Draft Day Reach, Overvalue, Overdraft, Wrong Round, Good Value, Poor Value.
We have just completed the 2015 draft and lots of terms are being thrown around by the talking heads, terms like the ones you see in this headline above. Many others have embraced these types of terms from NFL coaches to fans. I was also an individual who at one time thought there might be something to this. I have now decided differently for some reasons and observations that I will mention below.
One thing I have noticed is generally the media types seem determined to try and get as much time in their chosen media type as possible. They seem to have no concern as to how this comes about, time for facts seem to carry as much relevance as time for fiction. To paraphrase Samuel Clemons they do not dislike the truth they are just indifferent to it.
One way to make themselves seem more important is to do these mock drafts and their evaluations of players ranking them where they think they should go. Many times the teams that actually draft these players have other ideas as to their value and select them accordingly. Some positions have more value to a team than others. You can call it need or a skill position etc but the fact is some positions require better play on the team than others if the team is going to be successful. A good example of this is quarter back. If this guy plays bad and the rest of the team plays very well you will likely still lose there are exceptions but that is the norm. Other positions have the same effect.
One thing that seems to have not been given enough weight to these picks and their value is can they make the team? How many of the same type of player was selected earlier there by reducing the supply and increasing the value of what was left? For a team to take the best player available at a position they are well endowed with who will only be cut from the team is dumb. Same thing with a player that is best available but not likely better than what you have even if what you have is only so so.
In this draft it looks like the Steelers went after some things in this draft. Pass Rush, Turn Overs, Deep threat. In addition they have shown some long range views in picking positions that will be needs next year and after. In actually looking at the draft and what they picked it looks like they picked a lot of guys that will make the team and be better than some of the guys they already have. That will make this a successful draft and is a trend that they need to continue. It is nice to find one to four starters every year and upgrade depth with other picks. Sometimes you can find more starters than others. Right now it looks like the steelers drafted guys that will make the team better.
