Vick meeting with Steelers

The front office should be ashamed for note having a suitable qb ready. So they sign vick, a washed up broken down veteran. But they held on the Landry Jones all this time for nothing. Tombert has no eye for talent.
This is really the issue. After sleeping on it, the fact is I was a Steelers fan before any of the current roster and coach was here and I will likely be afterrwards if Goodell doesnt run me off all the way.

Gotta say from a roster standpoint, I could care less about it. I think there is merit to him being a better stop gap than anyone on the roster and they certainly need an arm for now. But there is baggage and that is undeniable. But really there isn't much more here to hold my interest than bringing back Legs. What has held me for 30 some pages is fandom, fan loyalty and where people think they actually stand in this. I'm as guilty as anyone of using the term WE when the Steelers win, win championships, make good draft picks and sign players I think will be good. And most of us say THEY when the team loses, picks poorly in the draft or takes a chance on a player we don't like. They real truth is that it is always THEY. You and I are not a member of the organization in any way shape or form. And so much hypocrisy comes out of the woodwork when something like this happens. And most of it isn't even intentional. I really respect Wingman, I think he is a passionate, knowledgeable fan. But I also think he is pretty naive about his Roethlisberger/ Vick comparison and innocent until proven guilty. You replace Ben Roethlisberger's name to those incidents with Tom Brady and there is barely a one of us that wouldn't still be referring to him as Tom Rapey.

What? No Vick Steelers jersey for sale yet? I can't wait all day

Wonder what creative tee shirts we will see next game?

Death to Mexico?

Vick is going to kill the Browns?

Where was Vick when Joey Porter got shot?

I mean there is some comedy gold to be mined here....

My thoughts after having time to digest this -- I feel bad for those of you who have never been close enough to a pet to be able to understand the outrage some of us have. I have been around animals my whole life and cannot fathom how any human being would get enjoyment from their torture. That's just the mindset I'm coming from and that isn't going to change. Just because I love animals doesn't mean I don't care about domestic violence or child abuse. I am a multifaceted human being, capable of caring about more than one thing at a time.

I can't remember ever being ashamed to be a Steeler fan before today. People try to draw comparisons with Ben, but they don't hold any weight with me. Why? Because there was no evidence against Ben, and he was never charged much less convicted. He was guilty of being an ******* and treating people like ****, but not rape. I read the police reports and that's the conclusion I drew. And that's the conclusion the D.A. drew as well. If I actually believed Ben raped those girls, I would not be a Steelers fan today. Period.

Another difference is Ben was already on the team, and as such I had a rooting interest in him changing his life around. In Vick's case, the Steelers willingly brought in from the outside a person who was convicted of heinous acts. They weren't already "saddled" with him, they chose to bring him here. That's the difference.

I feel pretty indifferent towards the team right now. I suppose by the time the season starts, I will be there watching and hoping for the best. But my excitement over football was already much less than years ago, before all of this. In light of that, I will just say that if Ben goes down, I'm out. I cannot root for Vick without feeling like a complete hypocrite. So if he has to start any games, I will not be watching or caring what happens. Should that come to pass, I wish the rest of you well.

Let me know when its time wear the RON MEXICO jersey's. I'm conflicted. As a fan to win a game I'd take Vick over Landry Jones, however I do not think Vick is close to what he was. He's in-accurate, He's a bad character guy. A scum bag, and someone who has earned a bad rep.

I hope he never takes a snap in a game.

How many front offices shouldn't feel ashamed then? How many teams are all set with a top-end starter at QB and a quality back-up? How many teams would still have a good QB depth chart after losing their #2 QB to injury?

I'd be opposed to that as well, but at least what Rice did wasn't premeditated and repetitive or done for amusement.

It can be argued that Rice made a mistake.

Vick's acts were NOT a mistake.

If you think that was the first time Ray Rice laid hands on that woman you're kidding yourself. Nobody's first time hitting a woman is a ******* knockout skull punch followed by dragging her around emotionless.

You just have to understand that people are sometimes raised with different values of living things... I dont think twice about swatting a fly, or eating a lambchop. There are entire societies that openly eat dogs. Vick was raised in an unfortunate culture that advocates that barbaric practice. its been growing in America for a long time. Its why he seemed so non chalaunt about it all when it happened... there wasnt a realization that it was as appaling as it is. He seems to get it now. Its somewhat like blaming a child who grew up in a cannibal tribe for being a cannibal. That does not make it right, or excuse him from paying for his crimes, but it at least gives the guy some chance to show that he truely gets it now and has grown from his prior shortcomings.

things would be different if the guy was still advocating animal abuse, or had weaseled out of his punishment, but he took it, moved on, and looks on paper at least, to be a changed man.

Perhaps, but it's not like tapped her on the shoulder, sucker punched her and then turned around, laughed and high-fived his homies. There was emotion involved.

I appreciate what you are saying and the way you stated it. I guess it's just such a foreign idea to me that it isn't common human decency to understand that kind of fundamental right from wrong. And it's a bit like saying, well little Teddy over there grew up in a family of murderers so he didn't know any better. I mean, really? This guy was a grown adult who had been exposed to many different cultures and people during his life to that point. He knew it was wrong - he just didn't care because he liked it.

The whole thing that happened with Ben in Georgia really changed my viewpoint on being a fan. Initially, I felt disgust and reacted in much the same way many of you are now. There was a lot of heat out there from fans of other teams and I wouldn't even turn on anything sports related because I just didn't want to hear the conjecture or anything about it for that matter. By draft night that season, I'd have been fine with them moving him for a reasonable price. While I will always contend that there was never anything proven in court, I fully accept that nothing good happened that night. And I am quite disgusted by the sort of smear that still goes on about the girl involved. She didn't press the thing, she just wanted it to go away and move on with her life. And for some of you to bring up stuff about her choices and the DTF etc. is really brutal. You replace Ben Roethlisberger with some BMOC football player at your local college town and that girl with your daughter or sister and see what your tune would be then.
So I went on cheering for the Steelers and at first a little begrudgingly about Ben. I have a son who was smart enough to know what was going on at the time, so I decided to use it as an on going teachable moment. We talk about these players as people capable of making bad choices like anyone. Cheering their play over idolizing their persona. And recognizing that all people make mistakes, sometimes very bad ones and can still do better. Ben Roethlisberger has done a lot since that time. He is thrilling to watch on the field. He always takes responsibility for his own play over his teamates. He accepts that he will never get the accolades he deserves in this league and doesn't whine about it. He is a husband and father who hasn't brought a poor light on this team since. He responded to a tweet my son sent him a few weeks back and said he was going to get that 7th ring this year. People chamge.
Most importantly, I learned that I'm not a 12 year old with pictures in my room thinking these guys are pure and heroic. Hell there were lots of guys I played football with who were complete ********. But they were teammates, and between the lines I had their back and they had mine

Perhaps you're kidding, or need some glasses for real. Had he given a **** about her in the least his reaction would have been panic, and trying to help her. Not dragging her limp body out of the elevator looking for a way out of the situation he put himself in. I can't even believe any sane human being would even put that **** in the same area code as killing any animal. As reprehensible as I see dog fighting and torture, Mike Vick wasn't in jail for killing dogs. He was in jail for racketeering. Nobody has ever gotten a prison term like that for any kind of animal cruelty.

I agree. Mrs. Burgundy and myself work with a local adoption group for retired racing greyhounds and have been a foster home for 36 and counting. We are dog people (plus one devil cat). That said, we both feel that Vick has done his time and paid his debt to society.

Again, I agree and I'm not trying to argue with you, but in this case it would seem that Vick also turned his life around before he got here.

The whole "Steeler Way" thing was bullshit and if it ever existed it's been gone for ten or so years anyway. All that meant was that the Steelers generally did not sign or draft known troublemakers, not that a few didn't slip though the cracks. In this case as far as we can tell Vick has been out of trouble and a model teammate for the past five years. Our team is not morally superior to any other team except the Bungles and Pats**. As mentioned way back, a lot of NFL players would be gangbangers, dead, or in jail if they didn't have football as an outlet. Bam Morris with a trunkload of weed. Rod Woodson involved in a theft. The Pouncey twins are only one wild weekend away from Aaron Hernandez. Our team AIN'T a bunch of choirboys and never has been. I'm not a Vick fan and never will be, but I can't see flipping out when the team signs someone who has paid his debt to society and turned his life around either (not that I don't wish they found someone else, Brett Favre maybe but he tweets pics of his dick). If all goes well, meaning Ben doesn't get hurt, Vick never plays anyway.

Did you know that the hamburgers you eat are from tortured cows? And those same cow's are sacred and regarded as pets in India? And the same animals we call pets here are food in Korea. Point is there is animal "abuse" everyday. But in the end They're all still animals. Not humans.

Did you know that there is a difference between killing an animal to provide food for people and torturing an animal to get your jollies?

How can this front office reconcile signing Michael Vick but avoiding Randy Gregory in the draft?

Other teams' fans are already making up memes about "A rapist, a dog killer, and a pot head walk into a bar".... Total f'n embarrassment. **** Michael Vick, and everyone in the front office who signed off on acquiring him.

Wingman, how many posts are you going to make on this messageboard over the next 4 months? 0? 500?

I'm betting it's a lot.

I have no problem with how many times he posts. A active board is better than a dead board.

Also for all the comparisons comparing Harrison or Ben to a dog killer is ridiculous.

One of the stupidest comparisons ever.

I now go by a extra FU.

**** the Patriots
**** the Ravens
**** Mike Vick

Go 52 Steelers!
