I did an extensive exhausting research with triple checking A I adjusting starters home grown only over Omar’s tenure with the guideline as a teams undrafted can count. Warren was outside of the timeline BTW . For example Cook wasn’t our home grown UDFA but Tampa’s.

8 of 22 = 36.4% of their projected starters coming from their own 2023-26 draft classes.

I think it is fair teams can include their own undrafted into the equation.

I kept the criteria the same for each team. Where did your starters come from someone else’s evaluation or your own?


Which Omar - Steelers comes in tied for 5th out of 32.

So to date Omar has arguably done well.
 
No first round draft picks from 2018-2023 left on the roster is a big ouchie though.

My memory is faded as to when Omar started, remember his 1st year wasn’t his draft as Colbert was kept on through the draft…

Colbert had no business conducting the 2022 draft. None. He was gone the next month so what the @#$% was he doing handling the draft?!? And the 2022 draft is one of the worst in franchise history - only Pickens was good. Pickett, Leal, Austin, Heyward, Robinson and Oladokun were all terrible picks.

I’ve always thought that a GM needs a 5 year window to make the team his own. And of course a GM should be able hire/fire a coach and override every roster decision. Obviously there is collaborating. Omar put his name right out of the gate with the Chase trade. That kept the goodwill with the fans instantly.
I tried to google the amount of free agents /player movements that have been signed during his tenure and never get a complete list. We seem to have had a ton of old player signings that are never heard from again after one or less year and done here. Or never ever live up to their previous play.

I’d say the OLine,QB and WR situation is his now to own. As per usual for the last 6 years there are questions with all three.
We need longer term improvements. The clock is ticking Omar.

I like Omar. I think he’s important to the organization. Personally I would hire Andy as GM. And bump up Omar in some title thingy to take care of money/cap/ negotiations.

3 huge chicken-**** decisions that I was quite outspoken about that years later I still shake my head at.

Keeping Colbert on for the draft after they knew he was gone. Laughable.
Bringing in the dog murdering POS Micheal Vick. My respect for the organization dropped a spot.
Keeping a certain HC far too long. Because of complacency.

All of these as far as I am concerned fell on the owners hands.
 
Boys, please keep in mind who the CEO/HC was when Colbert and Kahn made these picks minus the 2026 draft.
Tomlin had an enormous amount of influence on these drafts so it wasn’t all on the GMs.
Also, who was ultimately responsible for developing these players and playing them in their best positions to succeed? Mikey T!

Much respect for you, but gotta disagree with your premise to say he’s done well because a big chunk of our starters come from our draft

How have those teams preformed? How have those players preformed?

No playoff wins from this group. Very few pro bowl selections. How many of them would be starters on 2/3 of the teams in the league?

IMO the high percentage of our draft picks starting are based on the philosophy of the front office on how they construct the roster, it’s not necessarily a reflection of how good the drafts were or how good the players were, or how good Khan is

For me the jury is out on Khan, his drafts need to pan out much better players. Tomlin had influence I’m sure but they’re still Khans drafts too.
 
Teams whiff of first rounders, always have always will.
Huey Richardson, Troy Edwards, Tim, Worley, Artie Burns,Jamain Stephens.
I had no problem with the Broderick Jones pick. They drafted the best guy in a position that they needed. Dan Moore Jr was not the answer there.

There are guys every team will whif on in every round. It happens. The problem I have had with the past coaching regime is the development. I agree with Trai Essex on his assessment with Jones. I think he will be fine in Dallas.

Well they performed with no losing seasons.

I feel yinz pain though plenty of times I threw objects in the air during those playoff futilities.

Will be interesting to see the difference between one coaching staff and the new crop.

I wanted Jones throughout the draft process and was happy they got him. It’s exactly what they needed. And like you…I think he’ll be just fine in Dallas. If of course his injury has healed. Obviously he didn’t work out here. I do blame some on coaching and of course the player. It’s a crapshoot. And down below were the reasons he was drafted. And there’s no doubt someone would have drafted him right after us.

Jones has no trouble handling pure speed off the edge, and he mirrors with ease as a pass-protector. He fires out and frequently knocks back defensive linemen with his upper-body power in the run game. He also has tremendous range as a second-level blocker and on screens. Post-Draft Analysis​

The Steelers need to do a better job of keeping 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett upright and giving him time to find his playmakers downfield. Starting offensive tackles Dan Moore Jr. and Chukwuma Okorafor each ranked 30th or lower at the position in pass block win rate last year. Pittsburgh also needs to create more running room for Najee Harris. Jones can line up on either side, but Pittsburgh is likely drafting him to protect Pickett's blind side. -- Muench

Projected Year 1 impact: High-impact Day 1 starter. Jones has the most upside of any of the offensive tackles in this year's group. His quick feet and upside make him an immediate starter at either tackle spot. -- Jordan Reid

I never could understand the brain storming that went into that decision of keeping Colbert employed for that.

I'm guessing the teams pre-formed their opinions about the players ahead of the draft like most teams but the players, I'm not sure how a player can pre-form anything outside of a hamburger or a cheesecake I guess. ;)

Overall, I like what Khan has done. His free agent process has been up and down, but drafting has been solid. But like I posted in the other thread, the Steelers just don't have enough top players on the roster. They have an aging superstar in TJ Watt and that's it. Frazier is a future Pro Bowler, but he's a center. JPJ may be their best or second-best young player and half think he's great and half think he's severely overrated. Hopefully with the new staff in place we'll see a higher percentage of players exceed their potential.

Good to touch on that as I didn’t with your WR comment. If this new group of coaches can coach them up, then the youth will be well served and the team will benefit from that improvement.

As that is what will matter. I look at the Patriots and Seattle they were taught and coached up.

Never can underestimate what knowing X and Os can do for a team. What teaching well can do for a team. Putting players in a position to succeed can do for a team.

Being able to adapt adjust .. what it can do for a team.

We will see how many of these fits our new coaches. I love they have an opportunity to find out…

This is it. I think of Dick LeBeau who was able to help turn great prospects into superstars and Hall of Famers. He was able to turn James Farrior into a DPOY candidate. Players who may have been average or even below average on other teams were key contributors. There is a pretty strong foundation in place, we just need to see more.

Dylan Cook was an UDFA with Tampa who was waived after one PS year and signed to our roster. He was kept on the active roster the whole season to keep Tampa ( or anyone else) from reacquiring him.. calling him home grown after one ps season is a stretch, lol

Was the formula I chose not to take credit if they started somewhere else and each team was evaluated with that same approach. I obviously know that it can be shared or tilted towards the second or third team. Etc.

That would have needed a lot more deciphering on a person to person basis.

Wasn’t really gluing into calling him something.. was more glued into an approach that could compare all the teams in regards to one aspect..
