Villanueva: ‘The Coaches Have Done A Great Job’

BY*MATTHEW MARCZI*NOVEMBER 15, 2016 AT 10:00 AM

Leave it to Army Ranger and decorated war veteran*Alejandro Villanueva*to figure out just where the blame belongs for the*Pittsburgh Steelers’ struggles over the course of the past several weeks, during which they have fallen down a rock slide from a 4-1 record and control of the division to a position in which they are now trailing the 5-4 Ravens.

I’ll give you a hint about where he places the blame: it’s not the coaches.

“How you practice is going to show up on Sundays and that’s the biggest problem we, as players, have failed to address”, he told*Chris Bradfordyesterday for the*Beaver County Times. “We’re not being accountable on the things that we must correct”.

Accountability has been a theme of late in the wake of the recent losses, with quarterback*Ben Roethlisberger*in particular citing the need for the players to be more accountable and disciplined, a mix that he, of course, threw himself in. For his part, he did play dramatically better on Sunday than he did the week before.

“The coaches have done a great job of laying down the foundation for the week, of setting all the keys to victory on paper”, Villanueva went on to say. “We’re all aware of them, but then during the week, we don’t execute the plays the way they should be”.

The second-year tackle seems to be echoing the sentiments of running back*Le’Veon Bell, who last week said after a penalty-ridden performance that their sloppy showing on Sunday did not surprise him, given the sloppy practices that they have been having. It was reported that he was pushing his teammates during this past week to clean up their practice sessions.

Bradford then quoted Villanueva as saying that he feels “especially guilty and embarrassed” by how things have gone recently, including with his own play, “because guys like [Mike]*Munchak*and [Shaun]*Sarrett*stay up to 2 in the morning on Monday and Tuesday breaking down film and doing a lot of hard work to get us ready for our opponents”.

He said that the work that the coaches do in preparation for the games “truly gives us every answer” but added that then “it comes to game and we come up short”. He is saying here, more or less, that he believes that the coaches are giving the players everything that they need prior to the game to win. It is what happens on the field that is coming up short.

Villanueva even added that “you feel for the guys who have put in more work than you”, speaking about the coaches. “You understand there’s a great network and system of coaches that are trying to provide us with every single answer”.

The military veteran certainly respects the chain of command. But then again, it’s not often that a subordinate throws his superiors under the bus. I suppose that I the job of the fans, whether or not it is justified.

A person of Villanueva's character won't talk down about his team. The stupid play calling and gambling on 2 point conversions is the coaching.

Thank you for your service Al. You are a hero to many, That said. Don't be a blowhard to the coaching staff. The o-line looks bad, but not nearly as bad as the coaches or the defense/ special teams.

blah, blah, blah, amiright?

you knew the response this would get.

Seriously, do you expect the players to say they have a problem, even if they do? If the players were speaking out, it would be a sign that the problem's even bigger than we expect.

We have a thread with numerous posts about Ben speaking out. Should we ignore that one also

If they say bad, it's REALLY bad.

If they say good. ignore.

Ben speaking out and Al speaking out are two totally different things, but Ben never specifically called anyone person or coach out either.

actually, Al sees how the offense practices. The offense is obviously doing something right.

the defense...

How are they different and why is one taken as gospel and the other dismissed?? why is one attributed to the coaching staff(Ben's comment) even though it's was not said to be so automatically believed and the one that specifically mentions the coaches ignored

Well what a HOF franchise QB says holds alot more weight than a 2nd year starter, you know that, everyone knows that.
That's why the NFL Network released the story about Ben going to Tomlin this week, you won't hear about Al's comments on the NFL Network.

Funny how that works his words hold more weight but not his play when he plays poorly. He had a great game Sunday BTW

What are you talking about? He's the first one that comes out and calls himself out when he plays bad, one of the few players that actually does it. The guy is going to the HOF with two rings and is a team leader, and has been here since 2004, that's why what he says holds more weight. Always that way with franchise QB's, always has been

Show me one time where Ben has ever NOT taken responsibility when his play is up to par. Hell, he said he didn't do enough on Sunday considering the team still lost. Keep grasping at straws though to try and show that your favorite coach does not have this team in a downward spiral.

He completed 37 of 46 passes for 400 yards and 3 TD's and still says he needs to do more.

It's not hard to figure out when he plays poorly that affects the team more then anyone else. Just as when he plays well.. we go as he does on offense. And so what if he acknowledges that he played bad after the fact. What does that change. How is that different then when the coach says the same, that is universally panned. But because Ben comes out and says I played bad it's OK.. back to the point Big AL is respected member of the locker room his words hold weight too

I just acknowledge he had a great game on sunday. So I'm not even understanding this comment. Doesn't excuse the fact he played like **** against dolphins and ravens and was part of a offense that put up three points against the eagles. But he acknowledged after the game so it's OK..

When Tomlin and Haley devise a pure **** game plan why don't you hold them accountable the same way you do Ben? Oh, that's right, coaches don't do anything in your paradigm.

Dolphins and their weak rushing defense that Tomlin and Haley decided they would outsmart everyone and NOT run the ball. The Ravens, who have a solid rush defense and Tomlin and Haley decided we should pound our speed back into the 8 and 9 men box for 3.5 qtr. Once we change it up we score 2 times. But you are right, it is all on the players...we should fire our coaches strictly because we don't need them.

Because that's your opinion it was a **** game plan. Going into the game I'm sure film was reviewed from last year where we ran all over the ravens twice one with Bell and once with Williams. The game with Bell Vick was at QB. So what's wrong with going to into the Ravens game thinking you can run. And before they went hurry up there were plays there to be made that wasn't especially in the passing game. And if you are going to excuse the passes as a QB who was injured how can you then turn around and argue with a game plan that was designed with his injuries in mind

If Tomlin is really that stupid he deserves to be fired today. Looking at film from last year? With a different QB in the game, with different players on the field...BRILLIANT! How about you look at the Ravens and what they have done THIS year, or look at what they were doing in the first qtr. and adjust from that. Well ****, it worked for Kordell and Bettis 12 years ago, lets try that game plan again.

No that wasn't just his opinion that it was a **** game plan, it was widely viewed by people that cover the team as a **** game plan, but you're right Bell is averaging 5 you, so we only run him 10 times in Miami, but yep that has nothibg to do with the game plan
