Benton wants paid?

Just crazy....the article speculates on the open market he might get $25 mill. Kind of puts the Porter situation into a new light possibly here on the board. Of course those saying Porter isn't worth $25 mill plus will say that Benton isn't either. The open market might just say other wise though. We will see how it all plays out.

This is why the Watt extension is a head scratcher. We all saw it hurting us at some point on resigning our own. Add in the other head scratchers in the 2 WRs we traded for and extended.
 
Ive been an advocate of signing Benton long term and worry they will be making the very same mistake they made with Big Dot when he was here.
Dotson was played out of position here but goes to the Rams and plays his normal position from college and becomes a pro bowl player. Yes, coaching does matter.
Benton is not and has never been a NT. Kick him outside and watch him excel.
Pay him now before he gets away and gets too expensive. No, they’d rather pay a guy like Watt for past performances than a pay an up and comer like Benton.
Pay Benton, move him outside, and do something with Watt in 2027. His cap number is going to be ridiculous and for a guy that most likely doesn’t get close to 20 sacks ever again.

The WATT contract is really going to mess things up and send us to situations similar in the past.

We will have to restructure Watt’s contract and add un-wanted yers to it in order to clear the money we need.

We will be robbing future to pay now.

Kahn needs to get ahead of this $$$money-majic$$$ he is projected to have, lets see the manicuring now that it is going to count.!!!

Benton is a mid-level starter. Carter really thinks Benton would get $25 million per year on the open market? That would make him the 7th highest paid IDL in the league. IMO, that is a crazy ask and it'd be an incredibly dumb move for any GM in the NFL to sign Benton to that type of deal.

Based on stats, Benton compares favorably to Travis Jones--who is probably a better overall player. Jones just got a contract extension with the Ravens worth $13.5 million per year.
 
25 per would put him out of the Steelers range imo

If he wants/gets coin like that it won’t be from the Steeles. They’ll let him play out the deal and get the comp pick…

OR

He seeks a more reasonable number for his contract. Something around 3 years 50 million with at least 15-20 in bonus should get it done imho

More than that and he likely is kicking rocks and going elsewhere.

They can’t just continually over pay all defenders in an effort to keep that top paid D rating.

Article was saying he has room for improvement definitely in the run stop area but the upside of his pass rush will have teams throwing cash around for upwards of $25 mill per year. So it is his upside that a team will be paying for. Not his product of today per se.

How many 20 million a year plus defenders are they gonna try to stack on the D???

Can’t pay everyone 20 million

At some point money has to be spent on the offense
 
Are we so sure the Watt contract will be crippling, with the salary cap going up so much every year?

Well if he is getting around 10 sacks per season.......is it crippling or great?

It's not crippling in the sense they can't make moves. Watt just had a bad year and they need him healthy and producing at an elite level for this team to maximize its potential.

Joey has proven it..pay him first. Let's see if they use KB properly and then worry about signing him. You can't sign everyone...........if he's great and u cant resign him you get a nice comp pick........if he doesnt show real progress this year......let him go.....you saved money for the O line that is gonna cost a lot soon

His brother didn't age well. Watt is one of those guys that is a double edge sword........he plays so hard, so intense that when he's healthy he's all world but you can only play like that for so many years before your body shuts down. He either had an off year and will be tremendous or he's gonna be a shell of his former self soon. I just don't see Watt age like Cam. I do think that contract was a poor choice........I think I would have traded him.......listen I'm a poker player.......you constantly assess risk. You aren't right all the time but sometimes you have to fold aces and sometimes you have to go all in with 55..........you just have to make calculated risks as a GM and live with those decisions. I was OK with trading Watt for serious draft capital before the resign if the capital was juicy. He's over 30......the NFL is brutal man.

Most likely (or is it hopefully) in 2027 when Frazier and McCormick will be entering the last year of their contracts, and 2028 when Fautanu will be entering his option year (or 2027 if the Steelers extend him in 2027).
 
Benton has been OK, at best. He is not in the top 20 linemen and is probably outside the top 30. They may not even try to sign him now and play the wait-and-see if he improves this year. Then, he may move up into the top 30 or even 20, but I doubt he ever gets anywhere near a top 10 player. Offer him accordingly, and then let him walk if he thinks he's a top player in the league.

Simple answer there. Trade while his value is high.
