What our DB alignment looks like now.

Starters in the base 4-3 or 3-4 Burns, Haden, Mitchell, Davis

Nickle: Burns, Haden, Sutton, Mitchell, Davis

Dime: Burns, Haden, Sutton, Mitchell, Davis The 6th man is likely Cockrell

We still don't have a proven Slot player ( Gay is too old and slow for this role ) , and we still don't have a safety I'd feel comfortable with on cover 3, but now we can play tighter coverage as Cockrell was a zone type of corner, not a bump and run, or man type of coverage player.

Dare I say the soft zone doesn't have to be deployed as much in 2016?

I would still like a depth upgrade over Golden. Final cuts could provide a worthy candidate.

Golden is a special teams star, and a 4th type of safety. We could use a better 3rd safety.

Golson is as good as cut.

Who is Lewis? Do you mean Davis

First of all, we NEVER run a 4-3 base defense. So get that off the table...

We do run the 3-4, base nickel 4-2-5, big dime 1-4-6. We run variations from the quarters defensive scheme, 5-2-4 and various goalline formations...

The alignment has been already written in stone - RCB: Haden / FS: Mitchell / SS: Davis / LCB: Burns

Just because he's not a superstar on the edge, Cockrell excelled when playing in the slot - don't be surprised if you see him kicked inside and then the waters get murky because Hinton and Sensabaugh have been rock solid there too. I'd keep BPWG as a b/u FS behind Mitchell and cut both Goldens and Golson...

Hilton, Gay, Davis, and Simmons can run slot.

Golson can as well, but he's not in the plans. Though I do believe he is PS eligible.

Who stays, who goes?

At cornerback, one of these four is likely out. Gay, Cockrell, Sensabaugh. or Hitlon

At Tight End, one of these two is likely out. Johnson or Grimble.

Never say never. Wasn't Tomlin's specialty the base 4-3 cover 2? Errr, never mind!

Cockrell is not going to play the slot. The Steelers would rather have Sutton take that role, with Gay being the emergency plan B, and there is no rule that says Haden can't play the slot either.

Yes, Sutton was drafted to play the slot to replace an aging Gay. Sutton is likely too small and slow to be effective as an outside corner, but small, quick and smart enough to do well on the inside.

The only joke here is if Cockrell is cut!
