Demarcus Ayers turned down other offers to stay with Steelers

Demarcus Ayers had offers to join other NFL teams when he was left off of the Steelers' 53-man roster coming out of training camp. But Ayers, who was promoted to the team's active roster on Monday, will look to make his season debut this Sunday against the Bengals.

One of Pittsburgh's two seventh round picks in this year's draft, Ayers recently told Steelers reporter Chris Bradford that he wanted to remain in Pittsburgh despite fielding several calls to sign with another NFL team before the start of the regular season. The Steelers lost one of their rookies, sixth round pick Travis Feeney, when the Saints signed him off of Pittsburgh's practice squad last Friday, as the team made sure they didn't lose another rookie by promoting Ayers three days later.

“I chose to say here because I felt like this is where I got drafted at,” Ayers said on Thursday. “I didn’t want to quit on this team. I know the playbook. I know the guys. It was my decision to stay. Who knows what would’ve happened if I left? This is where I wanted to be, and I’m just happy that (it) happened.

“This team has made a tremendous jump, fought through adversity the whole season. I wouldn’t rather go to another team that’s not going to be a playoff team. If this team wins a Super Bowl, and I don’t have anything to show for it? So, I’m just glad I was able to stick it out here.”

Ayers, who mimicked Tyrod Taylor during last week's practices, enjoyed a breakout season at Houston in 2015, catching 98 passes for 1,222 yards with six touchdowns. The 5'9, 190-pound receivers was Steelers special team's coach Danny Smith's No.1 rated return man coming into the draft, returning 71 kickoffs and 33 punts during his time with the Cougars while scoring touchdowns in both capacities.

Ayers, who was slowed by an ankle injury sustained during training camp, is expected to show fans what he can do now that he is healthy and a member of the team's 53-man roster.

“I think I started to figure things out once I got healthy,” Ayers said. “Just been working hard, showing them that I can work hard, no matter what the circumstances were, (that) I could stick around and just making a name for myself and showing them that I belong in the NFL.

“All I know is I’m going to go hard work hard,” Ayers said. “Whether they ask to me to block or give me the ball, I’m just excited to be put on this team in a position to help them win.”

Nothing but love for a player like that. I hope he does well.

Great attitude! Really want to see this guy succeed!

If he reaches even half of his potential on sunday he will be our clear number 2.

I think he has the potential to be a lot like Randle El...he was used on a lot of end arounds and on fake reverse pass plays at UH. He may not get a shot at punt returns given it is so late in the season, but hopefully he shows enough in the next few weeks to solidify his position and he can fight for the punt return job in training camp next year.

Sorry to hear that they did lose Feeney, though.

Would love to see his returning talents on display in the B&G.

if we get up early he might get a chance.

Now the question is will he actually dress/be active on Sunday.

Ayers rock ;)

Saw a bit of his college highlights last night. He is dynamic. I think he can be more of a receiving threat than Randle El. It's easy to say players are dangerous in the open field. But Ayers does have an extra gear he kicks into when he has room to run

Would only look right in Black and Gold, my man!!! Great attitude, now go give em hell.

I'm really glad he choose to stay on the Steelers Practice squad and I hope he gets a helmet this weekend and the rest of the way and is able to help out the team....

I really hope you are right Coolie. Love to see it but his measurable are brutal. 4.66 pro day. At 5'9. Jeez I don't know.

Check out some of his college stuff. Ayers is pretty shifty. He may not have nfl combine speed but he definately has football speed. He has a nack for getting open. Looks to be promising if the Steelers can give him an opportunity

Ok boys. A very simple truth in life is this. No one is actually faster than their forty times. That defines your speed. Some guys are more agile and shifty then others I give you that. But frankly I'm pretty happy with Eli Rogers for that. I watched his tape he looked shifty and elusive. But two major points on the tape.
1. He made the first man miss on several plays. But the play ended before the second guy got him four yards down field.
2. The first guy who missed him is not on the field in the NFL. He works at Costco now.
I ain't hatin on Ayers. I hope he is ****** great. I just looked at the helmets he played against, his short stature and his pedestrian 40 time and I'm pretty skeptical.

Well I hope he is great. I would be surprised to see him have any impact on this season. There will be a lot of turnaround and opportunities at WR next season especially if he has returner abilities. I just don't see how he supplant Rogers this season and he looks like a slot to me. No size. No speed for the outside.
