Thoughts on Mason Rudolph?

Yes

A. Hard to tell considering he has never even dressed on game day.
B. Not a good sign when you cannot even beat out Josh Dobbs for back-up spot. Did you watch the Oakland game and all of the "momentum" that Josh had us doing.
C. From what I watched of his college career, I would venture to guess he will be somewhere in-between. But then again when you pick a career clipboard holder and one of the best QB's in the game it is kind of hard to say he will be like either. He is a lot closer to Landry at the moment,
D. So you are not sure whether he is more like Jones or Rodgers but you would take him in the first round...thank God you are not a GM.

you have a franchise QB playing at a high level and you'd be fine using a #1 pick on Rudolph??? No other team thought enough of him to use a 1, 2, or 3 on him. I hope we never get to see Rudolph play, that means Ben plays at a high level for awhile.
I think it was a dumb pick to be honest.

And Edmonds was rated a 3rd rounder as well. The time to find Ben's replacement is here. I do not want to go through the 80s/90s again. I'm sure Ben will miss a few games this year and we will get to see a glimpse of the future.

We needed a safety, and he was ranked higher depending on who you read, but we had no need for a QB and we are a team that's close to being a Super Bowl contender, we could've used that pick on another position.
Difference between 80/90's is that Bradshaw wasn't playing that well his last few years, Ben is still at the top of his game and showing no signs of arm weakness, you try to win now while your franchise QB is playing so well.

The older Ben gets increases the odds he has some injuries, so having a competent back-up can get you to the playoffs. Rudolph's preseason will tell a lot about his
year of development.

Dobbs and Rudolph will compete to be the #2 qb. Whoever is #3 will get almost no work during the season. It's like a wasted year.

We'll know more about Rudolph during training camp and the coming pre-season. He was just a rookie last season being groomed running the scout team so you really can't gauge him at this point.

So draft a QB when Ben has 3 years left on his contract. The drafted QB will pretty much be out of his rookie contract before ever playing a down in the NFL, oh and by the way, let's pay him first round money to hold a clip board for 3+ years. The same guy that cannot even beat out Josh Dobbs his rookie year for a hat on game days.

We have two backups behind Ben that are young and mostly unproven. Nothing to report on Rudolph until he actually sees the field. I'd rather he not see the field until Ben is retired.

It's not our back up QBs I have a worry with but it's the coaching staff coaching the team, primarily the HC. He needs to step up his game in order for the rest to make a difference. This is a tell tale year for the coach.

Can't compare Rudolph to either Landry or Rogers until he gets a few games in.

Salute the nation

You are hoping for a solid starter that would be very successful with a surrounding cast and a good defense. Otherwise you will be spending a 1st in a year or two. We should start to see this preseason.

Roethlisberger is a bonafide "franchise QB". You don't land Franchise QBs back to back. The 80s and 90s be comin'... They be comin'...

I am with steelwright. Without a doubt is a yes

I thought Daniel Jones was a veritable clone of Rudolph...except Rudolph had a **** ton of experience compared to DJ.

Wasn't thrilled we used a pick on a QB last year but he will end up being our No. 2 and possibly take over when Ben retires in 3 years. It should be a good camp to watch he and Dobbs compete for the No. 2 spot. I'm honestly not ruling either QB out as far as taking over for Ben. Can either be a legit NFL starter? Maybe is about all I have right now.

I am undecided but liked what I saw of him in preseason. let us see what transpires this preseason before we stick a label on Rudolph.

Well, Montana to Young, Favre to Rogers, Manning to Luck, but yea, it's not the norm. It doesn't help when your franchise puts QB addition on such a low priority. Yea, Malone was a 1st rounder, but other than him, who did they really think was gonna be a franchise QB among Stoudt (5th round), Woodley (Miami cast off, 8th), Bubby (3), Blackledge, O'Donnell (4), Tomczak, Kordell....I mean, they did that cocky thing where they thought they were going to prove to the world that you don't need a high investment in a QB to succeed, meanwhile, all their rings came from a high 1st rounder (Bradshaw) and didn't win **** until they drafted another QB with a high 1st rounder.

I think the way they handled the QB position from 1980 - 2001 was really a mistake.

I like a confident QB, but being too cocky isn't a good thing. He comes off as smug and reminds me of ND QB Jimmy Clausen, who was already full of himself by the time he left high school. He never amounted to jack crap.

By the time he was done at ND his value already dropped to a 2nd round value (Carolina). He had previously been considered a top 10 pick and 1st overall QB to be drafted.

MR gives me the same vibe. Hope I'm wrong.

Following him in college as an Oklahoma State alum, I never got the sense of ego from him, he was a class act.

I've never seen anything from him in college to think he's gonna be anything more than an adequate/average starter, and that's his ceiling imo, cheering for him hard tho! But I think Ben plans to still be the starter when his rookie contract is up.

He needs to do himself a favor and work his butt off and emphatically beat out Dobbs early in camp and take every pre season snap Ben doesn't want this summer.

Every interview I've seen with Mason (and there were plenty last season) he seems to be humble, hungry and confident of his abilities.

Smug? Definitely not.
