By Matt Papiernik, @Matt_Papiernik on Twitter SteelerNation.com   In case you didn’t see my previous articles, I am going to be publishing several articles breaking down the contracts, performance, and likelihood that certain players will be members of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020. Now that the off-season is in full view for the team, there […]

I'd say 10% chance is about right. Too much money for a backup/ST player and the Steelers need the cap space and have a couple younger cheaper guys in Ola and Skipper with more upside.

won't be popular, but if they don't tag or sign Bud, Chick will be here and may start. He is gone if they keep Bud.

First Ballot HOFer gonna retire early?

Why are we keeping Ola & Skippy if they can't beat out a Chickillo? Seriously, if Antony makes the roster and those two clowns are sitting....... then they should be released and get some talent in here because Chick isn't talent, he's a CAP VAC.

Agree with DIC and Hoot. Ola hasn't shown much when given the chance, and they released Skipper for a reason. This will be a more difficult decision than most of us think. I can't see them keeping Bud and TJ both without loosing other key players, but they have surprised us before.

Keep in mind like Deebo sometimes it takes a few years to click. Maybe they are holding on based on what they see as potential.

There was a little sarcasm in the cutting Ola & Skippy and I hear what you are saying BUT one very important thing within your staement

DEBO would have beat out Chickillo from day one.

I am not sure on that, hindsight as they say is always 20/20 (particularly for Coach) but who knows, he was cut multiple times.

If they don't tag or sign Bud, I'm thinking Chick will still be gone. They'll need his cap space to help with signing a vet TE and to help shore up some other positions (OLB, DL, OL) before the draft. Plus, you have Skipper and Ola to take his place on ST (If not Bud's on Defense).
Writing is on the wall. The Steelers never planned on paying Chick the full value of his contract; and he knew it when he signed it.

Yes, he is an easy cap cut. His contract was absolutely written with the big escalator in pay timed to the Bud decision. He was insurance, and, yes, he knew it. If Bud is gone, I think they keep Chick...not sure the others are ready to take over that position full time. I'm not sure Chick is either, but he is the most accomplished/experienced of the group. I don't see him getting cut if Bud isn't done...not before camp and someone beats him out. Easy cap hit or no, you still have to have someone able to man the spot. Seems Ola hasn't sold the team as a complete package as of yet. I get it, he was the darling of training camp and I want to see him as much as anyone, but that isn't how coaches function.

They had 10 X the talent of Chickillo in front of DEBO so that helped with his release. Chick isn't 10 X the talent of either Ola or Skippy.
