kenny PICKett

So judging from the hot mess that is social media, people are divided into like eight or nine different groups when it comes to Pickett… its the weirdest thing

1. Pickett Diehards.. mostly Pitt fans and over enthusiastic Steelers fans. To these people he can do no wrong and is absolutely the answer.

2. The hopeful fan… Casual fans and some Steelers hardcore fans positively giving him a real shot, hoping for the best but not expecting anything for certain…( probably the largest group)

3. The Cynical fan. Kind of the opposite of the hopeful one… thinking the worse but giving him a fair shot
4 the neutral/ no opinion yet fan.. which is what it sounds like
5. Football Fans who hate the Steelers … mostly division and traditional rival team fans who want to see Pickett fail because they Hate the Steelers or are jealous of them ( can’t blame em… I personally love it when divisional rivals qbs are hot messes)
6. Non football fans who hate the Steelers.. this is a weird group, mostly irrational pirate fans but some people who just hate sports through and through who just want Steelers fans to be miserable and thus really want Pickett to fail.

7. Pickett pedigree Haters. These people dont like the guy either because he went to the wrong college or was in the wrong conference or they just wanted a different QB.. id say almost half of my friends who went to Penn state or WVU have been ******** on him since we drafted him… I don’t understand this mentality at all.. a guy from work who is an SEC fanatic wanted us to get that Bama kid next year, so he hates Pickett.. just a weird thought process if you ask me..

8. Tomlin and Canada haters who are so desperate to see them fail that they are hyperactively rooting for him to Bust

9. Draft geeks pissed we didn’t take their guy in the first… another rather immature point of view if you ask me…

I’m also on board with #2 and think he can be special.
I’m just sitting back this season with no expectations of playoffs or even a winning season, but watching Kenny improve and build rapport with this offense.
I like all the intangibles he brings to the table. A command of the offense, leadership, maturity, attitude, quick to process, field vision, swagger, and most importantly, always wanting to get better. Can’t teach any of that.

I'm hopeful, though if I had a nickel for every great college QB who flamed out in the NFL I'd be rich. All I know is Trubisky ain't it, and the best way to "develop" a QB seems to be let him play. Maybe we won't go anywhere this season but if nothing else he'll come in more experienced next year.

10. All the self-proclaimed experts who were so sure that he'd never amount to anything, because, by God, it took him until his senior year at the age of 23 to put a phenomenal season together.

They're still out there, just a lot quieter now.

I mean I was skeptical when he first started playing insanely well last season for that very reason … but he has shown enough that I think he was a very good pick at where we got him… i was very worried that he was going to be slated to be drafted real high and we would trade up to get him and spend a fortune doing so… but he fell and so far he looks more promising than I thought… I figured he was going to be a starter though… among all those qbs drafted this year he had a reasonable amount of all the attributes you want and the added value of already working with a nfl caliber qb coach for several seasons…

I can definitely be wrong and admit as much lol… it isn’t hard or painful…

8.5 Tomlin and Canada haters who are so desperate to see the Steelers successful that they are passionate in their viewpoint that both must go because it’s quite obvious they suck based on past performance and it’s getting worse not better

I’m generally in category “2”
But can’t shake 8.5 either

Here's the thing, when Ben Roethlisberger started, the coach was intelligent enough to know he needed to limit his throws and depend on a dominant running game.

That coach understood the young QB needed a strong running game, so they focused on having a strong running game.

Our coach now, he's an idiot. He's going to throw 35 to 60 times a game. They're NOT going to run the ball because they don't WORK on it. It's just not that big a deal and regardless of his talent, Kenny is going to at best be mediocre. I mean, unless he's an absolute m************ Hall of famer, he's going to be mediocre because the coach won't give him a fighting chance to succeed.

Big ben's coach believed in drafting offensive linemen. But to be fair, this is a pass happy league compared to the early 2000's. Defenses have gotten smaller and faster, I'd love to see a team go big on offense and ground and pound again.

It still all starts at the line of scrimmage. You absolutely still need big men in the trenches to maintain and hopefully push the other line. Sure, on D you can have a big-ish speed guy like Watt to get around the corner but you still need your big uglies in the middle to collapse the pocket for the QB and/or make the RB go around you. RB's run right through our line and have for years now. I have never seen a team give up so many 1st downs running on 3rd and long. We need to have 3 DL in the game at all times. I don't give a crap about sub-packages. If you cannot win in the trenches, you lose.

I'm thinking that KP8 can be pretty good, and probably do better than that. Give him a line and a realistic run game and he will be excellent.

You’re so old you were born before paragraphs were invented.

That would also make him old enough to tell you to kiss his ***. Don’t be so critical of others because one day you may find a critique you happen to possess, heaven forbid ! (Sorry if you’re offended)

On a brighter note I for one love reading of the good O’l days and best from first hand experiences.

I am in the camp that say despite what I thought before he was drafted, I am 100% a Pickett fan. He must do extremely well because he is our future.

Kind the Titans of the last couple years. 50/50 or close to balance is what championship teams have been made of. The dominant run will work but also need a passing game to go with it. 60/40 would work but we need a dominant QB who can get very good efficiency out of fewer passes, you know......... a rookie Ben.

Pretty complete list Mad, but I content none of them matter.

Doesn't matter what school KP went to, the conference he played in, how young or old he is, how big his hands are or whether he wears two gloves.

He's now the starting QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers and will face a brutal 4 game stretch with essentially no running game to support him. If he manages to win one of those 4 games I would see it as a success, and better things to come. Anyone not pulling for him isn't a Stiller fan. I guess than puts me at about 1.5

I was thinking of starting a new thread, but there are too many already.

So, why does our run game suck, and what would improve it?

1. OL can't open a hole, because they're being pushed into the backfield?
2. Play calling/coaching?
3. Najee isn't all that?
4. Opposing D's knowing we'll never throw slants or anything longer than 4 yards, so they stack the box?

No question #2 is first and foremost.

Until a more NFL offensive scheme is acquired there will be no run game to speak of. Add in we need big investment in the trench-warfare personnel as well.

Hadn't really put any thought in to this until I read this. Then it dawned on me. While I want Pickett to do well I realize now this comes with at a price. If Pickett is a true franchise QB (hopefully he is) then we just guaranteed Tomlin here until "HE" decides to retire. Man that's a hard pill to swallow.

The small sample size last game showed a commitment to the run when he came in. And they were successful so obviously we will abandon that, but hopefully not.

I think that is the case anyway so might as well cheer for Kenny to be the guy.

Tomlin is probably closer to the end here than many think… coaches get burnout and the dude can pick his choice of media roles when he decides to leave.. frankly if he wins another Super Bowl, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends it there.. but even if not, the grind will get to him soon
