Report: Steelers will have new look on D

My guess is the alleged "defensive guru" we hired as HC wanted to change some things we do on defense 'while' LeBeau still hung his name on it. In the old school world...that ain't gonna happen.

Dick would rather resign than allow a guy who has exactly ONE year coaching a defense ON ANY LEVEL (college or pro) put his sophomore fingerprints on his 33+ years of being a DC.

I wouldn't allow it either. If Butler will, he probably gets the job.

You might want to go over to the "Paper That Shall Not Be Named". Tomlin already started putting his finger in the pie "after" DL's defense was getting the **** tore out of it at the beginning of the season. And "lo and behold" the defense got "better" (definitely not great) after he did so. All this 'while' Lebeau still hung his name on it.

So maybe DL got pissed about that. He sure as hell couldn't "do" anything about it other than resign because the alternative was raising a fuss and getting fired by his boss; the Head Coach. Maybe Tomlin told him it wasn't going to change back to the old way and DL decided to walk. There's a lot of maybe's to this and as someone said, we won't ever know for sure. What we do know is that DL's defense was turning to crap 'while' he still hung his name on it. Whether that was due to talent, the scheme needing tweaked or a combination of both is open to debate.

My personal opinion is LeBeau made it known he wanted certain players in the drafts, and he was ignored.

We need to quit with all these assumptions of what took place and how...we dont know. But what we can all agree on was that some sort of change was needed on defense...had we had a top 10 defense, even with an ailing LeVeon, we'd still be playing a game next week in New England.

This "i think....what probably happened was....he didnt see eye to eye, ...he wasnt gonna stand for...." bullshit is chick soap opera nonsense. And folks are gonna spin it to fit their agenda or narrative. Why should we even give a **** the reason Dick quit or was fired ?...many other owners/head coaches wouldve done the same thing.....the product on that side of the ball was a hindrance to what we were tryin to accomplish.

THis is NOT girls night out at Sarahs crotchet and tea party.

Quit? Its a message board, smartsky, people are gonna talk about what they wanna talk about. We are not members of the team, nor media; we are fans. whatever is said on this website is inconsequential to anything that happens

LOL. I say about time for DL to finally leave. Whether it was his own accord or was forced out I really don't care. If we have been drafting a different type of player(as many on here say) then this should of been done a long time ago. Why does everyone want to keep a coach who is not getting the right personnel to run his scheme? This was not LeBeau's team. It was a tomlin/colbert team. if they chose to draft a certain type of player and it didn't fit LeBeau's scheme for the last 8 yrs I'm quite honestly surprised it took this long for LeBeau to leave. he should of tried to adapt his scheme to his players strengths or simply left.
My only question is if Butler takes over does he understand that he doesn't have the right personnel group to run a DL scheme?Or will he try to mold this defense where it caters to the players strengths andskill set. Or will he continue to try the exact same thing that LeBeau has done while slowly losing the type of players needed to run an effective defense the way he likes to run it.
What is done is done. We have to look forward and hope we get the right guy to run our defense. Whether it's Butler or someone else.

^^^Pretty easy to say AFTER the guy whose PIE you have been "putting your fingers into" for the first time in 8 years leaves...wonder why? I think DL had seen the writing on the wall that Tomlin and his 1 year of experience as a DC wanted more input on his defense of which he is accountable for and said "thanks but no thanks".

I won't be pessimistic altogether about the prospect of our D looking better next year without DL but I cannot say Tomlin's 1 year at DC in which he tied for last against the pass has me inspired. What got him noticed was that while his defense sucked against the pass, he led the league in INTs. Only one year of evidence to evaluate why but we sure haven't had the ability to catch anything on defense in a while.

My personal opinion is Lebeau signed off on the draft picks....and wasn't ignored because he has like 56 years of experience, Why would an ownership keep a HC and GM that ignores there DC on who he thinks he can work with in the scheme he runs? It just might be the case as you see it but then it also speaks volumes about our ownership also.

Maybe they didn't get Tomlin the right personnel that he needed to run his scheme correctly. Who knows. If he had the players Dick had maybe his defense would of been #1 against the pass that single year as DC.

Did you even read the article?

You are so full of ****. Please,, just stfu.

When someone has such an unintelligent thought, one must consider not saying anything to begin with. Better to stay quiet and be assumed the fool instead of opening your mouth and removing all doubt. Do you have anything intelligent EVER to say, ever?

I just got the feeling that the Steelers wanted to move forward with Butler... as for the article, it was absolute nothing... unless you think the concept that the D "may" change under a new DC is actually some sort of scoop. Here is a scoop too, it "May" not change either...

Perhaps it's as much a case of Lebeau's defense being figured out as much as it is personnel. The history of the league is full of new schemes that set the league on fire, but are soon figured out, and become much less effective. NE figured it out years ago, and rarely had trouble moving the ball against the Steelers, even when the defense had better talent. With a strong offense that can win games, and as many as 5 defensive starters leaving, this is probably not a bad time to try to revamp the defense.

it's funny, the only team that seemed to figure his defense out consistantly, was the team busted for cheating.

I'll admit our defense had gone downhill recently. It had gotten "weak" and the 10-yard cushions by the CBs were frustrating...especially on short yardage situations.
Love LeBeau and all the did, and when we were ranked #1 for so long, the only way to go is down as players age, leave, etc.
that said, I'm absolutely sure LeBeau got all he could out of the players he was given.

and, anyone who takes a shot at LeBeau (looking at your sorry ***, "POP") is a ******* piece of ****.

The whole NFL runs some zone blitz stuff so its certainly not the surprise it used to be, but most of the time we are in the right play call. it really is a matter of less talented players these days. Lebeaus schemes have always been predicated on heavy hitting over the middle, which is neutered in this NFL, and on qbs making at least one drive killing mistake under pressure, which with the middle of the field open, and with way more film work these days, isn't as sure a thing. Being a step slow at most positions means less of a chance to make the big play we needed. I mean when hitting went out we needed to revamp to speed and skill in the secondary to make plays, yet the team had zero CBs taken in the top 3 rounds on it.....

Really ? Everytime a great QB faced us the last few years he shredded us,Brees, Brady, Manning ,Rodgers and Luck among others.
Yeah, we are the only teams those guys shredded.

I think it was time for Dick L. to move on / retire. We NEEDED a change and this is it. Heaven forbid if Butler comes in and picks up where Dick L. left off. Now if KB is willing ti take the direction the HC may be a pushing, then ok (i'm opposed to keeping butler). Take note, ALL the respect to Dick L., but it was his time to split, regardless of how it occured.

Salute the nation

I'm not saying it wasn't time to move on for him, but the people that try to put down what he did since he was here because the past couple years weren't that good are idiots

which defenses do those guys NOT shred?

Well, this year, for Brady the Chiefs and one game each against the Phins and Jets. For Manning, the Colts and Bungles. For Rodgers, Seattle and the Bills. For Luck, the Pats and Cowboys. And for Brees, a lot of teams.

This team doesn't have the horses to run any defense.A pack of girls scouts could pass on our secondary. They suck ***. I have to agree on it being a dick move to harp on Dick. These same clowns I'm sure cheered when Terry Bradshaw got hurt as well at the tail end of his career. So far the only thing Tomlin has brought to the Steelers is how to turn a smash mouth team into a bunch of non tackling cream puffs.
