Ben to IR, out for season

While I hope Mason does as well as he can, I suspect many folks don't fully understand just how good Ben Roethlisberger has been.

He's in the top 10 all time across most of the statistical categories. That's All Time. You don't just bring in a guy and say, "Dayum, NOW we're cookin'."

I'm expecting Tommy Maddox. He may look great for a few games, but eventually - he's a dude.

Not too fired up about the NFL these days. With Brown basically getting his way every ******* time he turns around, the cheats just continually making the league a 1-team show and now that Roethlisberger is out, there's really not too much to get excited about. At least before there was the hope that Roethlisberger could overcome the coaching staff's inadequacy and win some games. Now - They're going to ask Rudolph to make up for Mike ******* Tomlin's inability to coach?

Yaaaa...

Mike Tomlin just got a free pass on the season.

I see it the other way around. His free pass was Ben!

Steeler fans are not used to rooting for a mediocre or bad team.

Coaches mistakes are often masked when they win. When the lose their mistakes are magnified.

It might take a year to hit a boil but for the first time in forever the Steelers might let Tomlin go before the contract expires.

I recommend Steven Belichick in 2020. As I said before I don’t care if his father is Darth Vader.

It’s crazy to me that people are so vindictive that they are more pissed that everyone might not hate Tomlin more than they care that Ben’s career may be over. That’s a strange world to live in IMO.

I believe you are misreading and misunderstanding this issue 100%. Specifically, the Tomlin critics - me among them - have argued for years that Tomlin is a bad coach, does not get what he should out of his players, plays down to bad teams, loses games the team has no business losing to garbage teams, and that he is wasting the finite years of a great QB.

And now the **** has hit the fan, and we are stuck with Tomlin. Great players - Troy, Harrison, Smith, Faneca, Decastro, Ward, Brown, Miller, Ben, Holmes, etc. - covered his manifest weaknesses. The vast majority of those guys are gone, and Tomlin is still here. The playoff record over the past 9 seasons (3-6 in his last 9 playoff games) is not acceptable. Getting blistered by the Patriots in the 2016 playoffs is not acceptable. Losing to Tim Tebow in the playoffs is not acceptable.

The Steelers should have fixed this five years ago, when they had a load of talent, but failed to do so. Now we have a mediocre coach who thinks that a last-second field goal is the goal of every game.

Defense sucks ***. It doesn't matter who we plug in a qb at this point.

Loved the Rudolph pick when we made it even though we had Dobbs. I think he has tremendous potential and I hope I'm right because we floundered for over 2 decades after Bradshaw retired.

I just have this pit in my stomach, though. I hope Ben comes back and is better than before but that pit in my stomach is making tears form in my eyes as I have a sinking feeling he may never play again. He will be 38+ when he comes back. Is his will strong enough? Is his body capable of it? I guess we have a year to wait and see. Damn! Damn! Damn!

Go Rudolph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never. Not ******* EVER!

As for Ben I think he’ll retire and test the media waters.

The media has never gotten over Ben's early career issues. He's not a guy they'd welcome into the brotherhood.

Co signed. 100 percent.

I like Supe's coaching suggestion; Lincoln Riley BABY!

Ben inherited a team with a number one defense, a great OL, a HOF RB, and veteran WR. HUGE difference in what Mason is taking over.
I agree I just think comparing us to the Dolphins is a little bit of an overreaction

I'm in no way saying this will happen, but let's not forget a certain qb ran off 16 straight wins his rookie year

Sorry, Rudolph is no Ben. It took 20 years to find Ben after Bradshaw. You don’t find that next great QB this quick. Besides, this team doesn’t have that defense or the coaching.. no comparison at all.

I have a feeling he'll be back and go out on his own terms.

It is weird how time flies. Seems like just yesterday when he got his first chance and lit the league on fire. Unfortunately the rest of the team is pretty poor compared to back then.

Does anyone know if they have tried the mynha bird treatment yet? There might still be a chance..

For the first time in his career Ben will be out for the season, he's been hurt here and there throughout his career, but this is his first season ending injury if I'm remembering correctly. Sad to see this happen to Ben, hopefully he makes the best decision for himself and his family whether he returns or not, he's earned that decision. Treading into unknown waters, I believe in Rudolph though, more than any previous QB we've had behind Ben. Let's hope we got something in this kid

He should of been pulled immediately when he started grabbing his elbow. Look at the game thread. I said it then. Get Ben out of the game. Yet they continued to play him.

The same numbskull that ran the wheels off WP. Absolutely clueless. And every bit as clueless 10 years later. Stands there on the sideline for 13 years blinking his eyes with that idiot expression on his face. Clueless.

Don't worry. They'll "unleash hell in December" when they return to Foxboro to play "those @#$%ing @$$holes" on their way to the SB. "The standard is the standard". A truly impressive human being.

If it further damaged his elbow, there is absolutely no excuse, heads should roll.

The minority owners must be apoplectic over this. How does Arty not hand them his scalp? If not, sue the senior numbskull for malfeasance. This storied franchise upon which minority owners invested has become a degenerating crime scene over the junior numbskull's tenure. They just obligated the franchise to $100M (guaranteed?) and just left the franchises pivotal asset out there to waste. Is malfeasance too strong a word?

Anyway, Benjamin Todd Roethlisberger Sr., you're a true warrior. I hope you fully recover and go enjoy your beautiful family. Whatever the pile of cash you have coming, you deserve. And I hope it's the full $100M. You carried this team on your back. I can't think of a better franchise quarterback for this storied franchise. Godspeed.

When you lose a football game, you have plays you can discuss, things to justify or rationalize this or that. We just lost our franchise QB in week 2 and really don't get a chance to grieve this loss. There's a lot of testosterone on this board. Lots of chest thumpers, **** talkers and mixed in are some really great in depth conversations. We had the honor to watch Big Ben suit up for a long time. We knew with Ben in, we always had a chance to win a game. Now we go into an unknown, not even knowing whether Ben has played his last game or not. Its hard not to sit back and reflect on everything Ben has done for this franchise and allowed us fans to celebrate. Yes we all want to win a Super Bowl every year and we're doing this at the same time another franchise has won 6. Its been a grind for 15+ years. Those of us who remember this team before Ben also know what life was like then too. I hope Rudolph can perform and we aren't entering some long time search for the next franchise QB. Thank you can't quite mean enough to what Ben has allowed us to enjoy. I hope this isn't the end, but if it is we are going to have to get a best of Big Ben thread going with our favorite Ben memories. This is a super bitter pill to swallow. The 24 hour rule isn't going to apply here either.
