If Tomlin fizzles out and doesn't win another Super Bowl then he won't make the Hall. If that happened, then it would be damn hard to ignore how he won early with his inherited team and then was mostly average after that. All despite having a hall of fame QB for most of the time.

Cowher gets credit because football people know how much he got the steelers to overachieve prior to Ben. Nearly beating a dynasty Cowboy team with Neil O'Donnell. Nearly getting to the SB with Kordell. Winning with Tommy Maddox.

Also, it must have been taken into account that Cowher retired early due to his wife's illness. So while he may only have 1 SB win, it's safe to assume he would have won at least 1 more with Ben. I personally think he may have ended up with 3 or 4 SB wins if life hadn't intervened.

The thing is Cowher was always a borderline guy who had several big checkmarks in his box.
A. He had a really good record
B. He won a super bowl.
C. Lots of playoff appearances
All of these Tomlin matches up favorably with

But he also went to 6 afccg, tomlin is at 3,
Had 12 playoff wins, tomlin is at 8
Had a memorable on field personality
And had long term national exposure on CBS after he retired

The other thing is he gets credit for developing the blitzburg defense with lebeau and lewis... those schemes fundamentally changed the game...

Tomlin has the “never had a losing season” thing, but he also has The caveat that after 2010 he basically has an abysmal playoff record... Outside of his first two seasons, Cowher never had a playoff appearance without at least one win...

Tomlins one thing he has going for him is that the press loves him because he treats them well.. Cowher more or less had to rehabilitate his gruff image with them for years ...

I just know a lot of non Steelers fans are critical of Tomlins recent playoff performances... i think for him to get in he needs one more deep run in the playoffs... otherwise the “won with cowher’s players narrative is going to win out...

“And had long term national exposure on CBS after he retired”

Is a huge plus for borderline candidates. Kurt Warner is a prime example.

Tomlin is a HOFer today.

And quit giving me the ho hum Tomlin didn't have a quarterback. Both O'Donnell and Kordell were pro bowlers.

Perception is reality and outside of a pretty large segment of the Steelers fan base, the perception is hugely favorable. So yes he will undoubtedly be in the HOF. That said, I do not think he will lead this team to another SB and therefore the team should move in a different direction post Ben.

Cowher, well deserved. Congratulations Coach Cowher.
Tomlin on the other hand is not a bad coach but more of a very average one that the media likes to inflate. This football team will not win a SB with Tomlin which I’ve said I the past here.
So those that are content with non losing seasons and that’s enough, Tomlin is your man.

VERY VERY well deserved.! Currently 1 of two of my very favorite STEELERS coaches, Tomlin could very well work his way in if ........

Salute the nation

Tomlin needs 4 more playoff wins in the next 2 years to match Cowher, in the same time period.

Yes, playoff wins matter. The fact that Cowher has promoted the NFL as an analyst all these years hasn't hurt either.

I'm not ready to induct MT just yet, his arrow will have to point higher, and soon.

Neither was close to Ben. Cowher won with average to bad qbs in the playoffs.

He has won more playoff games and has a much better winning percentage.

Compare the two’s winning percentage with Ben if you dare

Thats all good and fine, but again, if he gets to double digit playoff wins he is very very favorable to the other probable hof coaches of this era... the only thing that might hold him back is continued playoff failure... but he is no shottenhiemer there or anything

Just because Tomlin gets into the HOF doesn't mean he deserves it. He's done less with more than almost any other coach in the league. He's had everything handed to him. He's had a SB winning HOF QB his entire career. He hasn't had to worry about free agency taking away his best players. He hasn't had to deal with re-building and plugging holes every year. He won almost all of his playoff games with teams loaded with Cowher's players. The staff Cowher left was elite as well with a HOF DC in Lebeau. As the Cowher's players left the playoff winning left. He's not a HOF but he'll probably get in. Winning only 3 playoff games (all against backup QBs) in 10 years with a HOF QB should disqualify you from the HOF. But I know it won't.

He's got a shot but Cowher is always gonna be my dude.

"So while Cowher certainly deserves his Hall of Fame bid, so will Tomlin when that time comes -- though you wouldn't know it from the screaming for his head that goes on in Steelers Nation."

I don't know that there's much "screaming for his head" going on...although many of us were certainly disappointed that the trade rumors involving the Redskins turned out to be baseless. Personally, I would have really liked to have seen what the Steelers could have accomplished with a breath of fresh air coming in, along with a couple of high draft picks to help Ben in his final few seasons.

But, hey, there's always the hope that Tomlin can equal Cowher in the win department with two more non-losing seasons.

I think if Tomlin wins one more SB he gets in.
I’m not a Tomlin fan, but it seems outside of Pittsburgh he is thought highly of

Love Tomlin and will be estatic if and when he gets into the HOF. It seems that's all we do, is employ HOF head coaches connected by decades on end. It's a beautiful thing. So proud of Coach Cowher for this great accomplishment.

Dial 8 to get out and then dial 8 again...….

Non losing season my ***.

I mean look at andy reid... that guy supplants shottenheimer as the best coach not to make the hall if he never wins a super bowl... coached for 20 years, made the playoffs 14 times, won a playoff game in nine different seasons only had five non winning seasons and has masterminded some of the best offenses in nfl history... one super bowl loss to show for it

Not to mention Cowher got ******* cheated by the gd pa*ts* in our games. His superbowl record could very well have another win or two if not for those *****.

People forget the Broncos circumventing the Salary Cap cheating in 1997 as well

Tomlin has gone 11years with no hardware. And any hardware he got was with the nucleus of Cowhers super bowl team of 2005. Now he’s not winning 10 games a season anymore and he’s not making the playoffs.. yeah, that’s HOF worthy.
