Benton wants paid?

Benton is definitely outside the top 30, probably top 60. He's the 3rd best defensive lineman on the Steelers right now.

So Benton has us in a “Hostage” situation…………… similar to Cam when he negotiated the contract before the revised contract.

Salute the nation

$25 million for Benton is ludicrous. I'd give him no more than $15 million, and even that might be too much. If he plays well this year, then you might get to $20 million per.
But that's the thing.......that DK contract is out there now, that Herbig contract is out there now

Do you really think Benton or Porter are looking at those contracts and ain't thinking they should get big numbers? Maybe Khan is a secret agent for the Browns

So just to yank your chain a bit

6 in a year= rotational (Benton) since he’s is a run liability

But averaging 6.1/year for a career (Cam Heyward) is HOF
since he’s good vs the run??

Got it, let me go drop this in the other thread now since that issue is cleared up 🤣
Yes yes it is actually. 6 to 8 sacks a season for interior guy is very good. But if you are a liability against the run......total difference. Its like an inside linebacker who is a truck vs. Run but can't cover anyone. You can't play him 3 downs. Pro Bowl I don't put stock in. All pro I do. 5 times selected 4 times 1st team. Case closed.

I think they needed to draft a good nose tackle for their base but they didn't do that. Maybe they really like Black or think Day is the answer but regardless they either have to change schematically to adjust to their players or they have to develop Black or hope Day is the answer. Maybe the Day signing is the sign that Benton is gonna only be used as a penetrator now. I have read Graham likes to rotate a lot and Cam is now 37. I guess they keep Day and Black as the nose in the base and rotate Harmon, Cam and Benton a bunch. If Benton can focus on one role and they completely eradicate his nose role then we can finally see what he's worth but I wouldn't sign him to big money until he proves he can be special. They have misused him early in his career. A nose is a nose and pretty much nothing else.

Porter has already proven it. Sign him. Worry about Benton later and if you lose him just draft another lineman to replace him

Absolutely. The only way Rudy should stay is if we keep 4 QBs (unlikely) or Howard looks awful in camp and preseason

All the tea leaves point towards Rudy staying tho, DK (the journalist) is on record saying the team wants a QB behind Aaron who can step in and win a game now, which I think is code for they want Rudy or a vet at #2. This is the problem-the brass think they are contending for a Super Bowl now and that’s delusional
I've seen two very distinct lines from local reporters.

1. Exactly what you just said. The Steelers won't trust a young QB behind Rodgers and Rudolph is a lock.
2. It's Howard's job to lose because they want a development QB who can also get the job done as a backup.

The slight problem with scenario 2 is if/when Rodgers struggles for a stretch games, basically looking his age, fans will get restless and want to see Howard out there. I know that type of thing shouldn't dictate a roster decision, but there are cases when it does.

Rodgers is playing the whole season unless he is injured. Howard starting as a rookie would get creamed......end of story especially in the back.half of the season where the schedule is brutal. He ain't gonna give you squat. Rudy might be able to lose close ones......so what......still a loss. They are hitched to Aaron for the year......anyone else and you are getting nothing. Howard is not Tom Brady in the 6th on a SB ready squad. By the way where are people getting Howard hope from anyway for God's sake? Because of some analyst like Gruden, or because he won a national.champuonship at OSU? Tebow won 2 national champuonships too. So what......this is the NFL.......Howard is a late pick which has a 1% chance of being a franchise QB

I think he'll have to play lights out to reach $20 million. He's not starting over Heyward and Harmon, unless they play him at NT again. Even so, I don't think they'll be in the base package too much. Again, I look at the Travis Jones contract as the comp. Maybe 3 years, $14.5 million per year with $15-20 million guaranteed. At some point Heyward isn't going to return. Then again, they may let him walk and focus those cap dollars on signing some of their young OL that will be due for contract extensions.

But I think Porter and Herbig are significantly better players.
Way better. Porter has several areas where statistically he is elite. Herbig has demonstrated elite pass rushing ability and has produced in limited reps. Benton is too inconsistent and is an average starter and should get average starter money--which I'd be fine giving him.

I expect Day to be in that role. He's a pretty good run stopper.

You're correct, but that isn't going to stop fans from wanting Howard to start if Rodgers has a bad 3-week stretch. You know the reporters and talk radio will eat that up and then it's a matter of how well the team handles the talk. Absolutely no one will call for Rudolph even if Rodgers looks like Kenny Pickett.

Isn't he ****** vs. Run? Or am I dreaming that?
Until we see these guys in the new system It is hard to say. They were playing him out of position imho. 25 mil may be cheap after he plays in the new system. I don't see Watts contract being the issue many on here seem to think. They will restructure when needed and the cap will continue to expand at a good rate. Watt will rebound this year with a defense that actually is schemed to disguise what they are doing, play to our strengths and their weaknesses and put people in positions to make plays rather than trying to simply outplay them on talent alone.

I hear what you are saying.....SB BOUND!!!!!

He’ll likely be like Hargrave (who they frequently put in the wrong spot)

He’ll go elsewhere
Get paid elsewhere
Be used properly elsewhere

And we’ll all look back and say man Tomlin really did find a way to get the least possible out of him… after he plays his way out of the Steelers price range in a pro system this year.
This is where I stand on Benton, if they wait and see how he produces this season, it could be too late. He weighs what, 310 or something around there and he’s at nose. This never made sense, people complain he’s deficient against the run especially when he’s doubled. There are so many schemes available to the offensive line that gives them an immediate angle of leverage against the nose. Benton is not built as an immovable object. Moving out decreases the players available to double and the angle advantage which forces OT’s to use good technique as well as strength instead of just brute force.

I really believe he’s gonna flourish if they rotate him with Heyward and Harmon not to mention the inevitable injuries that will force either or both of the starters to miss games. It’s like Herbig with Watt and Highsmith. Benton hasn’t distinguished himself like Herbig but they didn’t play Herbig at inside linebacker like some suggested in the media and so called draft experts. I mentioned possibly trying Herbig at inside after he was drafted, on the other hand I never expected them to move Benton to nose tackle.

I’m not advocating 25 million a year, like B&G noted, if that number is truly what his agent suggested, it’s negotiation time. Queen and probably Ramsey are coming off the books next year, Heyward more than likely has one year after this and could be gone sooner. Day is not young and not signed to a long contract. There’s money and one of our OLBs will more than likely be gone after 2026. With no immediate timeline for that big QB contract, there will be plenty to take care of the young offensive line.

Ty so around 20m a year
18th highest paid IDL. While I've seen a few say overpay, a majority of the Packers fans are reacting very positively to this deal. Similar profile to Benton in terms of a better pass rusher than run defender. Benton is probably the better pure pass rusher, younger, and has played in more games.

From the outside and spending about 5 minutes looking up info on Wyatt, eh, I would think it's an overpay. However, it basically puts Carter's analysis as spot on. If Wyatt is getting $19 million, Benton with another solid year is certain to get $20-25 million. He'll be gone and hopefully we get a good comp pick.

Or sign him to an extension this year. 20 mil per

Listen I ain't calling for Howard to start if Rodgers struggles. Let the dumb dumbs call. The rest of us half intelligent beings will just laugh

Benton is a quick gapper. Which will always be dangerous vs pass. But when I see a guy get hooked and turned like that. Its not scheme dependant.
Yes and no, the center and guard are constantly changing assignments at the line of scrimmage depending on the offensive play call and the defensive lineman’s location, even a shift by that lineman at the last second can determine who has the advantage and their ultimate responsibility. I agree he can get moved by one person but not having the mass that a Hampton, Wilford, etc is a distinct liability at NT and he should have been assigned to a position where he can play in or at least have more space.

That's about $5 million more per year than I would sign him. Just because the Packers paid an average starter top-20 salary doesn't mean the Steelers should. The only way I'd consider going that high is if I knew this was Heyward's last year and would be coming off the books. At least you'd be paying $20 million for a starter rather than a rotational IDL.

The Steelers may be in a tough spot with Frazier given that stupid contract the Raiders gave Linderbaum. They paid him $11 million per year more than Humphrey.
