Best D in NFL history

agreed 76 steelers
85 bears
2000 rats
2002 bucs

Don't leave out the 2008 Steelers, they had the toughest schedule in the history of the NFL and also played at the beginning of the passing era. That 2000 Ravens defense was damn good, but go back and look at their schedule and QB's they faced, trash.

Booby said, "grasp" - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You're hands are full everyday - we know...

This coming from Bermuda-Dil(do), the guy who didn't know Marino ever went to a Super Bowl and couldn't understand the premise of Best D ever for one season.

You, of all people. Very sad.

And again how do we know it is for 1 season only?

The 2008 Pitt D was very good, but not as dominant as the very best. The 2000 Ravens could only play who was put on their schedule, and let's face it, it wasn't like they faced NO ONE along the way.

They started off the season dropping a donut on us, 16-0. (Yea, we had Kent Franken-Graham at QB.)

But along the way, they wasted Brunell and the Jags twice (who were coming off a 14-2 season and trip to the AFCC game).

They beat the AFC Champ. Titans and McNair.

They beat Troy Aikman and the Cowboys.

They beat up Jake Plummer and the Cards, who had a pretty good offense and passing game.

Then in the playoffs they destroyed Denver, TN and Oakland, before tearing the Giant into shreds in the Super Bowl.

I don't think their entire schedule was a cream puff. And like I said, they can only play who is on their schedule, both in season and postseason.

You won't ever hear Pitt 2008 D compared to the Ravens' 2000 D. Balt.'s DL, LBs AND secondary were ALL loaded.

can you reread opening thread? it mentions 80/90s giants and Eagles defense. that kinda makes it hard for us simple folk to grasp that it is evaluations on single seasons only.

Those were my words. The actual article only lists Ds by single seasons. I was the one who pondered the subject in a general time period manner. All their rankings only specified by single seasons only. See here.

you mention eagles and giants of 80s and 90s but dont expect people on a steeler message board to bring up the Steelers of the 70s.

Straw man argument. I never said no one could mention Steelers of 70's, but the ARTICLE itself (not my commentary) treats the subject only by single seasons.

Bermuda-dil(do), why do you think Marino never made it to the Super Bowl?

The Dolphins generally had an awful defense during his time there. Sounds kinda familiar.

Aikman could barely remember who he was by then.

Arizona had one of the worst ranked offenses and Plummer was horrible then
.
Jags were good no doubt, they scored 46 points in their two games vs Baltimore.

Tennessee was good, but they were one dimensional, McNair wasn't a good QB, pretty much Kordell clone, the year they made the super bowl he had like 56% completion% and a QB rating in the 70's.

Kerry Collins, Gus Ferrotte, Gannon was good. I didn't say their defense wasn't good, but they kind of got lucky, played Miami and Denver after Elway and Marino retired, played McNair before he resembled a good throwing QB, old Aikman, akili Smith and couch twice, Brad Johnson for Washington, Vinny for the Jets. They played all run first team because none of them could throw.

The 2008 Steelers defense was ranked #1 in yards against and points against.
2000 Ravens were not.

2008 Steelers defense gave up less yards per plays than the 2000 Ravens while facing McNabb, both Manning's, Rivers, Romo, Flacco twice.

2000 Ravens had 35 sacks
2008 Steelers had 51 sacks

Again that Ravens defense was one of the best single season defenses ever, but alot of people forget or don't even talk about that 2008 Steelers defense.

Basically you are saying what most already know. Ignore your commentary

You're hands are full everyday - we know...

This coming from the Doh who struggles with the basics of the English language. You of all people...

"You're" is a contraction for "you are."

"Your" indicates possession.

Hardly the same thing.

https://www.espressoenglish.net/difference-between-your-and-youre/

I wouldn't have bothered with this easy slam, but you came after me, as if it is I who wonders around aimlessly, without being cognitive.

You, of all people........

grammar nazis suck....

do we really need to start correcting all the mistakes you make?

Bermuda has been corrected in the other thread about Marino having played in the Super Bowl, don't bring it up in other threads or we shall bring up all your errors also....and there are plenty

as I said in my original post in this thread...**** a single year one time defense. The 70's Steelers are the best ever.....

Plus, the 70's didn't have free agency to deal with so it's not an apples to apples comparison if you consider a multi-year span.

Babe Ruth was never able to be a free agent.

Does that make him less great? Asking for a friend.

Apologies, Lady Bufford. My auto-correct is giving me fits. I humbly apologize for ruffling your grammatical feathers.

I'm concerned though...

Are your knees ok???

1976 Steelers. You know how a decent offense helps the defense, keeping them off the field, putting up points to force the opposition into pass-only? No such luck for much of the 1976 season, since the team had Mike Kruczek as QB for six full games and part of three others because Bradshaw was hurt. No matter. The defense gave up 6, 0, 0, 0 points in the first four games, and COMBINED yardage allowed (4 games, mind you) of 713 yards in those four contests.

Unfortunately, both Harris and Bleier were hurt in the playoff game against Baltimore. If those guys are available, the Steelers spank the Raiders and win their 3rd straight, and the 1976 defense is not deprived of a SB showing.

The '76 team was just blasted with injuries all over.

1991 Eagles

Statistics don't describe how dominant they were that year and how much they had to do when Cunningham went down with an injury. Of all the defense I WATCHED week-in, week-out, that was the best.

The 1976 Steelers defense had not one, not two, not three, not four but FIVE shout out wins. In two other games they only gave up 3 points, in another game just six.

No other NFL Defense could imagine doing this.

Case closed.

as far as individual seasons go, my top three in the post-merger NFL:

1. '76 Steelers
2. '85 Bears
3. '00 Ravens

That 08' STEELERS "D" has tom be in there right next to these.

Salute the nation

Marino hit the '85 Bears in the mouth, but they were an all time One Season Wonder. But the NFL pretty quickly figured out how to beat the vaunted 46 making it a footnote in schematic history.

In contrast, the NFL couldn't figure out how to slow the 70's Steelers D. They even changed the rules of the game. Eventually, only Father Time could best them.

It was bad ***. The front four, with Reggie, Clyde and Jerome. The LBs with Joyner and the secondary with Waters and Eric Allen....wow. The NFC wars during that time with Philly, NYG, Skins and Bears...brutal.
