Not off to a good start. Defense in total disarray in week 1. This week will tell us more. Does it continue?

I'll give him a couple more games before I judge him, but he's definitly on a short leash

Yea it was only one game but he's been under dick for 10 yrs or so, if he doesn't bring something to the table he's gotta go.

So after one week some are already calling for his head. Gotta love it

He's the perfect scapegoat for the poor drafting that has ravaged this club particularly on defense since Tomlin became HC. He inherited what looks like an empty cupboard. Its like trying to run the Kentucky Derby with plow horses. Well maybe not that bad but you get my point. He ain't got the horses Uncle Dick had to work with.

You gotta admit, what he did with Gronkowski was a bold move.

I imagine the thought pattern went like this...

Voice in Butler's head: Nobody can cover Gronk!

Butler (in his real voice): It's true, nobody CAN cover Gronk!

Voice in Butler's head: I don't know what to do about that.

Butler (in his real voice): Well, I could put Timmons on him, full time... I guess that's a band-aid.

Voice in Butler's head: Wait a minute. I just had a thought! NOBODY CAN COVER GRONK!

Butler (in his real voice): Ya, we've established that...

Voice in Butler's head: No, don't you see. NOBODY COVER'S GRONK!

Butler (in his real voice): You know, it's just crazy enough to WORK!

Gronk running uncovered down the field, not talent related.
Boykin sitting on the effing bench the entire game while our defenders were being beaten like rented mules, not talent related.

Boykin is hurt and will prob not play this week. Cortez hurt too. We may get to see what Cockrell can do.

You don't honestly believe Butler's game plan was to leave Gronk uncovered now do you? Come on man! No, what happened was a lack of communication among a bunch of back-up players in that secondary. You don't have the talent back there, plain and simple. Butler had a game plan in place to cover him but these guys flat out just stink and should not be starters on any NFL roster. Boykin is another matter. No one seems to know what's up with that but I'll bet its more on Tomlin than Butler. Now you honestly think that Butler or any defensive coordinator would keep a defender on the bench that could help the team? There is something else going on here and of course Captain Cool Shades keeps it a mystery. Most likey Boykin has injury issues.

I feel sorry for Butler. I think he is probably a good coach and has certainly waited his turn for this. Problem is that I think the reason Lebeau left was that him and cool shades were at odds over how to run the defense and part of Butler's hire was that cool shades wants his fingerprint on it. And it isn't working.

I don't know WHAT his plan was. I do know the dude was not covered. I would place an completely unprepared bunch of players at the feet of the coach whose job it is to have them prepared. That's just me. Maybe our players are all so brick dumb that they can't execute a plan that should have been very well thought out and practiced. I know they were very good at TALKING about how they were going to hit Gronk off the line. I know they THOUGHT they were going to cover him, but why didn't they? I don't know, but I don't think it had to do with them sucking. Running toward him and not being able to cover him would indicate ability, or lack of. Not even noticing he was in the game, unless all those ******* went blind at the sight of His Magesty Tommy Boy, I have no explanation for other than ****** ******* coaching and preparation.

I hope the damn defense looks better this week.

Lest ye forget...

Wait. I thought it was LeBeau's fault that this defense sucked so bad. :idk:

This place is ridiculous. Players get killed on here all the time for perceived lack of talent or for their performance. Tomlin gets killed regularly for players being ill prepared, or not doing their jobs properly. He deserves criticism for the way the team looks and performs, but players play, coaches coach. I don't exactly know who's fault it was that the best player on the opposing offense went uncovered multiple times in a game we could have won.

I can promise you the 4th graders I used to coach would have figured out some kid is killing us, we better pick someone to guard him better than anyone else in that stadium did last week. It was a fail by every coach and player on the roster. Hell, Ben should have gone over and asked "Hey, fucktards, is somebody gonna check their best player, you know the biggest damn receiver on the field?" Instead of always trying to pin the blame on an individual, in a case like this it was a fail from the top down.

Tomlin could have called a TO when he saw Gronk uncovered. But I guess a TO is more valuable than an opposing team getting a TD. Butler is to blame for some of this mess but the players aren't that great either. The idea that Butler was going to play press coverage and have new schemes to get to the QB was a fantasy dreamed up by fans that wanted DL gone. Well you got what you wanted. DL is gone and Butler is left with this ****. It is a talent problem as well as a coaching problem. But Butler is new and Tomlin has implemented "his" defense. He's drafted his players and he is the one who decides how much the new defense is practiced during pre-season and who plays and when. They had 5 pre-season games to put this in place and they wasted it on players that aren't even on the team anymore.

I will say I'm really tired of hearing the "it's a very complicated defense" excuse whether it be for young players not playing or confusion on the field.

DL always got a bad rap for the "young players not playing". Almost every single starter played his rookie year and was starting by his 2nd year. Players like Hood, Jones and Shazier were starting their rookie years.

If the Steelers would of offered Dick a contract he still would be here.

Putting 10 men on the field (twice), is not a talent problem. Leaving there leading receiver uncovered, is not a talent problem, nor is trying to cover him with a special team player.

Im confused...People seemed happy we only gave up 28 points to the Pats who have scored 50 on dick before...Now we get a thread about wanting Butler gone...The bottom line is no one knows. The D has been regressing for years. Personally I would have not have hired Butler. He was the LBs coach and our LBs have not been developing. It could be they are just not good players, but I would have brought in someone who was proven and aggressive. We will see if they make any strides this week.

They didn't. And I realize it is an assumption, but I would bet a lot that him and Tomlin started to differ over x's and o's on defense. Hence they are playing zone, Tampa- Two now that Dick is gone.
