Steelers cut Avery, Oladokun

Oladokun was a wasted 7th round pick, where the Steelers passed on CB Jaylen Samuels and OT Rasheed Walker, two players who may wind up contributing. Oladokun was never going to contribute. He could have been signed as an UDFA.
 
Oladokun is the only draft pick ever to not play a single snap in preseason when on the roster and healthy.
 
Tomlin, so comfortable in his position as head coach, feels comfortable throwing away draft picks.
 
Does it really matter that they got cut this week ahead of the larger 27 person cut down next week?
 
We could have signed Oladokun as an undrafted free agent. Not that a seventh round pick has a great chance to make the 53 but you never know. Oladokun had zero chance and not even taking a snap this summer. Geez!

If the Steelers actually needed the guy, or even liked him as a possible roster addition, okay. But with Trubisky, Rudolph and Pickett, Oladokun was a complete waste. He had zero chance of making the roster absent some horrific series of injuries. Steelers could have signed him after the draft and used the 7th round pick on a guy who might make the roster and might, just maybe, be a productive player. I cited two examples.

The fact several of the previous picks were good does not change those facts.
 
Meh the seventh round qb prospect who made it to udfa status that I was hyping got cut like two or three weeks back to bring in a db in Washington..

Seventh rounders only make an nfl roster in any way shape or form 30% of the time the year they are drafted… their actual bust rate is extremely high.. I wouldn’t read to much into it, especially if he ends up on the practice squad
 
Maybe the plan all the time was to get him on the practice squad. Don't give him too much exposure to other teams. He was never in the mix to be the starter, obviously, so taking snaps away from the 3 who are seems counter productive. But depending on what happens this year...especially if Pickett ends up the starter, after the season Trubisky and Rudolph will be gone. You'll need QBs. We'll see.

I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that Rudolph ends up being traded and Oladokun ends up the 3rd QB.

I did, though i am thrilled that he wont be… i fall into the old Steelers mentality, if you can get good production out of a younger, cheaper player you do it, especially when it’s between a journeyman and a guy with potential.

I think Scott and Rashed both have upside and both net you 300k over Avery… this was a good move, though I wish Avery well

It might if you are looking to the future with the pick. Again, if Pickett ends up starting at some point this year, I would argue Trubisky is gone, and Rudolph is gone regardless. You need some QBs if that scenario occurs. Now if he doesn't get to the practice squad for some reason, I fully agree it made no sense.

I mean in a worse case it was injury insurance. Its a seventh round pick… sure some pan out, but they are few and far between… its the place to gamble on guys who probably aren’t going to make it, but if they do its an extremely valuable get… like a udfa you can control…

Plus our other seventh looks like a home run, or at least a triple lol… you can’t really expect two seventh rounders to make the 53 man roster lol

Wanted him so bad that he barely got any snaps in camp and none in the preseason. It was a wasted pick as I find very little value in trying to draft backup quarterbacks. Rudolph is the only good backup they've draft over the years. Otherwise, veteran backups such as Batch and Leftwich have been the way to go. I think part of it is people think teams will strike gold with a mid-round or late-round quarterback and be able to trade them for a first-round pick. That just doesn't happen.

little exposure to be able to stash him in PS? I don't know, just trying to make sense out of it. His mobility helps the scout team when facing the ravens and others

Well in a way.. it means they intend to play the three qbs they have Sunday… and that we will know if he cleared waivers or not by the bigger cutdown

I think so too, otherwise they need to keep "rudy" due to posible injury.
