Watched games with a friend who I've coached a lot of football with. He is a high school HC. He made a good point. Steelers need a HC with an OC background. If you look at the final four and most of the final 8 its a lot of guys calling their own plays. You can always find a guy to DC. And even if he is great he is less likely to get snapped up. You keep continuity with the HC being the OC and he cant hide behind others failure.

Meh. I'd still just rather have a head coach and 2 assistants that are allowed to do their jobs, including calling plays. The head coach shouldn't be calling plays. He should be figuring out how to screw up calling a challenge or using the clock or other difficult tasks like that.
We've nailed the second part of that.

That point has been obvious for years, unless you felt Haley and Fichtner were good, and firing Arians was a good move. Ah, Tomlin,,,,,We have no offensive identity, and our best offense coach ( Munchak ) left us.
The standard remains the standard, and the result has been no playoff wins since 2016. 3-7 in the last ten playoff games, and a lot of watching other teams in the playoffs.
Our problem is that Tomlin has hired poorly, not continuity... Arians is a very good position coach and a pretty decent head coach, but as OC he gets one dimensional trying to attack deep.
Haley wasn’t horrible... he got overly conservative at times but he balanced things out better. He probably was a bad fit for the team’s chemistry though
Fitchner was just scared to death playcalling...
... the assistant coaches have been abysmal though...
Joey porter stunted Despres... the DBs coaches until recently have been a comedy of errors.
Two of his three oline coaches were utter disasters..
We never adequately replaced the most underrated assistant coach of all time in Dick hoak
And how Danny smith has survived multiple purges is beyond me... cowher fired special teams coaches for virtually any perceived screw up... he went through them like a drunk through a case of beer...
I mean seriously take a look at this position staff over his time here... who were the guys that really helped a position... Mitchell, who is always superb, butler coaching the linebackers, but they were cowher holdovers...
Munch fixing the oline scheme from the arians/zierlein catastrophe.. Dunbar and Olsavsky both seem like good hires... there really aren’t many standouts..

Have to stay away from the non experienced hires that were good football players. In regards to positional coaches. Not sure why they fail at OC.

The overall COACHing from the top. CMVLT approves the over all scheme. Cowher fired Sherman when he seen it failing and took over the OC calls (temporary). Do you think Cowher would have let this past season charade to have continued? Hell no and that is HEAD COACHING ability.
Don't get me wrong as TOMLIN has ability but that ability is becoming narrower and narrower.

The point of having a good OC as HC is you are set at that coaching position which is probably the most important. While it was clear that Ariens would have gotten Ben killed, the Bucs threw deep 5 times last night an dBrady never got killed.
We can't keep blaming Tomlin, how is he responsible if other teams keep taking his assistants all the time?
Tomlin is stubborn as hell, simple as that, it has to be his way. That's why, whether it's been BA, Haley, Randy, we always come out super conservative vs bad teams, especially on the road, play it safe not to lose and we'll just win because we're better.
I agree here. If the talent is remotely even, he is sunk. With the exception of a boatload of turnovers by the defense. It is almost impossible to understand how this guy retained his job. Mind boggling actually. Though I think Harbaugh is a better coach, his situation is pretty similar. Other coaches call his defense and offense The difference is the quality of those coaches.
So true. Arians and a DB coach a few years ago and Arians was not retained. Very challenging losing that quality.

I don’t think it has to do with a HC calling plays, it has to do with quality coordinators. Haley has been the best OC the Steelers have had. He may have worn out his welcome, but if he was here this year, the Steelers wouldn’t have gone one dimensional and wouldn’t have imploded at the end of the year. Canada was a decent hire but I have my concerns. First, it’s his first NFL experience as an NFL play caller. An NFL defense is much tougher than a college defense. Second, will Canada fully implement his scheme? It’s the biggest change in philosophy that the Steelers may have ever had on offense. Canada is the “authority” on this type of offense. Again, I don’t know if it’ll fool any defenses like it did in college, but he’s shown he can be successful with it. At the very least, I feel more confident with him as and X’s and O’s guy than Fichtner.
I get what you are saying, but he doesn't get quality and the point is if you actually get quality as an OC you have him for maybe 2 years before he is an HC. So WHEN the team is hiring, lets kill two birds with one stone. Get the best available OC and HC prospect.
Like lets pretend Canada is a wonderkin on the play calling and the offense takes off. The Defense flounders and ownership finally has enough of Tomlin. Canada is up for HC jobs. Why not just hire the best OC/ HC candidate. *Obviously this won't happen because Canada is a Tomlin hire*

Don't we in essence have that with Tomlin on the defensive side? I don't disagree with the point, but good play callers don't always equate to good head coaches. We've seen way too many failed OC's fail to believe this is a surefire method to finding a guy to lead your team.
Yep exactly.
We need X and O coordinators and for the HC to let them call the plays.
Or how about an XO guy as the HC who can fix **** himself and doesn't have to rely on someone else who if they happen to be good are gone. As far as defense vs. offense. I take Offensive minded. you can always hire an old guy who is done with the HC life who knows defense. Its an offensive league. Get an Offensive minded coach.
I would be ok with that too.
What I am not ok with is going 11 and O and losing to the cleveland clowns as a one and done.

Where's Colbert during all this ineptitude regarding assistant coaching. Sure Tomlin has his buddy system, stubbornness, calling and/or directing the defense, in game management etc.. Is Colbert's only function to evaluate scouting reports, directing draft weekend and picking out free agents that we can afford. Doesn't he have any input with coaching hires or telling MT that the state of the Steelers has not been up to what's expected for years. Changes only seem to occur when the fan base and media criticism of a coach (other than Tomlin) become a public relations nightmare.
Is Rooney telling Colbert hands off Mikey T. and he doesn't want in house squabbling. I'm guessing Rooney is more concerned about appearances of unity, cohesion and stability than Super Bowls. Tomlin is what he is, contolled and managed only by his God given short comings. My anger regarding this yearly fiasco is decidedly directed at the real underlying problem, the man that's supposed to be in charge of the organization.

Would love a coach who can game plan an opening drive TD most weeks. Maybe a coach who doesn't rely on his QB to go no huddle to jumpstart the offense. Also a coach who doesn't routinely put LBs on opposing teams top WRs.

I don't believe Colbert is involved in coaching searches and he shouldn't be. Tomlin is the head coach and he should have responsibility of assembling his coaching staff. Now there are a few reasons why the Steelers don't see to get significant names or risers in the coaching industry:
1. A coach has to have some sort of connection to the Steelers or the city of Pittsburgh.
2. Other teams pay more for their assistants.
3. Tomlin is difficult to work with.

I have no problem with the HC deciding who to hire but it's another story when there's a reluctance to fire because of friendship etc. Sometimes the GM needs to move things along. In regards to the other two criteria, who's fault is that to allow it to continue.
I'm not 100% sure of the protocol and I'm sure Colbert is involved. however, Colbert stops when the cleats hit the grass. Tomlin works directly with the coaching staff. There is no way he doesn't have big say on who is on his staff. Now if its a fire. Maybe less. A hire. That's mostly him.
Ive heard the that Steelers assistant coaches collectively, are the lowest paid in the league...
And have been for some time..
