I think this is an average type of draft. When I see who's projected to be on the board, I pretty much think we can get the same type of player grade early in round two. The best edge rushers and top corner will likely be gone before we pick.

As such trading down, or up might be the best thing for the Steelers.

I know Peters had some off the field issues, but he is a great player and I would consider him at 1.22. Beasley is also smallish and would be good value, but just may be too small.

Bud Dupree is the guy I kinda want, then grab Rollins or Jalen Collins in rd 2. Otherwise I would go with Peters in rd 1 and Mauldin in rd 2. I think we can get solid value in rd 1. Lots of wr's will go in the first picks, along with some Olineman.

It sounds like Peters has lots of issues. The Steelers have picked too many bad character types that have not panned out. There is a difference between football character and off the field stuff. IMO, Peters is too much of a gamble in round one. He's not a top 15 type of talent. We'll see how he works out.

I miss the days of our normal boring drafts. Pick up a O lineman or two in the first couple rounds then go after BPA after that and then develop them. Thing is, our player development is horrible anymore.

Amen. I'd like to be a fly on the wall regarding player development. Here's a mock conversation!

Colbert to Tomlin 2014 season. We have to start Mike Adams this year! He'll be a free agent soon, and we need to know what we have before Beachum is a free agent.

Tomlin: Adams is not ready yet.

Colbert: Well coach him up, and get him ready.

Tomlin: ( Slightly annoyed ) We tried, he's just not very good.

Colbert: ( Slightly annoyed ) How can you say that, he hasn't got a chance to prove it! He our best run blocker by a good margin. He just needs more reps as a pass blocker.

Tomlin: ( Raises his voice ) I've been coaching for 20 years, your 2nd round pick can't play!

Colbert: ( Quips back ) Munchak does not agree with your assessment!

At this point a 3rd party intervenes and they break for lunch.

Peters is def a top 15 talent. I don't think we tackle him, but his coaches have said he wasn't a bad guy. Even more talented than Wayans, whom will be gone by the time we pick. If we re-sign Worlids, I could maybe have us take the Minn TE and then a corner in rd 2...maybe Rollins, Williams, etc. I would even trade up in rd 2 to get my guy. After rd 3, the cb talent drops off a decent bit.

here are realistic guys i see at 22
OLB Harold Virgina can replace Worlids instant
OLB Dupree Kuntucky " ""
Cb Waynes MSU instant contributor with a high chance on our sad secondary to start
CB Collins LSU see above comments
DT/Nt/DE Shelton Washington massive NT, could turn to be Hampton/Poe or Ta'amu or a poor man's kris Jenkins
NT Goldman FSU could by a hybrid of Hampton and Ngata, has the height to line up at DE if needed 6"4 315
Te Max Williams Minnesota in the start might be just used like Jimmy Graham, but unliky jimmy Max has blocking potential and could be a Gronk in the making
SS Collins Bama a Solid in the box safety has a good nose for the ball but with our coverage problems and Collins lack of ability to play deep, would be a project
CB Kevin Johnson Wake forest Small school stud with great attributes but since he did not face elite competition and is a bit light might have to start in the slot and work his way, still great potential
CB Alex Carter Stanford Steeler mold CB ready to play built for the 3-4, needs a good combine and pro day to push himself asa day 1 pick lock.
PJ Williams Fsu see above

Not a great fan after hearing some breakdown on Collins but he must be as a rook better than Troy as a Starter vs the run but just like troy and Mitchell he sucks in coverage which makes him a very iffy choice.
I just wonder how much upside. Max Williams is just there BPA and b/c of heath's age and he with our spread attack could really help.
I really see Waynes as the most ready to play CB with his frame and speed I think he could start opposite of Gay if he falls to 22, same with Carter, Jalen Collins I really like but he and PJ Williams could be there in round 2. Collins and Williams have the frame to immediately play in our attacking 3-4 but if Olumu is there with our 2nd round pick I would lean towards him he has splash play maker written all over him and with Lebeau gone , I think Tomlin with Butler may mix in some Tampa 2, where we have may just need a few bodies to run that set like a S's that can cover a lot of ground. In that set you could play Olumu as a FS ala Dexter Jackson.

I swear we better not take Vic Beasely to small to play LOLB and to light, if we pick him its a true sign that a hard and quick move to the 4-3 is coming where the the 3 LB's would be OLB Timmons MLB Shazier OLB Beasley.

My darkhorse is Dupree's teammate ZaDarius Smth 6"6 260, projected in between round 3-4, hopefully he runs faster to mid 4.7 he could be great rotating LB/DE big enough to in the 4-3 play DE and disruptive enough in overload sets to stand up and rush.

I hear Ted E Bubbagump OLB is a sleeper in unknown WTFYS league. 6'6 360 lbs vertical leap 52", benches 225 106 times and runs the 40 in 4.31.

Trade back. Get CB Rollins and OLB Golden in late first/ second. RB Abdullah in late 2nd, TE Koyack in third. Would also like to see us get CB/QB Marshall in 4th or 5th round. This would let us carry only 2 QB's and Jones could move on to his lifes work: Landry Jones Laundry Service. I would resign McClain and Moates and offer Worlids 4 year 20 million contract with 10 million signing bonus max. He's not worth a penny more. If he wants to go elsewhere then give Deebo what ever he wants for 1 more year.

We've been looking for first round value for couple years now....if either Shazier or Jarvis Jones don't pan out this defense is set back years.

Disagree. Williams and Spence can play. We are thick at ILB.

Some see value in MULTIPLE picks - the more the merrier. Not me, give me picks that can play on Sunday as soon as possible - I've said it many times in the past - QUALITY always supersedes QUANTITY.

Trade up and get you guy...

Zack,

I saw the youtube clips on Peters. He is a very good to great corner once the ball is in the air. Capable of jumping routes, contesting jump balls, or breaking up passed by knocking them away. His hands and ability to track a football are outstanding! His hands are glue. I'm not sure how quick / fast he is. The combine or pro days will tell us that. I did see him caught from behind with a lead. Just a hunch, he's not a sub 4.4 40 guy. More like 4.45-4.55. I'm not comfortable with 4.55 or slower to play corner on the outside.

Top 15? I'd learn toward yes. However his football character is very bad. If he has a rocky start as a rookie, he could implode. If the best pass rushers and Waynes are gone, Peters is a option.

I agree with this. I understand you can't give up the entire draft but you can target a guy and at least try to find a trade partner to move up.

What bothers me about the Steelers is that they have drafted exactly who they've wanted without moving up and their guys just aren't good enough.

I just read this pretty good read on him:

Marcus Peters, CB, Washington - 6'0", 198 lbs. He may have the best film of all the cover corners and he's going to look great at the Combine too. The issues are all off-field. Peters played most of his college career for the Washington Huskies, but was dismissed from the team after repeated battles with the new coaching staff. OTOH, U. of W. agreed to continue paying his scholarship at whatever school(s) he went to, which means that even the university brass knew that the problems weren't all on him. What's going on behind the scenes? Did he really try to "strangle" a coach as part of the "multiple arguments" he had with the new staff? You and I may never know, but it is the major factor that will determine how far this early-1st talent will fall.

So what is the downside to picking him? If he is good then we get a great deal at 22 if he is bad many here will like it when he chokes MT.........lmao!

Tomlin had a problem being a players type of coach who used to allow games, and such. He created a divide on the team by allowing vets a few liberties. Then when it back fired on him, he started to act like the principal you feared crossing in elementary school. This flip flop of good cob - bad cop makes his respect level drop among the players. But few players are dumb enough to call out their coach on his mistakes and those that question the coaching are the untouchables like Ben.

Some coaches can handle bad character types. Others can not. Based on Tomlin's current track record with bad character types, and sometimes tardiness to promote a more talented younger player, Peters and him could very well clash.

I think a coach like Ryan, or Belicheat could handle Peters.

We got Heath Miller at 30 10 years ago. There's always value if we draft the right player rounds 1-5, sometimes 6. Round 7 not so much.

Coach doesnt like Peters
many moons ago, Coach didnt like another secondary player whose head was too large.

I say we draft Peters.

Well the point here is we don't know if he had an issue and since Washington continued to pay his scholarship there must be more to it. A lot is made of the way players act and what they did when they were younger, they are kids and not all turn out bad. Hech we took a chance on Adams and he has turned out ok.....off the field. You never know what your gonna get and in this situation we may never know the real story but one thing i feel is if he is still there at 22 I wouldn't be mad if he was a Steeler.

Peters is like a Talib or Revis on the field. He is pretty damn good and would allow us to play more press man, which we need to do. Cortez is actually pretty big and can prob play more press man too. If Cortez rebounds, with Peters and Gay...damn, our secondary may actually be good. Shamarko will take over for Troy too, so that is even better.

I can already see the Steelers sprinting up to pick Todd Gurley in the first with 10 seconds off their clock

Hmmm, hard to read when it says........ If Cortez rebounds, with Peters and Gay. LMAO
