The Cincinnati Bengals, who had never completed a come-from-behind playoff victory in team history, somehow came from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to take a late one-point lead against the Pittsburgh Steelers on a rainy, epic Saturday night in Cincinnati.

Even better, they picked off Ben Roethlisberger's backup Landry Jones to get the ball back with 1:36 to go. At that point, there was no thought Big Ben could return to the game. The Steelers season looked all but over, as did the Bengals' 25-year playoff drought. Here's how the Bengals managed to blow it, in five easy parts:

1. Jeremy Hill's fumble set up all of the drama to follow. All the Bengals had to do was not fumble. A first down would have won the game. A few runs up the middle, forcing the Steelers to burn their timeouts, would have also set up a field goal attempt to give the Bengals a four-point lead with little time remaining.

Compared to the immaturity to follow, Hill's fumble seems destined to be overshadowed. Yet it was the biggest play of them all. Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, who had a monster night with two forced fumbles and 13 tackles, got the ball out of Hill's hands. Hill was understandably devastated after the game.

2. Big Ben improbably re-entered the game with 1:23 left and a bum shoulder. (It makes you wonder: why not try putting him in the game the drive before?) Roethlisberger said after the game that he told coach Mike Tomlin that he couldn't throw the ball deep. But the Bengals did not send pressure at Roethlisberger throughout the final drive, allowing him to dink and dunk his way up the field.

3. The Steelers had fourth-and-3 on their own 41-yard line with just 28 seconds remaining. The Bengals just needed to make one defensive play to win the game. On the snap, the Bengals chose to rush only three defensive lineman. Antonio Brown quickly beat Leon Hall on the play to pick up the first down before taking their third and final timeout.

This continued a streak by the Bengals coaches. Given the chance, they often chose not to be aggressive.

4. Roethlisberger finally tested his arm with a pass over the middle to Brown on the next play, overshooting him. But Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was called for a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness with 22 seconds left after taking a late shot at Brown that clearly hit him in the helmet. The ball was well past Brown before the hit, and Brown was concussed on the play.

If Burfict hadn't committed the penalty, the Bengals were in great shape to win the game. The Steelers were just past midfield with only 18 seconds left, trailing by one. Burfict played on the edge all night, and he went over it at the worst time imaginable.

5. Even after Burfict's penalty, they were only in position for a 50-yard field goal try. They probably had time left for one more play. But Adam "Pacman" Jones ruined an otherwise incredible season with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he lost his cool on the field. On the next play, Steelers kicker Chris Boswell connected on the game-winner.

Apparently Steelers coach Joey Porter set Jones off.

"The (expletive) ref did a horrible (expletive) job," Jones said in an Instagram video he later deleted. "You got (Steelers linebacker coach) Joey Porter in the middle of the (expletive) field talking (expletive) to everybody and then when somebody says something to him ... he isn't even supposed to be on the (expletive) field."

And the Steelers weren't supposed to be in the Divisional Round. This should have been the Bengals' night for a magical comeback, but they found the most painful way imaginable to blow it.

yeah, you would think a writer for NFL.com would know better

All you hear from Bengal fans is 'refs refs refs Steelers are dirty.... once in a blue moon they gripe about Marvin Lewis.... Not a peep about the OC... The team Didn't score a point for 3 quarters against a rather bad secondary... 3 freaken quarters... One of their two TDs came after a long PI call that easily could have been overlooked. Not a peep about their Backup QB, who acted like he had never played in the rain before (Jizzno:SEC CHAMPION QB... NOTHING GOING TO BOTHER HIM....?) Dud switched from no gloves to gloves to different gloves to the micheal Jackson one and none and back.... He dropped and mishandled how many balls? half of his passes were wounded ducks... Then , of course, the vaunted Bengals D... who let two guys no Bengal fan had likely EVER heard of (well most are Ohio State fans, but its not like they pay attention to those other teams players, right?) Put up decent numbers...

The bengals didn't deserve to win... they were gifted 142 yards in penalties, had a whistle nullify a TD, were lucky another guy was down before he fumbled or that would have been a td as well... Yes moron 1 &2 gifted the game, and the fumble was horrible at the end, but they had no business being in the game at all because they played that lousy for 3 straight quarters... If that loss happened here the list of parties from the team we'd be roasting would be a mile long.... but I guess we are that much in their heads that all they can see is "steelers-refs"

If laundry beats manning i will declare this a team of destiny... In that case bring on the pats

Not so fast. I saw that KC game, they are playing some impressive ball out there. Don't be surprised if the Cheetahs get bounced in the divisional.

I tend to agree here...I said this to my son after week 16 that I thought the Chefs were the class of the AFC right now....their problem...they have Andy Reid as coach...he struggles in the playoffs...and now with the Maclin injury thats gonna hurt them as well

If 1) Burfict doesn't make a dirty and unnecessary hit and 2) Jones jogs back to his sideline while an injured Steeler is attended to, the Bungles win this game. Jones wasn't flagged because of Joey Porter, he was flagged for pushing a ref.

I swear one of these days a Bengal loss to Cleveland will be blamed on the Steelers, the refs, and the fact that their mommies didn't hug them enough as kids... That teams ****** up the whole game, had a couple ok drives aided by refs in the 4th, completely blew it in full stupid fashion, then blamed everyone but themselves

Well, the NFL is circling the wagons after the initial "that was an embarrassment", "I'm ashamed to have been a Bengal", "Meltdown in Brown town", etc. the NFLN and Brandon Marshall had effing Pacman Jones on to tell his "side" of the story and now all of a sudden he's a stand up guy for coming on the show. Esiason and Phil Simms' kid are now saying that Shazier's hit was more egregious than Burfict's, that Porter was the problem, blah, blah, blah, what a bunch of losers.

That's why its important to get social media facts out first... most people just watch highlights and listen to blather... and the spin can make perception the fools reality

Just a reminder.....all season long, when ever I happened to be in a thread were someone referred to how good the bungles were, not to sleep on them, yadda, yadda, my response was "Marvin will **** this up." And in the end he did. This is ON HIM!

You know what guys ... have you ever heard the saying " The lady doth protest too much, methinks" Typically when someone is running off at the mouth is because they are trying to JUSTIFY their actions and will SAY anything to prove it ..

Like the little kid that just got his hand caught in the cookie jar -- Wasn't me mom .. it was the dog --- The average person will see through this crap -- the Stupid people will buy it ..

Jeremy Hill's reaction to his fumble is priceless.

If you listen to the broadcast, that's actually his reaction to Burfict's PF penalty. He was pouting on the sidelines before that play, and when the penalty occurred he lost it.

Still extremely priceless though.
