PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have invested heavily in the secondary the last few years and still appear to have depth issues.

Their third cornerback this preseason has been a safety, rookie Sean Davis. The Steelers would like to sign Keenan Lewis but have not because of his lingering groin/hip issues.

But with 15 days before the opener at Washington, the Steelers are experimenting with lineup changes in practice.

On Sunday, the team worked this group together, according to defensive coordinator Keith Butler: veteran William Gay in the slot, safety Robert Golden moving to inside linebacker (which he did at times last year in the nickel package), Davis at safety alongside Mike Mitchell and first-rounder Artie Burns on the outside alongside Ross Cockrell.

Burns was back at practice Sunday after missing much of the last month with a quad injury.

"We are going to look at other things," Butler said. "We take a look at that to get a feel for where they are at."

Asked about whether corner depth is a concern -- the fourth corner is anyone's guess -- Butler said, "We've got some guys who could end up being pretty good players."

This lineup would get the Steelers' top two picks, Burns and Davis, on the field together. Davis has split time between safety and slot corner.

If Burns is ready for game action, he gives the Steelers more flexibility. He's a true outside corner. And he's expected to play a lot in the final preseason game so the Steelers can evaluate his readiness.

"He needs to play and he looks like he's fine to me," Butler said. "He looks like he's ready to play. He's behind in regards to being on the field. You can't substitute for that."

Generally, Butler likes what he's seeing from all of his defensive rookie draft picks, particularly third-round tackle Javon Hargrave. The Steelers felt they were getting a 'steal' in Hargrave during April's draft, Butler said, and Hargrave has affirmed that belief.

As for Davis, the Steelers like him enough to try him at both spots. Butler said he's making sure not to overload him and admits certain slot receiver matchups have been a challenge for the rookie. For example, Lions receiver Anquan Bolden "schooled him a little bit" in the preseason opener, Butler said.

"He can handle it mentally," said Butler of Davis playing both spots. "Physically, we'll see."

Butler is trying to get his group game-ready for the Washington Redskins now. After Sunday's practice, Butler personally ran a group of linebackers and defensive backs through a handful of 'suicide' sprints because, as he says, the game tackling needs to improve.

"Their legs are tired right now," Butler said. "I'm going to make them more tired, make sure their legs are Ok before we play that Monday night game."

nice to hear, to avoid Timmons dropping more I would use a 4-2-5 formation more of
de heyward
dt hargave
dt tuitt
de Dupree.matthews
lb shazier
lb/s golden / davis
cb cockrell
cb burs
gay
s Mitchell
s davis/grant

Davis knocked the ball away from Snead in the EZ...made a good play...Snead just got the lucky bounce that they should have saved for real games.

I love the idea of taking Timmons off the field during passing situations and putting Golden in his spot. Timmons couldn't cover Peyton Manning if he went out for a pass. And yes Peyton did outrun Timmons before.

Gay whiffed on a bunch of tackles outside - wonder if that has anything to do with it

As f83 said I too prefer a 4-2-5 but the second ILB could be JJ as he's decent in coverage.
Or use Harrison as the 4th DLineman and Dupree as the second LB

How dare you see something exactly as it happened, without a agenda

As well either JJ or Moats can be the 2nd LB in a 4-3 base nickel which is often 4-2-5 Lets see if LD Walton makes it and if Chikello or Feeney both make it and you for a pass rush put a penetrating gap shooting unit of say
DE Tuitt/Chickello to rest Tuitt
DT Matthews
DT Hargrave
De Heyward
LB Shazier
LB Jones/Moats/ Feeney as a hybrid LB/S

Gay should play the slot. It is probably the most demanding position mentally.

The fact they are playing Golden and hoping for Burns speaks volumes about Shamarko and Grant. I mean all Shamarko is good for is being a missile vs the run and he can't even be the guy to play LB in a nickel? What good is he? Likewise Grant must be way behind if they want to trust Burns more than him.

Shamarko has been here a long time and still cant start. Other than special team play he has nothing.

Same here. Timmons just doesn't have the speed anymore. It was an issue last year as well. Golden could be the teams most under rated player. Guys all around solid.

Coach Lake's experiment with Davis in the slot should end. I do no think Burns is ready for the outside, but he should be okay on 3rd and long,

Still don't like our cb depth. We should sign or trade for another starting caliber cb.

Isn't it just for this last preseason game? I think they just want to see what Burns can do on the field since he has been hurt rather than anything regarding Grant.

Eric Rowe....he would start for us probably.....

Eagles' Pass D was only marginally better than the Steelers last year in YPG and YPA. Rowe was part of that Pass D. 2nd round pick they want to get rid of after 1 year. Maybe he is decent, but why would a terrible Pass D want to give up a decent player after only one year unless there is something we don't know?

I know we loved him coming out of the draft. Maybe he doesn't fit their new defensive scheme?

Because he's not too bright. Major struggles picking up the D.

Browns just cut a good slot corner...we should give him a look see/claim him. Steelersdepot has write up on him.
