"Under the current CBA proposal that NFL owners are pushing for, the playoff field would be expanded to seven teams from each conference, while the regular season would be increased to 17 games per team and the preseason shortened to three games per team, sources said.

As part of the proposed new playoff format, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye as opposed to the two that currently do, league sources said. That would mean a revised postseason schedule that includes six games on wild-card weekend, with three on Saturday and three on Sunday.

The changes to the NFL's playoff format would take effect for the 2020 season, assuming the new CBA is ratified beforehand. Had the proposed format been in place this past season, the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers would have been the next teams included in the playoff field."

NFL is so damn greedy. Messing with things that work like 16 game seasons and 6 team playoff tournaments in each conference all for that extra game of revenue. What a mess

I see both sides. Players are going to reach 40 mill a year soon. the salary cap grows yearly. and they have a product that could stretch to a 17 18 19 20 game season and fans would want more.

They just want a third playoff window for both Saturday and Sunday. The NFL has the best playoff system and all they are doing it is watering things down. Of course I'm going to watch, but that doesn't mean I like it.

I hope that cutting back to 2 preseason games is part of the deal, but of course, it won’t be.

With them caring so much about injuries, it isn't like expanding the games would carry any extra risks whatsoever.

:bump2:

Boooooo. I don’t want the NBA where everyone gets the **** in. **** the money grab.

Article says current version of the proposed CBA would reduce preseason to 3 games and add another regular season game.

At least having an odd number of regular season games means Cool Shades can't have an 8-8 "non losing season" anymore.

Tend to lean this way and I asked myself Would the Steelers deserve to be in the playoffs last season as the #7 seed? Couldn't help but answer no.

If you had read the post, they are cutting back to three.

8-8-1

as another said, I would have hoped to pull back preseason to 2 games, but that may still be. There is a good chance the NFL expects to concede that...you have to have bargaining chips and you never open with BAFO. That is basic negotiation.

THis will, of course, be seen as greed by the NFL. It is, of course, about money. Basic business requires revenue to grow else you will flounder and fail. As others point out, player salaries go up each year. So does the cost of the entire business which includes rent in NY for the corp office, dumbo Raj's millions, benefits, travel, etc, etc. The NFL must grow its revenue stream like every other business out there. Basic business principal.

making the season longer means the possibility of more meaningless games with teams clinching earlier. That's why that are only having 1 team with a bye, to keep teams playing hard to the end.

If the NFL wants 18 games, they should get rid of individual BYE weeks. Split the season into two 9 week halves and have a 2 or even 3 week break in between. Take off Christmas and New Year's week. This allows everybody to get healed up. It would also push the Super Bowl into March which will bring more cold weather cities into play for hosting the Super Bowl.

If they cut back pre-season games, which I am guessing they will, camp and other offseason training should ramp up but won't. Teams will start the regular season still needing a game or two or three just to get going like they do in college. With only 2 preseason games, would someone like Ben even sniff the field? My guess is he wouldn't and he would be rusty as hell for a couple games to start the season.

Somehow missed that. Thanks DIC. Still hoping for two.

I hear yaz and YES, two pre-season would be plenty because teams have moved away from what PRE-season games were meant to do. It use to be a tune up process for the entire team. NOW it's just a chance for the lower team to show & possibly make the team. OUR starters take 2-4 weeks (especialy under tomlin rule) to get into football timing / shape. I'm for shortening preseason and extending regular season BUT also think the roster should be full participation as well as making practice squad players (2) get a hat as well but still held to practice squad status. ANY playing time of practice-players does NOT accrue towards full time player statis.

THIS! If you are gong to add to the regular season, you need to expand the rosters.

Of course, none of this will matter on the Steelers as Tomlin always goes and stays with his guys ALL game! He doesn't know how to rotate guys in to keep them fresh for the 4th qtr. push!

Just curious how they will determine the opponents?
Right now it's easy, we know what teams we'll play 2 years from now, except two of the teams.
6 vs your division
4 vs an NFC division
4 vs an AFC division
2 vs the same place finish within their division as you in the AFC.
