In football a 34 is typically the "three" back to the "four" hole. counter plays often go weak side and involve a double team by the playside linemen on the DT, backside guard pulling to seal the LB and a kickout block on the DE. The kickout block is often assigned to the fullback but the NFL plays things different. Especially when you have a really good WR who isn't afraid to slobbernock the end to open the lane for a superfast back. When it works as drawn on the whiteboard, the result is often a TD. Sometimes it is a record breaking TD.

edit: been years since I watched that play. ward got the CB not the DE. it was a certain PB guard who kicked the DE. Nicely done though I wouldn't have called it a 34 counter myself. but, every pb is different.

EXACTLY right. Willie Parker's Super Bowl Record rushing touch down. That's was the play call.

Does anyone know what play was actually called for the immaculate reception ?

There is a conversation between JB and Suh-weet Titties right before the play, detailed in "Jerome Bettis: A Football Life", in which JB tells Willie that he has only to beat the guy crashing in from the right...to fake a cut and stay inside...******* magical.

66 circle option

That was the original play and it was called by CHUCK NOLL. This is the MOST famous play in all of football

The Immaculate Reception

I'm willing to play claim that the STEELERS have more BIG famous plays than any other team in the history of the NFL.

did a quick search and found this blurb in google boooks: https://books.google.com/books?id=h...oECAwQAQ#v=onepage&q=66 circle option&f=false

for what its worth, seems there is some disagreement of the actual play call in the huddle, but, whatever. Barry says basically the same thing. shrugs...doesn't matter how you skin it - greatest play in Steelers history.

Excellent find SteelChip, the break down shows the play through pictures very well.

2011 Jonathan Dwyer

Below is the breakdown of the play that running back Jonathan Dwyer took 76 yards on his first carry of the game and season.

didn't study it closely, but that might be a difference between professional and youth type football. All the counter action may come from the line. They might not bother with any counter action from the back because it slows it down too much. Dwyer runs to the intended hole. He does no counter action. But all reads by the defense might come from the line action anyhow at that level.

at pop warner and Junior High - this is true from my experience. When I helped coach at HS level, we taught backs counter actions and zone running type concepts. I did see it tried by one coach at Middle School level with limited success.
