Starting to look at the draft class and mostly positions of need. With Bell being tagged and some of his comments the need at RB obviously increased exponentially. But watching tape on these guys and after Barkley there’s a lot of guys I’d take off my board.
Derrius Guice seems to be the consensus #2 back. Looked good in shorts at the combine, he’s young like Bell was at only 20, stats looked decent. Then I watch him vs Alabama, Florida and Auburn and he looks like hot garbage. Look at his game log and he piles up yards vs ****. Watched the BYU game (55th vs run) and he never once got touched before he’s 2 yards past the LOS. Usually he was 5-6 yards. A better back would have had 200+ yards. He’s not a day one or two pick IMO.
Ron Jones II would probably be the consensus #3 back in the draft. IMO he’s the only other first round consideration. I think day two is more likely but there’s a HUGE difference between him and Barkley but there’s even a bigger gap between him and my #3 back. He has elite speed, good vision, understands pass pro, and though has limited film catching seems to be a natural hand catcher.
My #3 back might be a surprise but it’s Sony Michel. Elite speed, loose hips, good burst, and again can pass protect. But IMO he’s a third round pick in my book.
Looking at Barkley he’s so much better than any running back I’ve seen since Adrian Peterson. Iowa used a 2 LB 1 safety set which was ineffective because Barkley was so much better than Joey Jewell and 41 & 27. Ohio State used Baker, Fuller, and Jones or Booker to track #26. A better offense coordinator would have had Gesicki eat them alive over the middle with play action. But watching tape Barkley for most the season occupied 3 defenders. Three. He regularly played vs top 40 run defenses and stole their lunch money. He even saved PSU in their Bowl vs #1 run defense Washington going for 137 on 18 carries and 2 scores and added 7 receptions for 38 more. He wasn’t supposed to play a lot because he was going pro and Franklin didn’t want to risk injuring him. But he has a passion for football and a desire to win and help his teammates.
At this point I’d honestly trade Bell, our first round pick for #1 and their #65. I’d do it every time and wouldn’t hesitate.
