, thus reducing the impact of loss of revenue, minuscule as it may be. It may improve even more with the CV19 serum being possibly released by thanksgiving. Then again, there may be another wave of outbreaks and everything will shut down again. The league or union doesn’t know. Neither do you, nor I or anyone else for that matter. It’s only speculative on your part, as limited as your opinion is.

^this^

Neither the league nor the players have any motivation to come it at or lower than this years cap for next year. They will circle the wagons after this season is done and they have actual numbers to work with and come up with a solution. I am sure there will be some difficulties especially for the teams you cite such as Philly, but overall, I expect teams to be able to adapt. Even knowing the possible floor next year, teams have still inked some big time contracts. Leads me to believe they do not expect the 175 floor to be the reality next year. Just enjoy this year and let us see what the new year brings is my thought.

Ben will be extended to free up cap room — cuz yeah he’ll be playing

He is also the ULTIMATE team / company guy. He has restructured seveARAL times through his career and the TEAM chooses to push money into the future. This is the team decision and he accepts it. FOR those calling for him to take a "hometown" discount don't realize his wages are partly for PAST services rendered. Is anyone willing to give back a portion of last year's paycheck? Hell no so think about that when asking for him to take a discount.

All restructuring does is give a player more money upfront. Nothing altruistic about it.

Might have to be an uncapped year next year, just to get through this clusterfuck.
