This is a pretty good read laying out two main sticking points of the upcoming season. With out either one being settled, there may be no season.

one of the highlights is player pay. Of course they want FULL SEASON pay once the first tee off occurs and the big revenue hit to be spread out over 9 years.

two, proto call on season closure / screening / ect.

I see the owners side a little on the pay issue. I also see the overall side on the pandemic issue.

If they don't play this season both sides will book massive losses this yea rand because of the drop in cap moving forward as well. Therefore both sides have to assume the risks of a shutdown. You cannot ask owners to guarantee 200 million in salary and say if its done in week 3 tough luck. The owners are already out the preseason which while laughable is funded by the season ticket holder and those who will walk up to see their team. So the owners are already out about 10-15 million on that. Then there are costs baked into the team. So in the CFL where the salary cap is just north of 5 million, the league claimed they would be down 10 million per club without play. While I found that number to be odd, it does underscore there are big costs that don't involve player salaries. This would be exponential for NFL owners.
I've maintained for quite a while that I don't think there will be a season. I enjoy speculating that there will be as I greatly look forward to the hope there will. With the other major sports returning to play a month early, I think we will get a good idea before the season starts. I'd say 70-30 no season.

ALL valid points SteelerSask. BOTH sides need to compromise on the "risk" factor involved. It's easy for an employee to scream "pay me regardless" but they have to realize the employer didn't invent this pandemic and in my eyes, pretty hard to hold them accountable for it, pay-wise.

Maybe the team could license and sell replicas of the "victims" name patches they plan to display on the uniforms for some extra cash.

Should be some big money in that.

They should get paid in quarters. Play the first game they are guarenteed 4 games. Once the fifth is played you are guarenteed 8. If you are on injury reserve for the season but expected to recover for next year you get whatever many games are played. If you are permanently injured there would have to be an arbitration.

How's it so difficult to just pay the players per game? Now, if a player l at the start of the season, but then contracts Covid and is unable to play, they should get the next 2 paychecks guaranteed. Then, it goes week to week from there - all based on symptoms and testing. A player just can't play a couple games, then be done for the season and get full pay, unless they are injured and go on injured reserve - not for Covid. Seems simple to me, but both sides have a lot of money at stake.

Just curious as why you think they should get paid for 4 games even thought they may only play one of them? Are they entitled to pay for no play??

How are the employers responsible for their salaries even though it's a pandemic creating possible shut down?

I wonder if the Pandemic is considered an Act of GOD thus the CBA is questioned ?

The NFL Players Association board of representatives on Friday approved a plan that will have NFL training camp open as scheduled next week.

The league held a meeting with coaches, general managers, presidents and ownership Friday, and it concluded with clubs approving new training camp and roster rules, protocols for operations during the coronavirus pandemic and economics.

The players' board of representatives voted to adopt the proposed changes to the CBA by a count of 29-3, according to a statement from the NFLPA.

"The NFL clubs and the NFL Players Association approved an agreement that broadly resolves all outstanding issues relating to the opening of training camps and start of the 2020 season. Training camps will begin as scheduled," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We have worked collaboratively to develop a comprehensive set of protocols designed to minimize risk for fans, players, and club and league personnel.

"These plans have been guided by the medical directors of the NFL and the NFLPA and have been reviewed and endorsed by independent medical and public health experts, including the CDC, and many state and local public health officials. The season will undoubtedly present new and additional challenges, but we are committed to playing a safe and complete 2020 season, culminating with the Super Bowl."

Among the agreements by NFL teams approved by the players, sources told ESPN:

The 80-man roster deadline is Aug. 16, before padded practice, but teams can have 90-man rosters if they go with a split-squad setup. Some teams have plans to split squads and use stadium and regular practice facilities.

The salary cap remains the same for 2020 at $198.2 million per team, and there is a cap floor of $175 million in 2021 with the possibility of it being higher based on revenue streams.

The loss of any potential revenue will be spread out over the next four years, through 2024.

There will be a fund established to pay back any benefits eliminated as a result of COVID-19 up to 2023, as well as paying back any lost guaranteed money to players.

NFL players considered high risk to COVID-19 can earn $350,000 and an accrued NFL season if they choose to opt out of the 2020 season. Players without risk can earn $150,000 for opting out.

Players who make a team's cut get a $300,000 stipend if the season is canceled and no games are played. If a season is canceled before the cut-down date, players who were on a team in 2019 get $250,000.

Players will have seven days from the time the agreement is officially signed, likely on Monday, to make a decision about whether to opt out for this season, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Based on the proposal, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano, the training camp acclimation schedule will start with four days of COVID-19 testing and then two days of physicals. Days 7-14 will cover strength and conditioning work only and days 15-20 will involve practices in helmets and shells with no pads, the source says.

A maximum of 14 padded practices may be held, but none before Aug. 17. Additionally, there will be one off day per every seven days of work, the source told Graziano.

The NFLPA on Friday said its executive board voted unanimously to approve the proposed changes to the CBA. The NFLPA board of representatives then voted to approve the changes on Friday afternoon.

As of Thursday night, the NFL and NFLPA had been negotiating on three key points: rules for the training camp acclimation period; procedures via which players could opt out of the season for coronavirus-related reasons and what would happen to the contracts of those who do; and how to handle the league's long-term finances and salary caps of future years in the wake of projected 2020 revenue loss as a result of the pandemic.

Tuesday is the reporting date for all teams except for Houston and Kansas City, who report earlier because they are scheduled to play the Thursday night opener.

In my opinion once the padded practices begin the players assume risk. So if a guy blows out his kneep and would have gotten paid something, he should. I think both sides should assume some risk. The owners should assume a quarter at a time.

We are just past opening weekend and the Marlins have a significant outbreak...how is the NFL going to prevent/handle this?

I think that is what the "INJURY CLAUSE" is for, no? If the player gets hurt there is a guarantee settlement or full season pay pending on injury and team player status. I also think there is an injury insurance health policy most players have with-in their respective contracts.

EDIT: The injury thing is already taken care of as the C-19 doesn't change the fact of injury or making it more likely / less likely to happen. There are already things in place for injury....... IR ect.
