24 David DeCastro G Stanford - Slow start. Was supposed to be best OG prospect since Allen Faneca. He never lived up to that, but he is now a pro bowl-level OG. Grade: A

2 56 Mike Adams T Ohio State - Terrible. All he had to do to get drafted in the 2nd round was drive to Pgh and tell them how he was a Steeler fan growing up. Meanwhile, he NEVER showed ANY promise. I have seen him get beat like a red-headed step child in every way possible. Opponents could run around or run over him. I ever say a short LB run his *** over. Grade: F

3 86 Sean Spence LB Miami (Fla.) - Injury. Came back, but we didn't really need to keep him. Grade: incomplete.

4 109 Alameda Ta'amu DT Washington - Just never developed. D

5 159 Chris Rainey RB Florida - Sucks forever. F

7 231 Toney Clemons WR Colorado - F

7 240 David Paulson TE Oregon - D

7 246 Terrence Frederick CB Texas A&M - F

7 248 Kelvin Beachum T Southern Methodist - A for where they got him.

Nearly a completely wasted draft. But I thought Colbert was so super smart?

DeCastro is on the verge of a Pro Bowl.
Adams is a capable backup when healthy.
Spence is a capable backup and special teams player. Can start in a pinch.
Beachum developed into an above average starter.

Doesn't seem even remotely close to being the worst draft ever.

Since when was Adams EVER a capable back up in his entire history in the NFL? You got to be high. He started off terrible and then got worse. Your take is myopic at best.

A pro bowler, another starter, a decent backup who could be on the verge of taking off and 2 fringe players from a late picking order? A underwhelming draft by Steeler standards, def not worst ever tho

Decastro has become an All Pro player, and though Adams turned out to be a bad pick in the second round, landing a decent tackle in the 7th round made up for it.

Spence has flashed potential when on the field, but he had a major setback with that severe knee injury that probably cost him some speed. I think he has chance to be a good player with the Titans.

So, no, not a terrible draft, though far from a great one.

Two starters, one serviceable backup.

OP is reaching at best

Ta'amu and Rainey were both trash from a character standpoint. Beachum looks to be a starting tackle in the league and DeCastro is an all-pro guard. Spence is a quality backup as well. Looks like a good enough draft to me.

Worst post ever?

I'd say the 2008 draft was the worst in recent history, followed closely by 2009.

^^^
Yep

2008 gave us a conspiracy theorist running back and 2009 gave us a one trick pony. Trying to remember other picks from those years is not even worth it

2008 was Mendenhall, Sweed, Davis as the top three. I actually like the Sweed pick but I had no idea he had so many issues. Honestly, I thought he could be our TO - loved the pick. I did not have a problem with the Mendenhall pick but I thought Chris Johnson was better. He either went just before or just after - I forget.

2009 was Hood, Urbik, Wallace as the top three. I liked the Hood pick. Watched him play a bunch when I was living in Missouri and I thought he would be a good NFL player. I did not like Urbik as a tackle and I did not know much about Wallace other than he was fast. I still can't believe that Hood did not pan out for us. Not a bust but he had the physical skills to dominate but never put it all together.

Really, it comes down to Wallace -vs- Mendenhall. I think Wallace was a more impactful player so 2008 wins the draft dumpster fire award.

Yup, take your pick, 1 and 1A in the worthless draft class list. I believe that the 2008 class doesn't even have a player still in the NFL.

COlbert picked three guys with questionable character in Adams, Ta'amu, and Rainey.

Beachum was a steal. Decastro a pro bowl guy. Spence a decent back up. Two starters here = B Not the worst ever.

2009 produced a pro bowl WR, and a serviceable CB. Thats not a terrible draft, by any stretch.

2008. Now THAT was a terrible draft.

Adams was Steelers rookie of the year at RT.

I'd say the worst Steelers drafts in recent memory 2008 & 2009. I don't think anyone drafted lasted thru 2012.

Chris Johnson was selected right after Mendenhall in 2008 and Matt Forte & Ray Rice were the next RB's off the board in the 2nd round then Jamaal Charles in the 3rd round. By name alone you'd probably would want Forte or Charles. But in Mendenhall's 2nd and 3rd year he had 1108 yrds 7 ruTD & 1273 yrds 13 ruTD. Problem is it went down hill from there. Lev Bell could be fairly similar even though he is a Pro Bowler, given his health/injuries he might not even have the opportunity to maximize his potential.

2009 - We had the last pick as Super Bowl champions. It's challenging when you are picking from that position plus you just won a super bowl. Hard to be real with yourself in understanding your areas of need vs. picking best available player. Your areas of need most likely won't provide all pro performances. I like the Mike Wallace pick and our 7th round David Johnson stuck around for a little while and provided some service which is a hit given the selection.

2012 was far from worse... I'd go with 2009 as the worse.

As stated in another thread, it is now looking like from 2008-2012 (5 drafts), we will sign only FIVE of the players drafted to 2nd contracts:

M. Pouncey, C
A. Brown, WR
C. Heyward, DE
M. Gilbert, RT
D. DeCastro, RG (hopefully)

For a team that doesn't use free agency much, getting players from drafts into productive 2nd contracts is pretty critical. And I think part of the struggles we've had from 2012-2015 is directly a result of these poor drafts and multiple misses at finding worthwhile 2nd contract players.

1996 is the worst draft I can remember. Jamain Stephens anyone? 2008 wasn't so great either.

5 players from the 1996 draft have NFL pensions

several had very long NFL careers
