Steelers release Landry Jones; Trim to 53

I understand the Landry Jones move. In the long term I even agree with it. But I won't celebrate it because......
1. I think he is a good guy and was a loyal Steeler. Knew his place on the depth chart, but always came to play when his number was called.
2. I don't think the Steelers will be in a better position THIS year if Ben is injured in the three to four week range. One or two they should be fine. Long term or god forbid a season ender it simply doesn't matter, because Jones wasn't taking you anywhere anyhow. But on a three to four week run, I'd rather have a guy who has played and won in this league.

i understand your points, but all we need Dobbs / Rudolph to do is not turn the ball over. I think our Wrs make our easier for a qb, plus Dobbs has good wheels. I think he is better than Vick was when he was here.

Only problem i see with releasing landry is next year. If both Dobbs and Rudolph progress one of those guys deserve more than a 3rd string spot. If they kept Landry i think he would be fine sitting as QB3.

Turnovers are key. Rudolph is learning the center/QB exchange. He put the ball on the ground in 3 of the 4 preseason games. He has to get better. And he will be a bit better without Feiler snapping the ball. That kid should never hike a ball in a meaningful game. Ever. He has very poor snap mechanics.

They are both on Rookie contracts. You keep them on it till you can sift through who is better. I believe Dobbs is 2020. It ain't about deserve. We will see which one deserves. I think after 3 or 4 games one could be ok. But you get into a stadium with a guy who has not taken a regular season snap, history says odds are against you.

Agree. Given Tombert's past tendencies I was surprised they cut the experienced guy and kept a second-year guy and a rookie. Thinking they may have kept Landry if it wasn't his last year anyway.
Landry seemed to do okay coming off the bench if needed but when he had all week to prepare and think about it is when he'd **** the bed.

He is 3-2 as a starter. Now the three was at the expense of the Browns who at the end of the season all but mail it in. But to be fair the two comes from New England which may have been his best start as a Steeler and KC (I was there), where the Steelers don't play well.

Seems like we could have gotten some trade value for Landry.

You would think. Now I am seeing if someone grabs him. You would think some team, he could upgrade depth.

There were a ton of qbs being moved, plus as said before the Steeler usually reward a loyal guy with ufa status... their trades are typically disgruntled problematic guys... after the Harrison fiasco last year, they weren’t pulling any dick moves... imo at least

#3 QB is a developmental spot, you don’t keep Jones so you can move him into it. Jones had his shot, it played out as it should.

hope bell breaks a leg
put his *** on ir

this was supposed to be a quick reply to cope's drunk ***

Everyone knew we were cutting one. Probably just waiting to pick up the one we did.

As Cope mentioned earlier. The Steelers usually just cuts a vet to allow them to be able to choose their next home. Just the Steeler way usually.

I think, if they really had interest for a reasonable trade they would have taken it.

so dont ***** when our backups **** up

And that has about as much of a chance as Landry ******* up, because it wasn't like he didn't.

You don't live in your fears to the point of handicapping your growth and development as a group, a unit.

Because when Big Ben hangs them up, it would be more desirable to actually have two options that offer hope and promise.

That can battle off each other.

A more attractive option than one never will be and one might be.

As **** was traded and he was a ok dude. Just didn't fit what the Steelers were trying to do.

My guess is nobody was beating down the door for Landry Jones.

Not that there won't be interest, but not at the level of giving up something for him.

Well Jones doesn't have a job yet, and Denver just dumped Lynch. Going to be tough to convince a team you're better than their backups, especially if the other team developed their talent.

I will say, I think Dobbs is the #2. For the simple reason that he is more diverse in his skillset, and can be brought on the field in 2 QB sets with Ben. Or swapped in and out if need be. I think Fichner is really going to shake up this offense. It will be anything but boring this season. More up tempo, better personnel groupings, and putting the right players on the field to play to the defense's weeknesses. I'm looking forward to it!

Exactly!

I like the move. Gives Dobbs more reps in practice and if Ben goes down for more than a couple weeks we likely would rent a more experienced QB anyways until he comes back. If Ben goes down for weeks, it's good night Irene anyways. It is too bad we couldn't get something for ol Laundry. Like a new ice machine or something.

Mark Madden railed for much of his show Friday about how there's no way the Steelers would part with Jones, how dumb it would be to go with two young backups who've never taken a snap in an NFL regular-season game, etc.

Well, let's see what he has to say. He's on the WPXI "Final Word" show at 11:30 Eastern. I'm pretty sure it will be streamed live:

Can't stand him. Feels the Steelers front office is forever being dumb.

I can understand you you feel. I think if I still lived in Pittsburgh I'd feel the same.

But sometimes he's pretty funny -- and it's all a schtick anyway.

His comment that if the Pitt-Penn State game were played on his patio he'd "pull down the (window) shade" was pretty good.
