colbert does what he does and signs a few guys in FA so we dont have a glaring hole going into the draft and draft process.
with the money paid to our new cb, he figures to be a lock as a starter this year and the next.
barrons contract looks like he is here for 2 years also.
moncriefs deal makes him a deal for year 2 or can be cut year 2, based on production
with that being said, what positions do you think we really need to have step up and start this year, if any.........

i see edge, ilb and cb being our 3 biggest needs................
can you envision any of those positions taking a starters job to start the year or by mid season?

With AB gone WR might be nipping at ILBers heels.

yeah, but the WR class is deep and I don't see them going that way unless the guy is clearly BPA on their board. IMO they are more likely to get a TE in the first than WR.

I don't know...Wide Receiver/TE should be on that list too IMO.

We lost one of the best pass catchers on the planet....This is why with no ILB available at 20, I would go Fant or Metcalf.

We need to retool this receiving corps....

Why Metcalf? I think Ben & he would just pick apart smaller & scrawnier DB's....And he can shed thise guys off once he catches the ball

I think we see WR somewhere between 2 and 4. But yeah BPA.

Actually with the three free agents they can almost go BPA across the board. With QB left out, but yeah.

I see a trade up in 1 or 2. They will get rid of a few picks in the process.

Should be a real competitive preseason filled with no drama. It will be a refreshing change.

Something for fans to be excited about.

Uh, no....Any little thing that goes wrong will get magnified. We are the Steelers

The way I see it, we have a 2-year window of getting back to the big game. That said, ANY draft pick that will be able to come in and start immediately will be the ONLY impact player(s) we could draft.

ILB - We have Barron and Bostic splitting time at ILB. Is there ANY draft pick that would be able to come in and be a starter over Barron? I don't see one. A "dynamic" versatile edge/inside performer like Winovich might see the field. A play maker like Long from WVU might also see some time. No draft pick will be able to assume the full-time responsibilities, IMO. We can get better over time by drafting a player who may eventually make the grade like Barton, Cashman, Hanson, Pratt or Summers but they are all "projections" at this point. Even the 2 Devin's will have trouble seeing the field because neither had a lot of production and both have trouble getting off college level blocking.

WR- We have a remaining core of only 1 proven commodity at WR. The others are "hopefuls". We can get a great WR in this draft in the top 3 rounds who "could" project as a starter.

TE - Given our best TE is injury prone, we only have "hopefuls" left on our roster. We NEED a pass-catching TE...we have adequate blocking TE's, IMO.

EDGE - We have again, 1 proven commodity who is an impact guy (Watt) but we need another, Dupree is "in" unless we find that other guy.

CB - We have our starters on the outside and have an outside/slot CB in Sutton. Could we upgrade? Sure, but it is not as critical as filling the holes we know we have above, IMO.

S- We have decent S play but need a coverage specialist to help out in short-zone and down the seam. There are a few in this draft that have decent cover/ball skills like Rapp, Savage and CGJ who might be able to get on the field.

The question then is, who could make an impact as a "sub" vs who could actually see the field as a starter, IMO.

we just need playmakers. Our defense has been schemed for a while to tackle after the catch, whether that be because of personnel or coaching, it has played that way for years. We need fast playmakers. The thing is, if we get a player at ILB who can make somewhat close to an impact as shadier. The rest will fall into place, we have seen that before it’s tragic end. It wasn’t perfect but it was a HUGE step better than where we are currently.

Um let's not forget right tackle.

Don’t read too much into some “experts” saying we desperately need Right tackle help. It’s truly not a big need. Gilbert was our “starter” and is now gone. But the last 2 years we have had his replacement basically on the field at all times. Our starting RT is on our roster currently.

It is still, by far, ILB. No question. Our D fell apart when we lost Shazier.

I think our best chance of finding a starting player in the first round is at TE. We really only have one TE we can count on, on the roster right now and are one play away from disaster. I'd take either Iowa tight end in the first round and be very happy. Then I would focus on Pratt from NC State in the second and then corner and wide receiver in the third. And finally a running back after that. I wouldn't be afraid to use some of our later picks to move up a couple of spots to get the players we want. This draft is super deep at RB and WR.

ILB
S
WR
OLB
so what would do is
1 bush Michigan
2 S Johnson
3 A i woould trade up and try locking butler if not take OLB Vinovich here
3 B WR Sills 6"4 Sills WV I think both Butler and sills can have the type production Burress did both huge mismatches the thing i see with butler is a chance to be a combo wr/TE like graham hernandez Gronk Sills running a 4.48 raw in routes but the potential to be everything we expected on the field from Bryant.

Imagine what happens if Vance goes down with an injury we have to draft a TE in the 1st or 2nd , Jessie James was on the field for some 62% of the snaps. Grimble is not that guy to replace him. I would love to move up and get Hockenson if he falls past buffalo.

The biggest need is a defensive playmaker. It doesn;t matter if it's ILB, CB, or a pass rusher, he needs to be a playmaker. That means if he's an OLB, he will get double digit sacks and command double teams. If he's an ILB, he is a 3 down player who is good vs the run and can also make plays in coverage. If it's a CB then he will get INTs.

This defense has a ton of good players. Heyward is a very good player. He's consistent and reliable. Is he a difference maker though? Same with Joe Haden at CB.

I'm not hung up on which position they draft in Rd 1 so long as that guy is difference maker and not another solid reliable guy. Just 1 real playmaker on this defense could lift the whole team.
