Someone will put him on their practice squad. I know I would.

A third round pick being cut after only one professional game? Especially from a team that is thin at the cornerback position. Something doesnt seem right on this.

I thought the third was pretty high for him. I would have been ok with him in the 5th or later but right now I take Gilbert over Russell so unless he is willing to sign on the PS and let us see what he can do on that for awhile I would pass.

Do we have to go over this every year? Waived players don't get added to any practice squad.

A team would have to add him to their 53-man roster.

Teams have 24 hours to place a claim on a player.

Right, if a player goes unclaimed by any team through waivers, he becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.

We'll see if he makes it.

Who knows

KANSAS CITY, MO.
The Kansas City Chiefs have released third-round pick KeiVarae Russell and brought back linebacker Dezman Moses in a surprise move just one week into the regular season.

Russell, a cornerback, had been passed over by sixth-round pick D.J. White and recent acquisition Kenneth Acker on the depth chart. Russell was the Chiefs' second player chosen in the April draft.

The move Wednesday was likely made to shore up special teams, though it was unexpected given the high draft pick the Chiefs used on the former Notre Dame standout.

if Golson is not going to return this year, IR his *** and claim this dude.

Maybe he just a little....slow

He endured problems trying to get comfortable within the team's defensive scheme.

"I'm getting better, but I definitely struggled at first," Russell said. "I still had a lot of what I learned in college in my mind ... when I'd go out to practice, the terminology I was supposed to say, I wouldn't say it the right way or I'd put it into a different defense. It's been tough, mentally."

He added: "I know I can play with these guys, but that's how the league is. Some guys grasp it the first day, and some guys take a little longer.

The article said the Chefs could sign him to their PS if no one claimed him. So, why couldn't another team do the same.

They can, but you can't claim him off waivers right to your practice squad, that's what I meant

Any team can sign him to their practice squad as an UFA, but only after he clears waivers!

If a team really likes him and claims him first, though, then they'd have to add him to their 53 man roster.

simple really

The Seahawks also waived cornerback Tharold Simon...

Simon was Seattle’s fifth-round pick out of LSU in 2013. He spent three-plus seasons either injured or prone to penalties. The Seahawks gave up waiting on him to fulfill what they saw as potential as large as his 6-foot-3, 202-pound body. This was the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, and in August he spoke as if he knew this was his last chance to impress the Seahawks. Yet he remained a backup cornerback and special-teams bit player. Simon was inactive for the opener last weekend.

That's all I need to read. No thanks. Get me an OLB (with some passing rushing skills)!!!

6,5M can be enough to get a decent OLB in FA, of course the rest of the money will be spread in a signing bonus through the length of the contract.
Jarvis is gone, and even if he stays is to be a backup on a cheap contract, Dupree is still a work in progress and even if he becomes a threat there's still one OLB missing. Moats isn't getting any ypunger and he might be decent depth but that's it, Chickillo is HOF bound but still raw....
One vet that is a serious threat to the opposing QB would do wonders for this D

Might take a look at the ND guy if he clears waivers, as Coolieman said if Golson not coming back IR him.

Salute the nation

He was a pretty good player at ND... surprised they gave up on him so quickly...

looks like Chiefs wanted more what can you do now for me CBs. I think a guy like this you put on the PS if you like him.

I had good notes on his film at ND.

Has some top end speed issues but his COD skills were solid and I thought he could really find a spot as a slot corner/nickle DB early.

Sometimes on cases like this, a suspension is coming down the pike that the public doesn't know about. Maybe he's in the drug program. Maybe he failed a test at the combine and just failed one again. Stuff like that we don't know about yet.

I was huge on DJ White. I had a third round grade on him.

According to Andy Reid there were no off the field issues

Chiefs’ abrupt disengagement with KeiVarae Russell reflects disconnect of their own

So assuming no off-field issue arose, as Reid assured, we can only surmise something went awry with the Chiefs’ evaluation process.

Maybe Russell didn’t just love football the way Dorsey thought he did — or that was implied by Russell’s overwhelmed reaction the night he was drafted, crying hard enough to choke up during a conference call about the second chance he’d been given in life: When asked about Russell’s attitude towards special teams play, for instance, Reid offered a tepid he’s “OK” there.

Maybe as smart as Russell is, obvious when speaking to him and in terms of the 3.7 grade-point average he says he had in high school, the fact that he was struggling with basic terminology spoke to an improbable football IQ issue.

Maybe it’s just the way the numbers shook out with the Chiefs having six cornerbacks and needing more depth at outside linebacker in the form of Dezman Moses, whose addition evens up the number of OLBs with corners.

Simon's a Cardinal now.

Special to CBSSports.com
(22 hrs ago) Simon was claimed by the Cardinals on Wednesday, Kent Somers of AZCentral.com reports.

Simon struggled with injuries during his time in Seattle, having played just 11 games across the past two seasons. Assuming he's completely over the knee injury that forced him from practice early last week, Simon now has a chance to rejuvenate his career alongside former LSU teammates Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu.
