They need to consider a change to the rule. The move James made at the goaline is a second act. He established control going to the ground. The lunge was a second act and the subsequent contact with the ground created any dislodging of the ball though I would argue that he still had at least one hand under it.

They will change it when it suits their needs.
Unclear verbiage allows them to interpret plays as they did the other day. I keep telling you. The outcome of that game was determined ahead of time to achieve maximum press and TV ratings going forward.

The wording clearly states maintain possession through initial contact with the ground, James had possession when his knee hit the ground. So by the letter of the law as all the *** hats like to say, they got it wrong

The most telling thing in this whole debacle is that not a single one of my acquaintances who are Pats fans have uttered a peep about this, not one. When they beat us fairly, I hear about it big time. This time, other than one saying flatly "we (P*ts) should have lost," not a sound from the ones who would normally like to rub my nose in it.

Tom. There are 4 different rules.
It's set up that way so they can choose which one they want to lean on to support the call they choose to make.
In this case they choose the "Surviving the Ground" rule. James did not survive the ground. The play was too fluid, too quick. If you consider him down when his knee hits and that he loses control when he lunges and hits the ground the 2nd time you "may" have an argument. But if you are tied to the "Survive the Ground" rule, they can use the spin of the ball to demonstrate he HAD to lose control of the ball with at least one hand.
Do you understand they were DETERMINED to overturn that catch? Do you understand that?
The BEST thing that could have come out of it at that point was getting the ball at the 1 and having 20+ seconds to do something with it. But Unca Anthony couldn't have that. That was WAY too much time. So the only choice was to review ALL the potential catch rules and find one that would allow them to rule the catch incomplete.
It was fixed Tom. The NFL was determined to have the P*ts win. It makes for a better Playoff storyline. Imagine the hype of a rematch in the AFCC game?
This was the most watched game in the regular season. Can you even FATHOM what a game between these two teams would draw in the AFCC game?
It's all about the marketing and the money. Just follow the money. Course the Steelers have to GET to the AFCC game. We don't know that there's not a "Jacksonville Rises" theme that will bring the South back to watching football again.
But you can be assured, the referees and particularly the review guys in New York will do whatever is necessary to ensure the right teams advance to the AFCC and NFCC games and the SB.
Teams really should consider marketing their "story players". I kinda thought James Conner made a nice story. But now he's hurt so he'll fade.

I'm not sure they have beat us fairly in a long time. With that being said the Steelers have refused to change their approach to these clowns up until now.

When the play happened, I was watching the game at my local hangout. Sitting with a Cowboys fan who roots for the Pats (don't get me started on THAT one). Nobody at the bar knew what happened. NOBODY. EVERYBODY, including Captain Bandwagon was confused as to what the proper call was/is. He agreed at the end of the game that James caught the ball. Yesterday,he was arguing that James didn't catch the ball. I asked him why he changed his mind, and all I got was "Because that's the rule." WTFE. I brought up that the same ref and the head NY ref were involved in the 3 controversial calls that went NE's way this season and he called me crazy. I also told him that Brady went to the refs and begged them to look at the play again. (I've herad multilpe reports this happened). He said that Brady doesn't have that much pull.
Sigh.

Plus, JJ actually still had possession through not one, but two contacts, the second being when his elbow hit after making a football move.
It was only after the second elbow contact that the ball slightly moved.

This is another reason why I'm not going to get over this. The NFL robbed my brother and I an awesome sporting moment because of a ridiculous rule without CONCLUSIVE video evidence. The rule is so confusing that there is no understanding from fans, writers, etc. and there is zero consistency from the officials with their calls. It needs simplified so BS like this doesn't happen on what seems like a weekly basis.

I'm right there with you, man. I don't think I've seen my house more electric when Juju took off that sideline. Jumping up and down, yelling, screaming, giving Brady the finger when they showed his sorry *** on TV; I'm still amazed nobody called the cops on us. To finally be able to have those ***** on the ropes, without two of our most important players, is something that EVERY Steeler fan needed. I hate to say it that way, because in terms of the "bigger picture," it was just a regular season game. However, we all wanted, wanted,that particular gratification. We had those ******* guys. And not by some fluke bullshit either. The only fluke about that game was for the way we ended up losing. Literally took it away. Honestly, this one was harder to take than it is getting the doors blown off. As a fan, I hate to continue to dwell, and brood over a regular season game like this. Especially with the postseason right around the corner. But as a fan, I can really see why many are still up in arms over this one. And then as a casual spectator, you have to walk away from just watching an incredibly thrilling game saying "that just doesn't seem right." The only hope is that we get another opportunity to stomp those cheating *****.
That's the biggest ****** up thing about it, no matter how idiotic the rule is, or how hard it is to understand, they had no ******* conclusive evidence to over turn the call.

Subjectivity needs to be taken out of the NY officials hands (pun intended). As 448 stated, there NEVER was conclusive evidence that the ball was ever out of control in the right hand OR that the ball touched the ground while not ALSO resting on the right hand. It was a bullshit call which is all up to the subjective nature of the review.
IMO, the NFL is still trying to justify the incorrect call made against Calvin Johnson and Dez which influenced the outcome of the game and henceforth the BETTING LINE. Same reason the Cheats evidence was destroyed. Could you imagine the lawsuits?
The specific rule states "must survive INITIAL contact with the ground...Calvin Johnson survived the entirety of his contact with the ground and only lost control while using the ball to push off the ground to get back up. James survived the initial contact (his knee), secondary contact (his leg and hip) and his last contact with the ground (his right hand) without the ball ever leaving his control.
The rule needs to be changed from "initial contact" if they really mean "complete contact" if they are going to subjectively rule differently from week to week. They also need to add that "complete control" means that the ball never lose contact with all parts of the body (even momentarily) IF they want to rule it that way.
James never lost contact with his open right hand...it was a subjective call that any ref or coach would say (and did) that this call could go either way. Why is it that it go either way? Because some ball sucker in NY says he can see the ball touch the ground while assuming it wasn't sitting on his right hand? That's subjective, and without proper evidence to clearly see that it wasn't in control of his right hand, he NEEDED to let the play stand as called because there still isn't any evidence to show that it wasn't rotating on top of his other hand.
I'm still pissed but the prospect of beating these Cheats twice in the same season would have had me in more of a wreck than going up to Cheatsville with the NFL clearly needing a "make-up" call for us to keep the public interest.
