By G.Stryker www.SteelerNation.com James Washington is an anomaly. He’s on the shorter side at 5’11”, but he’s stocky and weighs 213. Looking at him, he doesn’t have the build of a receiver. He is barrel chested, and looks more like a running back or strong safety, yet gets open deep as good as anyone in […]

To me it is about comparison to Bryant last year. They tried and tried to get the ball deep to Bryant. He one a few, seemed to get overthrown some and out battled some. The other thing they tried to do was the hitch and bubble game. They seemed to try that from the onset of the preseason. I found that to be a total disaster. They didn't do enough of what really worked which was skinny posts against off man using his body to shield the defender. I'm hoping Washington will be more successful on the deep pass vs. single coverage. He might not have wiggle, but he looks pretty strong so on those screens and sugar routes he could be like a running back.

I complained about Bryant lack of burst last year. And he even admitted to not being a workout warrior prior to his year off.

Those two things shouldn't be a problem with Washington, which somewhat limits his bust potential.

I think he is going to pleasantly surprise a lot of people when it is all said and done.

One thing is for sure if he doesn't star, it won't be because a lack of effort.

Some guys are just better at adjusting to the ball in the air and using their body to keep the defender away from the ball. What I saw in the video he was really good on the deep ball over the shoulder, boxing the defender out.

And let me add, expecting Washington to be the second coming of JuJu or having his rookie productivity just isn't the case. JuJu was a complete receiver. Washington is only a deep ball threat at this point. I think he can be a better threat than Bryant was last season, but he is not the same caliber receiver as JuJu.

That deep ball threat is enough to start out with, as Juju seems like the perfect slot WR.

I love the potential from the three................ (AB/JuJu/JW)

I think I remember reading Tomlin say that he had the same expectation re: productiveness from Washington as JuJu (for a 1st year WR), which was a little unlike Tomlin and seemed strange to me. But I really like the potential of he, AB & JuJu on the field together.

I do too. He can be very successful in that third receiver role.

Great article with a sharp eye. Washington is going to be better than some think but he won't be a star like AB or even JuJu. The "D" can only cover so many double teamed and Washington on single coverage deep would probably have the advantage. I like our potential and definately am excited to see it in action. Combine the new OC into this mix and WhoALa !!!!!!!
