The Steelers will pick up the fifth-year option on linebacker T.J. Watt this offseason. But that will be just the tip of the iceberg in his long-term cost.

No doubt. Watt will get a 20+ million per year offer from the Steelers and it might be this offseason.

Would be smart to get the team MVP signed to a long term contract. This should be a high priority along with resigning Dupree. You can do the Steelers usual big signing bonus and backload the contract so that the hit is less this year. So both sides are happy and in the process more money is freed up. No need to wait with TJ as you know motivation will never slack.

Wonder how many 1st round picks we could get for him?

I'm just curious as to where we get the cap space for both Dupree and Watt. Not saying they can't, and I know Ben will be off the books in a couple of years...

I would trade watt for no less than 3 first round picks

JOKING or not, I'm not joking when I say this

THANK GOD NEITHER OF YOU TWO ARE IN ANY WAY, MAKING DECISIONS FOR THIS BELOVED STEELERS TEAM.!

SALUTE THE NATION

Am I not reading that correctly? It says they will pick up his 5th year option this offseason, Watt has only been in the NFL for 3 seasons, not 4. They'll sign him long term after the 2020 season before his 5th year. This is why I've been saying they can't afford to sign Bud long term, because we have Watt in 2020, Cam and JuJu this offseason, then Minkah after the 2021 season. Watt and Minkah are going to be among the highest paid at their position, we're paying Tuitt a ton, and Cam is playing at a high level, how can you not give Cam more than we're giving Tuitt?

They'll pick up his 5th year option and then start negotiating with him for a long term deal. I seriously doubt they will wait until after his 4th year to try and lock him up long term. His price is only going to go up with a strike looming and a new CBA. I still doubt they get a long term deal with Bud done. I think they may tag him this year and then that will probably be it for him in a Steelers uniform.

He will be the highest paid Steeler ever when he gets his contract. Yinzers will be asking for the home town discount. Brace yourself for a $100M+ contract. It will make Mack money look cheap.

They usually wait to sign guys when they have 1 year deal left of their contract to sign them. Heyward signed him big deal when he had 1 year left on his rookie deal, JuJu has one season left, so he'll be signed this offseason. Hell they waited until Ben had one year left on his rookie deal before signing him.
It would be dumb to sign Watt to big money now, when you have him for another year on the cheap.

Has any player at the height of their value ever really given the "home town discount"? If he (or anyone) can get QB money, more power to them. I'd like Hargrave to stay, but I understand he needs to go get his maximum amount of money wherever that may be.

Pay market value and get it done. If there was ever a HIGH REWARD and LOW RISK signing its gotta be TJ Watt.

Maybe some have but off the top of my head I can't think of them. The comment I made was more toward the people around here who clamor for someone to be underpaid for their job. We need to pay people who do exceptional things their market value.

I wasn't challenging you on that, just asking in the general sense. I don't think it's something that really ever happens. Example being TJ. He's not from here, sure he may like being here with these teammates and playing for these coaches and org, but no way would he ever take less than top dollar to stay.

I know that some players have taken less than top dollar to help franchises keep teams together. This is usually something you see on a 3rd contract and not the 2nd. The 2nd contract is where these guys get paid and are set for life financially. TJ isn't going to get another massive UFA deal after this one.

With the amount of money in football each year. it would be foolish for players to take less than top dollar. We see record breaking contracts for players each year now and its why someone like AB who was the highest paid and then wasn't let his ego get the best of him about the money. Instead of being happy for others and accepting what he had, he got greedy and got himself run out of the league. That's an extreme case but its definitely not alone in situations where players can't handle that someone is getting paid more than they are.

Watt is worth the money Dupree is not.

Outside of Sidney Crosby, no. The Steelers routinely make players the highest paid at their position in the league.

Cam, as much as I love his play, is 30 with a history of injuries. He'll be 31 when the season starts. He'll get a contract, but it won't be one to break the bank.
Juju - with this season behind him - will also get a contract, but it will also not break the bank. He'll get paid competitively for what he's earned and this season will weigh heavily on that.

I wondered the same thing with Harrison and Woodley....but somehow we did it .
